    Default my beautiful puppy...

has spent three days vomiting, or having diarrhea continually.

First day, i thought he ate something. DIdn't notice the second day because i had to work dayshifts, adn i didn't notice he vomited in his kennel. third day i also had to work in the day and they wouldn't let me cancel be because i was the ONLY dancer on the schedule-the other girl who was supposed to come in didn't. grargh. So today he's been continually doing it and now i FINALLY have time to take him to the doggy ER... my poor boy!

This, on TOP of my boyfriend being out of town, working FOUR DAYS this week and only ONCE making SLIGHTLY more than minimum wage, the rest of the times, not EVEN....

I am in a right fine mood!

My apartment smells like doggy excrement, as do my arms, and i just got done putting TWO very full loads in the washers, of bile soaked clothing.

    YUCK!!!!!!

Side note, between the bad money, and the scheduling NOT respecting my physical health(i need a day in between shifts and can't work doubles), I'm definately going to be auditioning at other clubs again. Maybe i'll keep doing a shift or so here, until things pick up at the club(see my other posts about it) but right now i NEEEED to know i'll have my rent, and the vet bill covered. dammit.

OK so wait for laundry to be done, and then go to the ER with my sick pooch! PERFECT for my day off!

    Yeah...the laundry can wait.
For real, get your dog to the vet. Time could be important, and it's already been 3 days!

OMg, if one of my cats was continuously having vomit and diarrhea, I would not be waiting for laundry!

I'm sorry your puppy is sick....I agree with the above posters...take him to the vet to make sure that he's okay.

It doesn't take long for a baby animal to die of dehydration resulting from diarrhea and vomiting. Get him to the vet.

    Been to the vet.

Blood and fecal tests came back normal. So he's on medication for the vomiting, and a bland diet. But basically, a 500$ bill to be told there's nothing SERIOUSLY wrong with him.

I'm glad, relieved as all hell, but at teh same time...I haven't even made minimum wage at work for an ENTIRE week of work, i need to find a better club to be sure I can pay rent AND the vet bill...

Now i'm certian though-i'm never having kids. I'd lose my mind having to take care of anything like this relatively long term. Already i feel stinky and shitty, and REALLY pms-y.

Still, SOOOOOOOOOOo relieved to know that it wasn't as bad as it looked... Just gotta pay close attention to the bugger, adn give him his medications, and if he throws up more, brace myself for the vet's hospitalization bill. Please hope it doesnt come to that! He was already hospitalized for pneumonia a few months back!

(oh, and here he is, he's a photogenic little guy)

One things for sure though-until he gets control of the diarrhea, he's staying kenneled! I've had enough cleaning, adn the little fucker just shitted while he was sitting on my lap! EWWWWWWW EWWW! (mild OCD and germophobia)

    awww.Poor thing.
I'm sorry, but IMO, kenneling him is like punishing him. He is sick. JHe needs love and attention, not locked in a crate. He don't understand that you just don't want him to poop everywhere, he just thinks he got in trouble, and won't understand.

Maybe I'm just to soft when it comes to my cats, but when I rescued a 2 week old kitten once, I dint want to leave her on the floor cause she needed love, but if I put her in bed with me, she would poop in bed.
She was soo tiny, that I made a litter bix out of a small shallow tupperwear container, and I put that in bed with me to. I made sue to just sleep on one side so I didnt knock it over.
Maybe I'm to soft when it comes to animals.
My cat IS very sick right now. She has sores and ulcers in her mouth that causes her to drool very bad and bleed all the time from her mouth. As a result, there is bloody drool all over everything. I would never dream of kciking her out of bed thp. She doesn't feel good, and like a little kid, she needs comfort. I just wash the sheets a lot. And everythign else in my house she likes to lay on.

And I am truly disturbed that you not only waited 3 days, but thought to do the laundry first, if you say you dont have kids, and he is your kid...would you do that if it WAS a sick child? Hell no! You'd take your sick kid straight to the doctor.
Your puppy could have died, been very ill, gotten to dehydrated.....You got lucky that it wasn't serious.

I'm sorry if it sounds like Im bashing you, I'm not trying to, but I'm very overprotective and sensitive whe it comes to animal care, it this disturbs me.

I'm overprotective about animals as well, but I didn't "wait three days." I saw him throw up ONCE, and thought it was something he ate, as small dogs are prone to do. It wasn't until today that I found his hiding spot in the kennel where he'd been doing it, and realized that it hadn't gotten better.

