Default Work and Gender: An Ethnography of a Midwest Stripclub

Interesting piece out of Omaha - thought some of you might find it of interest.

Work and Gender: An Ethnography of a Midwest Stripclub

It must be understood that this paper has been modified for personal reasons upon requests that it be publicly distributed. All names have been changed to acronyms and several pages of potentially incriminating information have been removed. This is not a testimony of my shame or the like, but rather a protection measure against a society that has historically and currently devalued (socially and legally) women’s work. Though untrue for many women in the industry, I hold my title as “sex worker” to be of great pride. Women in the industry should never feel ashamed of themselves or their jobs, as the real culprit and the true tragedy is the fact that these women, like many laborers, are without healthcare, regulation, respect, childcare, etc. This paper and this research was never intended to be a critique of “others,” but rather an account of myself and my identity, of which I am so proud.

Although I thought the "article" was lacking, I do agree with this: "The social stigmatization associated with women in the industry is the true oppressor..."

Forgive me for saying this, but the author of that piece seriously needs to get laid.

Just in case anyone is wondering, the club mentioned in this article is a fairly low mileage bikini club. No to diminish that as any less than stripping than at a topless or nude club, but I wonder what kind of ten dollar words we would be reading here if the author went to work in a grittier place where she had to expose part of herself, and grind on some of the "main participants" crotches. If she wants to add some dimension to her "research project" there's just such a place across the river in Iowa.

And I have to go with Mia here, while stripping isn't as easy as it seems, its not so complicated that it needs to be dissected like this. Halfway through that article I felt an urge to go do something reptilian before I kill myself.

And I wonder why KETV has that up on their website. Its not like its news.

But hey, give her credit for walking a mile in your shoes...literally. At least she didn't come to SW asking you all to participate in a survey!

But beware! Real ethnographers are known to follow up with additional instruments to triangulate their findings.

Although this piece is in scientific jargon, it's unfortunately not scientific at all. Ethnographic research isn't that well respected in the scientific community as valid and reliable research. Her story, like ours, will continue to be sidelined, discredited, and misconstrued.

Ethnographic research is not objective, it cannot be replicated like quantitative research, and is purely an interpretive endeavor. Her motivation to tell this story is quite questionable and the way in which she told it lacked fervor. She was riding the line, trying to play it safe, and failed to qualitatively make sense of our world, one of which I doubt she was truly apart.

If you're talking about strippers, talk about strippers don't say prostitutes and sex workers in the same sentence and expect to get a good response. She's marginalizing our experiences and her claims were out of focus. I doubt that her research was all that reflexive and her insight as an outsider is not representative of the club world and is narrowminded at best.

Nice attempt at something professional, but it failed to make the grade.

that's the author, I presume . . . way to go, Huskers! To her credit, she took the job rather than coming here and bothering us, which is more than we can say about most college kids who decide to write a soc paper on stripping.

I may be wrong, but I think May is "sweeps month" in the TV business, isn't it?
