how long ago did you get pierced?
most facial piercings are pretty happy after about a month, but you should check with your piercer first - if you switch out the jewelry before it's sufficiently healed, you'll irritate your piercing, potentially causing it to swell, which is really uncomfortable with the shorter bar on regular jewelry (the starter ones are made longer to allow for a little bit of swelling)...
if you haven't bought the little stud yet, you can ask them to take a look at your piercing when you go in and see what the professionals think...possibly even have them change it for you (i've always had trouble getting the starter bars undone on my own since they screw them on super tight)...if you're going to change it before the suggested time, you can also take some ibuprofen or another over the counter anti inflammatory 20-30 minutes before you do it to minimize any swelling

I just got in done on Sunday, my lip is still swollen. hehe. Thanks!

Go back to the shop (when the swelling has gone down), and ask them to change the jewelry 2-weeks to a month is usually the standard (once the swelling goes down it can get caught on teeth, you can bite it, etc.

So I should just see when the swelling goes down, right? I got the Sea Salt spray stuff and have been cleaning in about 5 times a day. I do love it, I just can't wait until it's tiny and cute like my nose ring. I do like my bigger (swollen) top lip LOL

Okay that's the second time I typed "in" instead of "it" I'm a dork..

youre cleaning it 5 times a day? way way way too much. at the most clean it twice a day. more than that and your messing with your body's ability to heal on its own.
also wait at least a month before you shorten your bar. you can have the top stud switched out for a smaller one but dont shorten your bar until all the swelling has gone down. usually the swelling will vary from week to week over that first month of healing... week 3 might have less swelling than week 5 for example depending on if you irritated the piercing in any way. any decent piercer would refuse to downsize your bar until youve waited at least a month anyway.... if its just the size of the ball thats bothering you that should be no problem to switch without affecting the healing of your piercing

Oooh, I totally want new piercings. Damn. Monroes are hot.I'd keep it in until your piercer is ok with changing it. Better to deal with it for 2 months, then have problems with it forever.
I believe you Dottie and you have my support

I want a Monroe SO bad, but I totally think it would throw off my look. I'm jealous!! Don't clean it too much and go to the piercer when you wanna change it!

I would like to get one too. I haven't had a new piercing in a few years..I think it's time to get something new done.

Really 5 times is too much? The aftercare instructions I was given said clean 3-6x a day. I've already gone through the whole bottle, maybe that's why they want you to clean it so often. Oh well, I agree I'd rather have it big and gaudy for two months then issues forever. I have to admit I feel dumb. I've wanted it for a long time, and I'm going to Greece on Thursday and I wanted to have it before I left, now I wish I had waited until after, it's too big! Hehe

^^ is that the H2Ocean??
I use that stuff as a piercing cleaning suppliment. You're cleaning it waaaaaaaaay too much, no way should you have gone through a whole bottle already girl!
Instead, clean it in the morning and at night with an anti-microbial soap, and do a warm salt soak for 15 minutes everyday. The sea salt soak will help your body heal itself.
Just spray the H2Ocean or whatever it is your using every now and then when you feel like it's dirty or needs a little extra to keep it from getting infected.
Cleaning it too much is just as bad as not cleaning it at all.
Yeah H2Ocean is the spray. Thanks for all the info!

What I've always told people (dunno if you know or not but I worked at a tattoo/piercing shop for like 3 years) is clean it after every meal and smoke. Other than that clean it when you wake up and go to bed. DO NOT play with it - bad for your teeth bad for the piercing!! Just don't do it!! The mouth is the dirtiest part of the body and you really can't over clean it unless you are using a mouthwash with alcohol in it. Sea salt rinses will not hurt it.
Wait at least a month to change it out. When you do change it out I would suggest going to the shop you got it done at and have them do it as it might be difficult for you to do it yourself and you might hurt yourself/irritate the new hole.
Remember what looks healed and what is healed are two different things. It will heal from the outside in.
And be careful putting a new screw or anything on the outside that is really small, I would hate for you to wake up one morning with an embedded piece of jewelry (I have seen it WAY too often!!)
ok that's my $0.02
Oh yeah!! If you're going to drink only drink straight alcohol!! If you drink beer or champagne it can cause a yeast infection in your mouth, and that's not cool.
I love those!
Pics?
I attached two pics, I hope I did it right!

By the way, haven't switched out the jewelry. I'll probably go this week sometime.

Hey, it looks good on ya! My friend has a Monroe as well, and she just keeps a small stud in there. It really looks good when you're into the glam/ pinup look like she is.

I like the super small jewelry... like 1.5mm stones... Something like this only a little smaller...

(I also really like Medusas with a labret. Think they look wicked good together)
