Default How to DJ for a strip club?

    Hi there by the way

So I'm in the Los Angeles area and I want to DJ at a decent/fun strip club.

I have a lot of music and some experience playing out, but not a lot. I'm all digital w/ Serato + Real Vinyl. I think a lot of music I have would be crazy played for the right girl and atmosphere.

How do I get into it? I've only been to a strip club a couple times (I'm 24) and it's cool and all but I'd prefer spinning the music - no offense sexy ladies

Is it just about getting to know the manager there? I don't want to come off as a creep just trying to get laid. What sort of equipment is available? Visual stuff? Who typically handles all of this?

I'm assuming these gigs pay well (decent?)?

By the way, I've been really diggin a lot of new wave French electro - I'll post some YouTube videos for any of you interested... Shit is kinda wild so if you're not open to it you might not like it - It's expected.

Other stuff is just plain sexy-ish.

BTW, I'm sorry if I'm posting in the wrong section of the forum

    - (Justice - D.A.N.C.E.)
    - (Dj Mehidi - DJ Mehdi / T. Bangalter Edit) -( Cut Copy - Future) ... Sidenote: Hearts on Fire is a ridiculous track. Can't find a video to it though.

Any current/classic hiphop/rnb would be something I would probably have.

My rock knowledge is weak... But is rock played in heavy rotation in strip clubs? I have the basics, guns n roses, AC DC, etc. - but that would be something I would have to explore more.

Any help on any of the things I've posted/asked would be great.

    Thanks!

Umm stripclub DJs get paid fuck all.. they rely on tips.. if the girls have a shit night, then you have a shit night. Also you need to be able to promote the girls and be able to get customers excited for even the ugliest girl.

Also rock is played more then any other type of music in a club... at least any club i've ever worked in(i've worked in probably 50 some odd clubs now across Canada and parts of the US)

You need to have a loud clear voice and be able to sound good on a mic.

You need a laid back personality and need to be able to get along with the girls.

Honestly from what you say I think you would be a better night club DJ.

I can't be bothered to watch those links because honestly I have no interest.

Check 'Music Mix' to find out more about DJing.

Oh to get hired... open your eyes and read the paper and oh.. I dunno call clubs?

Here I thought it was just about the music/visuals... I didn't know the DJ also MC'd the night.

    That might change things, lol.

Off the bat I would be a better nighclub DJ, considering how much of my focus is on the actual music and not typically being an MC. And my experience.

I think my lack of experience is shining through... Are there even mixes, or is it basically just a matter of picking/choosing music and playing back-to-back tracks?

I'll check out the music section.

    Thanks.

Have you never been in a strip club?

Its basically picking music that suits a girl. Say I started to work your club... I would come in and tell you I like dancing to Linkin Park, Limp Bizket, Disturbed, Fallout Boy, Hinder and some Pussycat Dolls along with ACDC, Motley Cru and Metallica.

So from that list you would need to be able to figure out what music to play me each set... and it has to be different music every show.

You also need to be able to schedule a stage rotation, pick a rotation thats going to benifit the club... be able to figure out lighting for each girl... and follow detailed instruction for each and every girl.

There is no mixing(unless your at a Showbar thats about partying)... half the time the music is the least of your priority.

The DJ's in my club make minimin wage plus tips. This is in the Los Angeles area. The tips can range from 40 bucks to hundreds on the busier nights. A dj friend told me the most he had ever made on a Friday night was $600. I asked him how to get hired cause a friend was interested. He said it was a matter of being at the right place at the right time as well as sounding good on the mic and having the right personality to get the crowd going and to spend money.

    Brilliant!

OTOH, based on my years of experience in the customer seating, I'd say the #1 talent a strip club DJ must possess is the ability to mumble loudly but incoherently into the mic, especially when announcing the dancer's name.

Djoser, you need to come up our way and teach that course of yours to our local DJs!

Oh my goodness. Djing in a strip club is probably only 10% about the music.
As cally said, You need to make a stage rotation that suits the club and the girls. You need to watch the stage liek a hawk. Did the girl show up for her stage? If not, find a replacement, right now. Sometimes, the next girl don't show, or the next, or the next. You have to scramble to get a girl on stage.
Lighting. Some girls are particular about their lights. You have to make sure the lighting is right for the girl.
You have to make sure the music is right for the girl. Most girls will tell you exactly what to play. Write it down, or remember it, cause if you play the wrong shit, she won't tip you as good. No matter how many times I tell my dj I'm easy, play anything, but no tecnho, he plays techno for me. His tips go way down.
Speaking of tips. Thats where you make yoru money. If you suck, you won't get tipped good. This means keeping up with the stage rotation( no girl wants stuck on stage 10 songs)
Playing the right music, keeping the right lights, and promoting for the girl, while encouraging stage tips.
Each and every girl on stage, you need to announce, and talk up. Check out this beautiful lady guys, she is amazing!
No guys tipping? It's YOUR job to encourage them to go to the stage and tip.

Your talking all night long. Being a strip club dj requires a lot of attention. You have to be focused, but also friendly, not a prick, and accomodating. You have to be on the ball, ready for last minute changes. Girl on stage next just got sent off to VIP? find a new girl for stage, now! Your rotation you made up at the beginging of the night will be constantly changing and evolving. Girls comming in to work, girls going home, girls going to VIP, girls who just didn't show up for stage. You have to alwyas be ready to make changes and keep things going.

You also need to be able to keep the tone of the club going. Club seems in a slump? A little boring, not enough energy? YOU have to fix that, by playing the right music to bring up the crowd, and by talking to the crowd, and getting them amped up. Whcih means you need energy.

You also need to know all genre's of music, just not what you like to listen to, because every dancer has her own preferences.

If you just wanna play music all night, try a night club instead. That would also suit your knowledge of music better, since night clubs only play, well...club music.

Well let me preface this post by saying thanks to you all who replied. I appreciate it.

I never knew the DJ at a strip club did so much... Figures, I love spinning at nightclubs - I thought the atmosphere of a strip club would lend to my style. I guess not...

I guess I'll just post every once in a while and/or post my music recommendations in this section of the forum.

    Thanks again.

Not only do you need to get the customers excited, you need to keep the girls and the individual tastes of those girls in mind too. Escpecially since you will be relying on the dancers to pay you.
