    Default Homeless person...

is trying to break into one of the abandoned houses in front of my house. this guy is really sketchy, he's wobbling all over, he has a bucket w/ a stick and a bag.

he's checked the garage door twice already, knocked/kicked the front door. it's a given that no one lives there because there's newspaper piled up. should i call the police?

OH God yes, call now before he breaks something.

Make sure you give your name because depending on how it turns out, the cops might need to talk to you. Say, didn't you want to become a cop? A chance to learn about handling vagrants.

Call...you definitely don't want him coming to your house sometime!

I say leave him alone. He's just a bum looking for a place to sleep and the house is abandoned. He hasn't shown any signs that he might be dangerous to you or anybody else. If he does, THEN call the police.

I wouldnt worry about it - hes obviously looking for an abandoned house not an occupied one so whats the problem? Let him have a roof over his head for a while.

What if it was YOUR abandoned house?

Call the cops. If he wants a place to sleep, go find a shelter. If you don't call the cops now, next thing you know, you'll wake up and some bum will be on your front patio.

If it was MY abandoned house I wouldn't give a damn. I abandoned it! At least someone is using it.

And I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.

    Someone owns that house.

Even if they don't give a shit about it, I sure as hell wouldn't look the other way at something like this. Maybe this guy is harmless, but if he's willing to break into THAT house, who's to say he's not willing to break into ANY house?

If she was my girlfriend, I'd be on my way over right now to make sure she's ok, and than I'D call the cops.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for "homeless" people. 90% of the time, they're bums.

Really, trul homeless people, yeah, they deserve sympathy. Guys who are swerving around, breaking into houses don't probably fall into the sympathetic category.

He'd be better off in custody. Three hots and a cot, a shower....(The OP is in the South SF Bay, which is more than able to provide for a man in this situation.)

If you let him be he'll just be stuck in an abandoned house with no food and nowhere to go to the bathroom.

If I abandoned a house Id hope that someone could use it, whats the point of it sitting empty when people are sleeping on the streets?
Ive taken in lots of homeless people over the years anyway.
And maxine, homeless people do manage to eat you know

I would let him be. I know alot of people dont have sympathy for bums and think - just get a job like the rest of us - but it's hard to understand until you've been there. Not that I have, but I try to think about them as human beings, as opposed to a nuisance that doesn't deserve to be looked in the eye. Most homeless people have either a severe mental handicap or a problem with addiction that led them to become that way, and once you're there, how are you going to get out if no ones willing to lend a hand. Shelters are often too packed to take people in. If I abandoned a house I wouldn't worry about a homeless person sleeping there. If he or she respected my abandoned house, and my abandoned house's neighbors then I wouldn't mind.

Unless the guy is trying to break into an occupied house or one that you know is usually occupied (but the residents are away for whatever reason) then ... let him be.

When I was homeless, I'd find myself crashing in abandoned places now and then. Never broke anything, never stole anything (not that there was ever much left but...) but a warm(ish) place to stay rocked socks.

I didnt read all the other responses.... but I would just leave it be. Unless he is trying to break into a place that someone lives in... who is he hurting? I mean he's homeless. If you feel like he needs to be helped find out what the local homeless shelters are called and how they can be reached. same with soup kitchens. Calling the cops isn't going to help this guy. imo.

I would venture to say that is just silly.on top of being homeless this man does not need a record. It is hard enough to get your life back together, getting a job with a record will fuck you and will do so for years. It is really easy to get foot (from soup kitchen or otherwise... dumpster diving? I have def gotten many a meal from a dumpster. It isnt dirty or gross. it is the food that has been discarded... day old bread - it's still good!! but i dont need to go into that, and there are public bathrooms everywhere, and if there are not, there are pleanty of grassy or wooded areas... we and our domesticated animals are the only ones who dont go in natural surroundings...

If it was my abandoned house I would leave the backdoor open and check on it a couple times a month. If I had the money to leave a house abandoned then i would probably just let it be a flop house for anyone who needed it. I would try and monitor drug use and try and get those with a problem help. Just because someone is homeless does not in any way mean they will do anything to anyone! I am offended your this statement, and obvious distain for the homeless. I have known many homeless people and none of them have ever tried to break into a house that anyone lived in or set foot on their property. Many people that are homless are totally humiliated and ashamed and are too proud to go seek help - so they sleep on the street, the break into abandoned buildings. I know I have spent the night in an abandoned building. I never hurt anyone or did any damage to the property. Anyway as i was saying it is very hard for the homeless in this country, especially men because they are not living up to their precieved role in this (American) society where men are strong, and dont need help and can do things on their own and make money is very discouraging, disheartening, and in some cases enough to do very serious psychological damage. It is also difficult for many homeless people to feel human, as many many people wont give them the time of day, or will activly look down on them (I have seen a homeless woman who was sleeping doused in gasoline and set on fire - all because she was a homeless person and therefore not worth anything). What would you do if you're entire world came apart and you lost everything and were out on the street. No one would help you and no one cared. Take a hot second and just try to put yurself in his shoes.

    so what ended up happening?

fwiw, i called the cops on a homeless crackhead breaking OUT of a neighbor's abandoned house, they were fixing it up and had the windows boarded up and i heard this noise, shined a flashlight on him and saw him climbing out of the window. didnt know what he'd done in there, but i figured jail is better than the streets in winter.

