You know I was in FL and in NJ all of the places are smoke free and I was wondering if it were up to you would your plce be smoke free too? It seemes so unhealthy, I mean mind you I'll have a smoke when I feel like it, after quitting for 6 mo I have no clue why I thought having one wasn't going to make me want to go back but ugh anyway it was just too much for me all the smoke in the SC's

I'm glad here in Canada they've banned smoking almost everywhere, I despise cig smoke.

They now even want to ban in in apt. buildings because smoke goes through ventilating systems.

Believe it or not I LOVE the smoking ban in Canada. I am a smoker but I HATE working in a bar full of smoke. There are still a few bars in Canada I work in that have smoking... but not many.

I hate when im on stage and the bar is full of smoke... it makes me feel gross.

It didn't seem like a big deal before but I am now a concious smoker, I know doesn't sound right but see my real mom is a smoker so was my real father and my brother so I didn't really know that the world was around coughing and getting sick, now I feel so bad for people who work indoor and have to inhale it al lthe time.

Made me think about health care, do any of you get health ins at your job?

Yeah - I don't feel as good about an apartment ban (if they don't have a place outside to smoke, like a balcony). I have no problem with public ordinances and stuff. but people do have to live somewhere. I think depriving people of housing (especially when it is (as buildings tend to be) the cheap and available housing requires a little more thought.

I know I perhaps sound a little too much like an anti-smoking Nazi, but sometimes when people smoke in neighboring apts I can smell the smoke going through the ventilation ducts.
Its very light but I can smell it.

Why should I have to put up with that???

Dn't they have special apts for that? i know that when I was trying to find an apt back a few years ago they thing would say "non smoking tenants" maybe there can be designated ones? ALso I heard there were trying to band smoking in cars in Jersey, is this true? I don't smoke in my car cause of my kids but isn't that a bit much?

Okay I dont agree with smoking inside(I wont even smoke in my own apt) but sometimes when its a really shitty fuckin day i'll open the window and smoke by the window... then im runnin around my apt with febreeze...

I think banning inside smoking is stupid. I pay $1000 a month for my damn apt.. I can smoke inside if I want. If you dont like it live in a non smoking building.

I agree with no smoking in bars n shit. But to tell someone what they can do in their own home is stupid. If you can 'faintly smell it' then light a candle if it bugs you that bad or spray an air freshener... its doing you no harm, your not breathing in the second hand smoke.

They're only banning smoking in cars that have children in them.

As far as Esco's post goes: That's the downside of apt living. We are all subject to the smells of cooking, perfume, cleaning producs etc, not just cigarette smoke.

Personally, I'd rather have a light cigarette smell than the curry I am constantly assualted with every time I step into my hallway when I get home from work.

I dont agree with smoking around kids. If you have a kid take the smoking outside and don't do it with kids in the car. I used to get killer ear infections as a kid from being around my grandparents that smoked.

Thats the problem there is no such thing as a non smoking building (that I'm aware of).

A lot of landlords are contemplating going smoke-free voluntarily:

WOW...now that's wrong on at least 50 levels!

And especially since we know what we know now about second hand smoke. Back when we were little, there wasn't the same information available.

But, there is now, and that woman was making a choice to subject her child to illness.

But curry smoke isnt dangerous, second-hand cig smoke is.

I long for the day they ban tobacco altogether, there's nothing worse then kissing a girl that just finished her Camel non-filter....YUCK!!!

I highly doubt that the small amount you're getting through the vent is going to harm you in any way.

And curry burns the shit out of my nose. It's about personal space in the end and I don't like the smell of curry, so I should not be subjected to it.

But I live in an apt building and that's the cards I'm dealt. You don't get to choose. If you don't want that, then move into an apt. in a private residence with other non-smokers. You do have that choice.

    Probably not, no.

I do think that eventually the govt will ban smoking in apt. buildings though, it seems like
    the next logical step.

The whole reason I don't smoke can be summed up as:

12hour+ car trips across America with parents that smoke, and especially a father that smokes cigars, runs the A/C at freeze your balls off levels and never opens the windows. I wanted a gas mask so bad when I was little.

Odd how I don't mind people smoking, even though for myself I never would.

Because... people have to live somewhere? To me housing is inherently different than bars. Denying people the right to live in places is kind of a big deal - a much bigger deal than denying them the right to smoke in bars. And I disagree that it is the "next logical step". I see a huge, big, fundamental difference between people's homes and public property, or businesses that cater to the public, and I'm pretty sure the government does too. I actually think, on the contrary, if it became a problem that the opposite would happen - that landlords would be prohibited from refusing to rent based on smoking.

I was only ever for a smoking ban for when it was in restaurants. Bars, apartments, etc... I was against it. Seeing smokers huddled outside in the winter always made me a bit angry.... and taking smoking out of bars? Way too weird... and with the # of smokers IN bars... I think it would be a bad thing for some bars and clubs. Maybe not all, but some. I've heard some owners/managers/staff complain after a ban was put into place.

Overall it's a tough call IMHO. Yes, non-smokers don't want to be subjected to it, but then again... smokers don't want to be subjected to not doing it. Dunno... I guess at this point I'm on the fence.

Anyone think we have another prohibition on our hands here?

Then again banning smoking made me think of one of William Gibsons books where cigarettes and such are banned, and everyone rolls their own and they by these hair curling papers that are the right size for roll your own smokes... of course they are for hair curling, but i digress.

I don't like smoking but I've never minded people that did. I know too many people in IT that smoke.

And yet I can see sometime in the future cigs will be banned in condo and apt. buildings. 20 years ago it would've been unimaginable to ban smoking in bars, and yet it happened.

Time will tell I guess, I really hope they do though, its best for smokers and non-smokers alike.

Who knows, some people may even quit
