    Default Stupid Knees!!

Well I've been dancing only a month, which is why I bring this question to those more experienced than me. I did a search for my question, but didn't find quite what I was looking for. So...

Like I said, I'm new, and I dance only on the weekends (reg 9-5 during the week). Every day that I dance, after about 5 hours, my knees begin to swell up, at the top above the kneecap, and I experience extreme pain (above the kneecap, inside the leg not surface pain) when bending my legs. I stay mostly off my knees during my stage shows because it just hurts too much to put pressure on them. I can barely walk down stairs after my shift, and the pain lingers into the week even with NSAIDS and ice.

I know about sore knees caused by mad floorwork, but what about joint or tendon or bursitis pain or whatever this is caused by just squatting, bending the knees, etc? I did not have bad knees before I started dancing, so it's kind of worrying me that I should be experiencing this degree of discomfort already. Is this normal or should I be worried? thanks.

You should get this checked out by a pro. As first aid, I know some dancers with bad knees tend to wear thigh-hi boots and if necessary knee support/pads under them, but you should really know what causes this before just wrapping them up and hoping for the best...

Some level of discomfort is expected, your right. Like me, I already had bad knees before I started so I know why floorwork hurts like hell. Honestly though, if you've never really experienced this before I would be a bit concerned. Try soaking in a hot bath after work, that usually helps me (as simple as it sounds). With the pain lingering that long I would suggest that you see a doctor, granted its only my opinion and I know it can't be what you wanted to hear, but I would hate to see it get worse. If it is an issue then a doctor can likely diagnose it and give you medication to keep the inflammation and pain down as well as stop it before it gets worse. Good luck!

My knees have hurt before but never like what you're describing. You might find an answer to your question on a health forum or call a doctor.
If you think school is hard, try being stupid.

I had similar problems when I started dancing. My knees got really hot and inflamed.

You may need to practice better alignment and strengthen/stretch the muscles (quads, hammies) that support your knee. Usually the inner thigh muscles are weak and the outer thigh muscles are tight. Also calf and ankle probably need to be strengthened. If your muscles are not strong enough to handle all this new activity, it concentrates stress in your joints.

Don't let your knees extend over your toes if you can; try squatting less until you've practices squats at home with proper alignment; and tense up your butt muscles to lift you up when you are going up and down. If you tense your butt muscles while you are moving, say doing lapdance, or when you are getting down onto the floor this will make you sweat the first couple days. then you knwo you are doing it right.

When the swelling has gone down, practice moving. You will probably be able to find a way to move that doesn't hurt. Then try to remember to move like this at work. If you wear stilettos, try switching to chunky or cone heels. I would see a dr. for a diagnosis and also find a good yoga teacher. Personally, the yoga teacher helped me the most.

also... icy hot rules for getting down swelling quickly.

I have never had this problem as severely as you describe. I have had a conversation with my Doc about perserving my knees and joints. He said to really work your quads and glycosamine supplements have made a huge difference. Also, when I do floor work, I never ever put my knees directly on the floor.

    Hope this helps.

    Sigh.

Well I found out today it is quadriceps tendinitis, ie, I worked my muscles too hard, too fast, and the strain inflamed the tendons in my knees. I have to stop doing the repetitive motions to avoid making it worse for at least a month.

No stripping for me for a while. I've only been at it a month, but this will give me time to learn to move correctly and hopefully avoid making this any worse.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I'm off to save my knees!