And it wasn't that I thought to do the laundry, it was that i was getting ready to do the laundry, and i noticed when I removed his doggy blanket from the kennel that there was vomit in it, and when I actually brought the load down to the
laundry room and was in the middle of doing laundry, that he started vomiting on my feet. This illness has been SPASTIC... for hours he's fine, and then all of a sudden POOF shit and puke everywhere. Him appearing normal for so long, as well as the habit of small dogs to eat and vomit things pretty regularly was what made me not-so-worried in the day in between.

I know you're soft on animals, but I AM a bit offended. This dog IS my baby, for all purposes. I AM a huge animal lover as well... volunteered at the human society for years, and worked REALLY hard to be in a position of having the dog of my own.

And I'm hurt at the idea of HAVING to justify my actions in this.

Its already a miserable situation... maybe this could be tolerable with some doggy diapers, but I've never seen such a product. Unfortunately, its not a litter box that he's already trained to use, and is a comparatively small accomodation.

Blood I can stand, mostly, shit and vomit are strains.

Are you saying you really would take your baby to the doctor EVERY time his snot was a LITTLE off color or his shit a slightly different consistancy? Because thats what this situation is equivalent to. I've lived with small dogs all my life. they have sensitive stomachs, sometimes even a new brand of treat makes them throw up, or the grass they played in when you took them out to go potty. You can't worry if they throw up ONCE. Its when its longer term that you do, and thats why I DID worry today. The only thing you can do is use your common sense.

But I'm really done with this. I started this thread to vent about the gross feeling of it, NOT to be called an animal abuser and bad person.

i have to agree with K. putting him in a crate makes him feel like he's done something wrong. you dont want him to get all neurotic since you've crated him for something he cannot control. im sure it's frustrating, so, keep him in a room with newspaper down or something, and keep him company in there. that way you dont have to deal with the mess but also dont punish him.

i dont think anyone is calling you an animal abuser, but shitting without control and vomiting are signs of unhealthy behavior, so somethin gis wrong. i have two small dogs too and yes the tummies are a wee bit more sensitive but not that much so. deep breath dear. just dont punish him in the crate and imo we are all good.

    Love it!

Like I said, I apologize. But I went off what you said which was
has spent three days vomiting, or having diarrhea continually.
    That was very much worrysome.
    Now you say this
You can't worry if they throw up ONCE.
Your right, throw up once I wouldnt worry, and NO I wouldn't take my baby to the dr. If their shit changed color a little, but you said vomit and diarrhea continually for 3 days.

So today he's been continually doing it and now i FINALLY have time to take him to the doggy ER
OK so wait for laundry to be done, and then go to the ER with my sick pooch! PERFECT for my day off!
I was just going off what YOU said, and it did not sound as if you were very concerned.
I was worried for your pet, the animal you love so much. I was concerned for his health and safety.

I'm sorry if I offended you, but you know, I'd rather speak up and be wrong, than stay quiet and allow abuse to happen.

So it was a bad summary. Now that I've found his hiding spots for it, I can see that it WAS continuous behavior. Which is why i wrote that. Who wants to read details about my daily activities to see the exact out of order way I pieced things together?

Last time I use a summary. I'm a better writer for longer narratives anyways.

Doggy is out of the kennel for the moment... I had to give him another medication. Just threw a plastic bag around his bottom half since he's in my lap sleeping(the only activity he ever does). For the moment its working, and is easier than the newspaper since my apartment doesnt have a seperate room or area I can stay with him in to limit the mess.

Forgiven Kaylin. I take these things seriously as well, which is why it hurt when you said that. But it IS much better to know the situation is safe, than to just look the other way. Kudos for being such a loving mommy to your cat.

Put down newspapers. Then you won't have to stick him in his crate. It isn't his fault he's sick. He'll want to be with you for comfort, if he isn't feeling well. No need to jump down Kaylinn's throat--she was only trying to help. Plus, calling the thing "fucker" when he shit in your lap doesn't exactly seem very compassionate--he's SICK.

Obviously, you have other frusterations going on in your life. But--tough titty, kitty--when our pets need us, they need us. Glad it wasn't anything serious.

I thought if properly trained/kenneled, dogs felt like the kennel was their safe place and den?

Glad to hear the little guy's OK. I sympathize with your revulsion at runny animal poop.

