    Default Buying Health insurance- help?!

My insurance is due to run out at the end of June (I've been on my parents, but that expires when I turn 24). I have to choose a health insurance (to pay for myself) and I have no idea where to go or what to do. Can anyone reccomend the health insurance they have?

Oh, and also, my father and I have been arguing about something. He says that if I put "independant contractor" on the form (where it aks for employment) I'll stand a higher chance of being rejected. I don't think that makes sense, I mean, as long as I'm paying I don't think they'd care, and isn't that who USUALLY buys their own health insurance anyway?

Oh, and my town is not the greatest for dancers, so the very most I can afford is $200 and $100-$150 would make my life a lot easier.

Anyway, any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm not on any regular meds and I never have health problems, though. So, I think I'm going to get some kind of coverage for emergencies only (like, if I get in a car accident or something) and Planned Parenthood for birthcontrol.

I believe that a lot of self-employed people use Kaiser??

Thanks Em. I checked out the links and the info was usefull, but I'm still hoping for some more specific reccomendations. Regency Blue Cross, anyone? I've heard some good buzz about them, but nothing specific.

I found, at least in Texas, United had the cheapest- at about 106 a month for a 23 yr old full time student. Scott and White wanted 190.

I have had no problems with my John Alden/assurant health high deductable plan. These plans are good to protect you against big expenses, but you'll still have some out of pocket expenses (you'll wan to do this with a health savings account).

Private Contractor status shouldn't effect anything - no different than "self employed."

And the company is well they insure a lot of dancers in Las Vegas..
So you won't have to worry about being discriminated because you are a dancer.

Great company, I broker some of their products. They take good care of their customers and their agents. Beware that smoker rates are about 30% higher, but that's for pretty much any insurance company.

Make sure you get coverage before 63 days have passed. So if your coverage ends June 30, start your new policy right away if possible, and no later than 63 days after that.

If you do, you could be subject to medical underwriting since it is an individual policy.

I don't have any specific companies but this is really important.

If you don't get an individual policy (subject to underwriting) you'll pay a shitload more for a "group of one" policy. At least that is my experience in Louisiana and Florida. I had $129/month for individual policy in FL and come to LA. They transfered it to guaranteed issue at $521/month. Well, I didn't get it but that's what they watned. Individual underwriting is much cheaper but you have to be able to pass underwriting, i.e., no preexisiting conditions.

You can have pre-existing conditions. They will most likely be exluded for some time or forever. It depends on the condition as well. High-risk individuals should look into "risk pool" insurance offered by many states.