    Love it!

s-: I think that if homeless people think that jail would be the easier option they are quite capable of getting themselves arrested.

Me too. You know those office buildings where you can get into the hallway at night but not any of the offices? I used to sleep in those.

Yeah! We had two in my home town, which rocked since it had no shelters. When I was homeless there, it was those hallways, some un-rented apartments that had unlocked windows, and a few abandoned houses. When I was homeless in NYC, it was usually Grand Central. Damn them for fancifying that place AFTER I lived there!

I know people who have gotten arrested on minor offenses so they would have a place to sleep & food (in jail.) That's one lucky homeless man, to be in the San Francisco Bay area...he has access to more aid programs than the average person (no drug problem, not pregnant, not "crazy" or sick=no aid.)
It seems harsh to call the cops, but seriously, it's not a good idea to let a house on your street become a squatter's house, then a crackhouse. I've lived across the street from whole groups of crackheads...Never a dull or clean-smelling moment!
If that bum was a dog or cat, most of you would feed it or adopt it. But it's a grown man.....You don't want to get involved...You don't want to feel liable for doing anything. Which is why we'll always have a homeless problem.

I have been in his shoes...I slept in my car because I didn't want to be near my family and I've done plenty of things I wasn't proud of to get by. I don't have a DISDAIN for the homeless as much as a desire for them to look for ways to get out of that present situation- I know by and large they don't like shelters because other homeless people mess with them, but isn't it better than getting doused with gasoline & set on fire because they're sleeping where some random sociopathic asshole can try to kill them for kicks?

BTW, the average San Franciscan/Northern California native has my attitude because there's more than enough people out on the street who don't try to get out of that situation & some of them get aggressive and unpleasant when they don't get a handout. Willie Brown (former SF mayor) suggested painting the homeless yellow and using them as speed bumps..He wasn't serious & I thought it was an awful thing to say, but that's the attitude.

I do realize what I'm saying sounds heartless but it's just as heartless to not do a damn thing.....& No they're not all on drugs but the majority of time there is some problem that can be eliminated, oftentimes the problem that put them on the street.

There are three types of homeless people...

1-The truly homeless...those who have hit a down turn in life and simply do not have a place to live even though they are trying
    2-The mentally ill
    3-Bums

Group 1, the smallest group as a percentage of the homeless, deserves sympathy and a simple hand up. I am all for helping this group out. If I saw a mother with two kids climbing out of a car in the morning after obviously sleeping there all night long, I'd more than likely give them some money. Ditto a homeless guy missing his legs or limbs, etc.

Group 2 is tough...many of them simply do not/will not take medications they are given. However, some are just mentally ill...for the most part, group 2 has my sympathy, however, I still wouldn't want a mentally ill person breaking into ANY building near where I live, especially one that I own, even if I have abandoned it.

Group 3 deserves very little if any sympathy and I am willing to bet the person breaking into this abandoned house falls into this category.

Overall, I don't really believe we have a serious homeless problem in this country. We've always had bums, they've just been given the nicer name of "homeless" now. For the truly homeless, there are a ton of places to turn to get help, but most bums use them as a way to keep from working.

I know this sounds mean, but the older I get, the more I realize that the idealism I had about such things tends to hit reality. That reality hit me when I offered to pay a "homeless" guy to come help me do some work on a property I owned about 9-10 years ago.

I had seen this guy near the house I owned in South Tampa a lot, always holding up a sign that said "will work for food." So one day, I needed some help hauling a shitload of carpet and old plaster and crap out of a house I was renovating. I drove over to where this guy was, and offered him 5 bucks an hour plus lunch if he'd come over and help me. This guy was probably about 30-35, healthy, etc. and told me (he said it nicely, at least, although almost in a bragging fashion) that he could make 5 bucks within the next 10-20 minutes just standing there, and thanks but no thanks.

I know this is just one guy, but that's my experience.

And so, no, I don't advocate turning a blind eye to a crime just because someone might need a place to sleep. What if he was stealing food? I mean, we shouldn't call the cops on him because he's hungry?
