    Default computer smarties - help!

here lately... when i turn my bf's comp on, it shuts down, then when i restart it, it says "alert - shut down due to thermal event". so then i restart in safe mode, and system restore it. it then works... until i shut the computer down again.

i searched for help on this online, and no problem is the same as mine. the other people's say the comp just shuts down... but mine will stay on!

i think it's a virus of some sort... because i HAVE to system restore it... and even then, it doesn't always work.

    any help is greatly appreaciated.

...have you run an anti-virus and adware scan on it? And what model comp is it?

    Might try this:

Right click on My Computer and select properties.
    Click Advanced tab.
Click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Under "System Failure" uncheck "Automatically Restart".
    Click OK.

The above may stop the reboot but not solve the real prob. Talk to MAST about the Event Viewer too.

i'm running avg right now and it's found something the other virus scanner didn't detect.

it's a dell, unsure of the exact model.

You'd have to go into safe mode, run the anti-virus and then pull it out. Most trojans imbed themselves into the system controls (you may have your omputer set to restore defaults) and even if the anti-virus software finds and deletes it, since it installs itself into the system, each time you rebooted the computer, it would re-install itself. They're a pain in the ass.

I do not remember exactly how to remove the trojan by hand, if necessary...but PM Mast and I'm sure he would know.

BTW...most trojans steal passwords. I would strongly advise that you change every single password on every account you access online (after you remove the trojan permanently, of course).

A "thermal event" is a hardware issue. The CPU (brains) of the computer gets very hot when it is working. There is a device that is placed on top of the CPU called a "heat sink" (it often looks like a little fan). It's purpose is to pull the heat away from the CPU. The heat sink may not be working properly.

It also could be an accumulation of dust inside the computer. If you open the box and inside you see a build up of dust, then this may be restricting the air flow in the computer. Go to office max and buy a can of compressed air (make sure you buy a type that is made for computers). Take the computer outside, open it up, and blow out the dust with the compressed air.

A little warning for those that have never openned a computer. The electronics inside them are VERY sensitive to static electricity. I would advise that you try to avoid touching any of the components unless you are certain that you are properly grounded.

It may be easiest to take it to the local computer shop. It is a fairly easy issue to deal with and probably would not cost very much.

    Hope this helps.

OK. Do try to remove the viruses (that could be it). I would need to see the actual error that pops up (could be a phoney error). One way to verify this would be to go into the Event Viewer and look at the system log (look for errors). Any errors in the event log are legitimate Windows reported errors. If there are thermal errors in the event log, then it is a hardware issue.

If you are not sure how to do this, then just ask and I will post some instructions for you.
