Default What to wear at a wedding?

I have a wedding to go to and I have no idea as to what is appropriate to wear. The only weddings I have attended in several years, I have been a bridesmaid, etc., and there was always so much going on that I never paid attention to what everyone was wearing. I'm not really a dress person so I don't have any decent dresses, but I have a few pant suits. What colors besides white are not ok? Would a black pantsuit be ok with a colorful shirt underneath or should I go with gray?

Well I will wear a nice peach or coral pink dress. If it is a spring wedding. I will proubarly wear a nice soft bule dress. If you look in the blooming dales catalog. You can see these two cute dress at the end. One is baby bule and the other is a soft gold.

Black and white are a no-no. Go with grey if you must, but spring colors would be the best options. No need to spend a lot of money on something you won't wear more than twice a year, just get something from TJ Max or Dots. You should also check how formal the wedding is going to be. I've been to "sundress" weddings and "evening gown" weddings, its always good to find out ahead of time!

It all depends on the tune of the wedding. Def find out the formality level...and ask what the brides colors are. If the bridemaids are all wearing baby blue..you dont want to show up in that color!

What time of day is it and what is the venue? A church wedding in the evening is totally different from a brunch wedding in the park. Does the invitation say anything about attire, like "black tie" or "Hollywood casual"?

You probably can't go wrong with a simple dress or pantsuit, but colors are best and absolutely do NOT wear white or black. A lot depends on the time of day and the venue.

A cocktail dress in a spring color is generally a safe bet.

....and for guys, nothing says "Kiss Me! I'm White Trash!" more than my New Spring Line consisting of an electric orange plaid jacket with lime green seersucker pants, turquoise bow tie, and matching tri-colored bowling shoes.

It's what I wear when I'm out there at the firing range trying to meet members of the opposite sex. It also works well for weddings, funerals, baptisms, bar mitzvahs, Amway presentations, housewarmings, express checkouts, Tupperware parties, and all those special occasions when we say "God! I need a good, stiff drink.....either a Scotch and Viagra or a Coke and Spray Starch!"

Coming in July, Zephyr's of Fort Worth presents our New Fall Line of Denim Lingerie!

Dark burghundy or purple long cocktail for a night wedding in satin or silk. Light blue, light pink with a cute little hat or something short cocktail for the morning - with matching sweater.

    I dunno...

I just finished watching sex and the city... so I might be closest.

Thanks everyone It's an outdoor wedding at 5pm, and it's tomorrow lol (I don't know why I procrastinate). I guess I just need to go buy something. I want to be in something that's a little comfortable since my daughter is the flower girl and I know I'll be busy getting her ready and trying to keep her focused during pictures, etc.

I don't see why people throw so much stock into the "don't wear black".

Screw that, as long as the bride hasn't specifically said, no black. Its all cool, its just a color.

White I'd try to stay away from but not as vehemently as you'd think.

Hell, my colors for my wedding are black and white, and everyone is welcome to join in.

Just find out the level of formality of the wedding and then pick up something to match that level.

    Well...on the one hand...

    http://www.weddingchannel.com/ui/bui...icle_1152.html

    I quote:
Wearing black: the long standing tradition of ladies not wearing black to a wedding has been overturned. Today, even the bridesmaids might be outfitted in black. Just make sure you don't look like you're attending a funeral. Consider accessorizing that little black dress with a brightly colored scarf or blazer.

    And on the other...

    http://books.google.com/books?id=FOo...iQiAkSuelm5WbE

    Again, quoting:
No woman should show up at a wedding at which she is neither the bride nor a mourner wearing white or black.

Personally, despite my almost pathological devotion to the rules of Miss Manners, I would probably go with the former and say black is ok.

P.S. I have no idea why I just researched that.

What's "Hollywood casual"? for us here on the east coast.

It totally depends on the bride and groom and the type of wedding they want.My wedding was eclectic to say the least..guests showed up in everything from formal wear to bikinis..and all were more than welcome!

Hm, I don't know. What we call "Hollywood casual" is a pretty big range but it's a sexier, hipper version of what my mom calls "dressy-casual." Nice jeans with a sexy little top, cute skirt with a semi-casual blouse, sandals, etc.

It really just depends on how casual the wedding is. I've been to weddings where women wore cocktail dresses and some where everybody was wearing khakis or whatever. Just find out the formality.

I went to a fall wedding a couple of years ago and a surprising number of people were wearing black... But, since this is spring, I'd go with... Well, whatever's pretty. Nothing white and nothing too revelaing.

Depending on the invite (formal or whatever), I'd go with a simple cocktail dress of some sort in a flattering, pretty color.

honestly, i hate to dismiss everyone's opinions about not wearing black to a wedding, but it is totally acceptable this day in age.. i have been to several formal, elaborate over the top weddings, as well as smaller informal ceremonies and a lot of guests have black on..

Wow. Maybe it's only Southerners who still maintain that tradition then, but I know my mama would die if I wore black to a wedding. I was always taught that was incredibly rude; wearing black to a ritual indicates mourning or disapproval. I guess nowadays a wedding is just a party, but still.

    Agreed.

This and 'elbows on the table' rules seem to have skipped this last decade.