My friend used to keep his mini greyhound in a crate, and he liked to be in there. He would just curl up and go to sleep. I don't think they are all bad necessarily. But you probably don't want to try crate training a sick animal. This would be a bad time to try and get him used to it. Plus he'll be covered in his own sick because he'll undoubtedly run around in it and get it in his long fur.
Try to take an hour or so - relax - and then resume creating a good plan to help him get well again. I know it's frustrating, but it's not his fault. You have to consider the best place for him, not what is convenient for you. Not trying to jump down your throat either - just looking out for the little guy. He's adorable, btw. I hope both of you feel better soon.
Oh one more thing - could you give him some kind of chicken stock/broth to hydrate him? Is he eating and drinking normally? Watch that he doesn't become dehydrated.

They gave him some fluids at the vet(a shot), and then he's on a "bland" diet, so he probably will enjoy broth in the morning when he needs to eat again(they said don't feed him for a certain amount of time after the shot)

    It'll be interesting to see.

I'm not thrilled about the idea of leaving him in the kennel. He IS crate trained already, he normally stays in it while i'm at work, and is happy there, but I would worry about him getting an infection, or sick, from being shut up with his own yucky fluids...

He already has fair bits in his fur, I gave him a little bath, but he just messed it up again, so I think I'll just have to wait to give him a thorough cleaning until he's healthy again.

I can even tolerate cleaning runny poo off the floor-its just myself that it seriously freaks me out(sticky things on my skin bother the living CRAP out of me) And he's long been the sort of dog who either sleeps in the kennel, chases another dog, or sleeps in my lap. its just reconciling that last one thats taking work. I ended up thinking of my grandparents, who used to put trash bags under the mattress when my sister slept over, in case of "accidents". Same concept is working fairly well now, and it makes me feel somewhat better. Its been a hard week, this is just the ending...

I think I'm hitting the exhaustion point as well-its hard feeling too bad for the dog when I'm throwing up nearly as much as he is, and have been for over a week(I react to stress by losing my appetite, or having panic attacks and vomiting)! As well as having a lot of seasonal joint pain, its just been CRAZY. WE're both pretty wound up

and we should probably try to sleep now, its been a long day.

They checked for Parvo, as well as GI parasites, and there was NOTHING in it... He seems to be feeling a little better at the moment though, at least he's sort of perky...

I've been told that dogs can, on occasion, get belly flu. My exe's dog was sick like that, wouldn't eat, had the sad face on for days and was excreting all over. Poor thing. It was a big dog too-lab sized.

I hope he's doing better. And you too!

when i first got my dog she developed gastroenteritis (inflammation or infection of the gi tract) it was just from heat and stress, but the symptoms were similar to what you are describing and she needed to be on iv fluids for a couple of days to end the cycle of dehydration and vomiting/diarrhea.

if you don't see improvement within a day then go to another vet for a second opinion. seriously. i can tell you from my own experience that this is critical; you really cannot assume that any vet is a good vet and capable of accurately diagnosing a problem.

hope your puppy feels better soon.

Thats exactly what the vet told me-that if hte cycle hasn't stopped by tomorrow, I should bring him back in to my normal vet, and that they would hospitalize the poor guy and do the IV. So far he seems better though-still a bit of diarrhea, but he hasn't thrown up, and he's eaten pretty well(and is enjoying the broth)

As for the kennel part, it's true most dogs do learn to like their kennel. My 2 year old Golden Retriever is perfectly housebroken, but she still goes into her crate at night to sleep. So while I'd like to get rid of this giant crate in my kitchen, my dog would be too sad without it

The problem with the kennel is that your dog is ill. A dog will NEVER voluntarily pee or shit or get sick in a place it knows is his bed (hence why trainers often recommend locking a pup in a crate for increasing amounts of time at night to get them used to going longer periods of time without accidents).

If he's then locked in the kennel, and he does get sick or poops, it will cause the dog a great deal of stress and anxiety that he messed up his bed...it's against his instincts to stay in an area that's been messed. He then won't be able to relax at all, and that anxiety will probably cause him to get more violently sick elsewhere...and when he does recover, he probably will not willingly go into the kennel again...and then he wont have a designated "safe spot"...which causes more anxiety...which would cause himt o feel more sick...it's a bad slope.

In summary, do NOT lock that dog in its kennel. Lay out newspapers at least 10 feet away from his kennel, and try to set up barriers arund the kennel/newspaper area; if he has any control (he may not, if he's very ill) he will try and make it to the newspaper first rather than mess his bed.

I know its difficult if you have a small apartment, but the above situation is the best thing for a sick pup, like that. And it will be a short term thing, so do what you can to ease your dog's stress at being sick and make him comfortable.
