Default Am I a prude? Kids movies question

OK so this past weekend I took my niece and nephew (8 and 6) to see Shrek 3.

It was cute, I guess. They seemed to like it.

Now, it's been forever since I've seen a kids movie (I think the last one I saw was Toy Story, which was fantastic).

When did they start putting in adult jokes to kids movies? There was a pot-smoking character (albeit brief), some mild sexual innuendo, etc.

Most/all of this went over their heads, but am I wrong/prudish to think that this is just not necessary in a kids movie? It wasn't like it made the movie funnier for me...in fact, it made me a little uncomfortable, and no one laughed at the "jokes."

Or is it just me and I've turned in to my parents?

I do understand. There's some things I'd prefer to not have to explain. (All KINDS, not just drugs & sex- I had to explain nuclear annihilation to my siblings when "Terminator 2" came out.)

It isn't you. It's that Shrek 3 is a PG film, not a G film. So what you saw that wasn't 100% for kids is quite at home in a film with such a rating. The Shrek films have a big enough adult fan base that the makers would be daft to turn it G rated now (the first two Shrek films were also PG for crude humor).

They made it that way so it would be enjoyable for the adults watching. If you rewatch movies from when you were younger, you will notice alot of them are like that. Although, I'm sure it's gotten worse over the years, not to mention(unfortunately) kids seem to be way more "in the know" these days.

The thing was, I DIDN'T enjoy seeing a character rolling out of a carriage trailing pot smoke (a la Spicoli in Fast Times) while sitting next to a 6 year old....or sexual jokes while sitting next to an 8 year old girl...

I guess I should have looked at the PG rating, I will admit I didn't. But I guess I also just assume that a kids movie is...a kids movie. I'd have enjoyed it just as much with no adult references. If I want to see adult themes, I'll go watch a movie without my kids.

But maybe I'm just getting old, I don't know.

Many "kids movies" are being created this way. Movie execs believe that if they put "adult humor" into a movie, the adults would enjoy it themselves, and be more likely to bring their kids.

I mean, think about it; many adults would be bored out of their minds in a true "for kids only" movie, and wouldn't take their kids. They'd wait for the movie to come out on video and pay the much cheaper renting fee and plop their kids in front of the TV...rather than spend the $10 admissions charge per person in addition to popcorn and snacks at a theater

I disagree with the above...I don't recall Toy Story having things like that, and the kids movies I grew up with were completely bereft of things like this and they did ok.

Parents take their kids to movies so the kids can be entertained, not themselves.

Nope, this is a fairly new invention, but its becoming increasingly common...Happy Feet had a lot of adult jokes, for instance.

Movies with pure kid jokes do okay...but they dont typically become blockbusters like the Shrek franchise has; an dthat's because it appeals to not one set audience.

I'm not saying its right, only that studies have proven that parents will take their kids to the movies more often if there is some adult-centered jokes to keep their interest as well as their kids.

Unfortunately, parents like yourself, who are uncomfortable with their children being exposed to that, are more and more a rarity.

Toy Story was geared 100% towards kids. G rated, not PG. As in, no want for a massive adult fanbase.

I've kind of disliked Shrek from the beginning. Think about it, the whole premise is to treat people the same no matter how they look and they make fun of the short king the entire time. Hypocritical much?

you're not just getting old; i completely agree with you. kids are being exposed to far too much adult information far too quickly now.

and, really, since when did adults require crude humor to be entertained? i mean, are we really that far gone? i think it's really sad that screenwriters and film makers rely so heavily on what are basically bathroom humor or softcore porn. i see so many films that shouldn't need any of that to be perfectly entertaining and still they are filled with it anyway.

and the whole, "oh, the kids don't get it; it's like secret humor to satisfy the parents" justification doesn't fly for me either. even if they don't fully understand it, kids get the gist most of the time and sometimes i think that's even worse.

Not sure since when, but you wouldn't believe how many times a day I hear "Oh, it's not rated R, I don't wanna see it!" at work (movie wenching work, that is)

I rewatched some older Disney movies and there's adult jokes in that stuff too... and a lot of kid's shows! I was amazed when I started watching all the stuff I used to and caught really adult humour. I didn't get it when I was a kid.

Really its not a new invention at all.. Go back to say, Roger Rabbit with Jessica Rabbit oozing sexuality.. that was in '88 and the kids (and adults) loooooooved Roger Rabbit.. geezus was that nearly 20 years ago!?

For that matter, go back and check out the old Looney Tunes from the 40's.. (if you can find them uncensored) those things, on the surface were for the kiddies, but were chock full of adult innuendo and jokes in the dialogue.

The problem with Shrek 3 was mainly that it just wasn't a good movie. It was boring and trying too hard to recapture the goodness of the first two. When a movie like that tries too hard, the adult humor usually buried in some cleverness tends to rise up and look ugly... like a zit.

This is not a new thing. I grew up on Ghostbusters, which is chock-full of adult humor but I never picked up on it when I was a kid. Same with Little Shop of Horrors (the musical, not the original), and probably everything else I watched at that age.

I understand, I did mention to my BF that there were a lot of adult jokes in the movie. I'm guessing it's so the parents can have something to laugh at as well. Some parents were even complaining there wern't enough adult jokes!

I don't think Ghostbusters, Roger Rabbit, or Little Shop of Horrors are kids movies, so not sure those analogies hold up.

I'm thinking movies like "Benji," or Disney movies, or things like that.

Glad to see some people agree with me.

Shrek is NOT a kids movie

It was never meant for kids, it is an ADULT cartoon.

Its PG people which means it is not geared towards kids.

While it is usally super-clean and cheesy there are even a few adult jokes on Full House

Michelle:What do they do on their honeymoon?
Uncle Jesse: Well, uh.... they get to know each other.
Michelle: Don't they know each other before the wedding?
Uncle Jesse: Possibly... but now they don't have to hide it from their parents.

If I remember correctly The Santa Clause and Hocus Pocus had some adult humor. Some of the animated Disney movies had mild adult humor... not to mention half-naked women.

For anyone who has seen The Year Without a Santa Claus... how obviously gay are the Miser Brothers?

Shrek is not meant for kids, plain and simple. Yet so many people took their kids out to see it, of course its gonna have kiddie stuff for it. From day one though I never once saw Shrek as a kids movie. Its PG(duh) and its just more of an adult cartoon IMO.

Yet at the same time I don't see why its such a big deal. Kids these days are old anyway. Hell I bet there are some 12 year old kids out there who've sucked more cock then I ever have.

Yup, think about Lion King. Oh, and I second Roger Rabbit. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only little girl who one day hoped to be as "sexy" as Jessica Shit, she was hot!!!

There are 10 and 12 year old girls who do their makeup nicer then I do, wear sluttier clothes then I wear at work and sucked more cock in their 12 years then I have in my 22 years People blame it on the media and movies and video games... which I think is stupid. Parents are just looking for an out. Anyway thats a whole different topic that I don't want to be responsible for starting.
