Default bringing david hicks home cost us $500K

    What a crock of shit.

    http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=268278

WTF would make the government do this?

I'd be happy if the muthafucker never came home let alone wasting that sort of money bringing someone back into our country who might blow us all up!!!

This made me mad. Would all the people who campaigned to have him home feel safe if he boarded a plane with them? I think not.

Remember that most of the allegations against Hicks were never actually proven and that the US was unwilling to afford him a trial according to law (ie involving the application of rules of evidence and procedure, etc), which leads one to suspect that the evidence, if any existed, was rather flimsy. I'd be very surprised if he blew anything up.

Personally, I find it appalling that our national government refused to step in earlier for a citizen being held in questionable (to say the least) conditions for umpteen years without trial and, for a long time, without charge. Bringing him back, even at this late stage, was the very least they could do, given the blatant violations of US and international law involved in his detention. I would like to think that any Australian citizen would be afforded the same right if at all practicable.

By the way, the futile war in Iraq has cost us far more than 500K.

I totally agree that he was denied natural justice. I do not believe however that he is innocent and even though I agree that more than $500k has been wasted on the futile war in Iraq, I still think that it was an unnecessary expense.

I think he is an extremist and this prob only got worse during his imprisonment. I think he is a danger to Australians and it is a shame that a more solid case could not be made out against him.

I believe very much in innocent until proven guilty. I think that, given the resources of the US, if there had been a case to make out they would have done so. They had over five years and abundant technology and personnel to gather evidence, evidently did not manage to do so, and in the end settled for a plea deal on the least serious charge. They were not even willing to test what evidence they did have according to law. Given those circumstances, David Hicks is entitled not to be treated as guilty of offences which were never proven against him.

I know all that due to my legal education and it doesn't stop me from having these views!! If it was any other sort of "crime" I could be objective and it really bothers me that I cannot be objective about this, really really bothers me.
I think we have been brainwashed by all this anti-terror shit and I am a victim coz I absolutely would not board a plane or even a train that he was on!

I tend to think that the war against terrorism has been somewhat overhyped as a means of eroding civil rights and keeping current governments in power. I don't submit that there's no terrorist threat- clearly there is- but I can't accept that it looms anywhere near as large as the Bush government tends to make out, given that the number of actual attacks against the West has in fact been relatively small.

Yeh I think there is definately truth to that theory.
They just said on the news what movies David Hicks has been viewing?? Haha that's really newsworthy.

I know but I did say that I agree that he has been denied natural justice - there is no question about that. But clearly he was over there training with extremists for a reason and I definately would not feel safe around him.
Would I defend him? That depends on me getting to know more about the case. If I become a barrister then the cab rank principle applies and I would have to take him on as a client if he requested me. I would hope I could be objective in that case.

But as a private citizen speaking from my own safety point of view, do I want him here? Absolutely not.

I wouldn't share a plane with any policitian. They are much worse than David Hicks! I don't trust them as far as I can throw them.............and I can't throw them far.

As for the "war on terrorism"... ah... wouldn't we have been 'hit' by now if someone was going to do something? They have had AMPLE enough time and opportunities if anyone was going to do it (imo).

I always joke that once they hit Australian shores and become part of our culture that they become just as lazy as the rest of us! Hard work, what's that? When's our next public holiday so we don't have to work? LOL!

I still would sit on a plane with David Hicks on it.

Oh btw, can someone please tell him to bomb Surfers Paradise during Schoolies? Please

Ok, excuse me, I just have a wacky sense of humour about all this .... I'm not as paranoid as the rest of the world.
