    Angry Pissed. Off. (long)

I'm so FUCKING PISSED right now! Okay, so basically... my water pump broke on Thursday. I own a BMW and my dad owns about 6 BMW's and we've always gone to a place by my parents house (I've since moved about 40 minutes away) and they've always been honest and done a good job. I mean, a guy who brings all of his cars in for oil changes and everything else for years... I can understand how they do good stuff. So, I had my car towed to this place. They replaced the water pump, repaired blades on the radiator fan, replaced some belts that were about to go, and replaced the thermostat housing (because in my car, it's so close to the radiator that it warps over time and causes my coolant sensor to go off... which was driving my crazy). That was all well and good... I was slightly pissed that my dad called them and told them to call HIM instead of ME about everything (he likes to pretend I'm still his little girl). So, I get to my parents house to get ready to pick up my car... and my dad and brother had already fetched it for me. This is when my brother noticed that the place didn't fucking attach the fucking FAN! It was seriously just SITTING THERE! Personally, I would have had a bitch fit... but the guy was on his way to our house to fix it and there was apparently no real damage since it's about a 3 mile drive and my dad and brother were VERY defensive of him (so I figured I should just calm down). Anyways, afterwards, my brother told me to replace my rear tires and made me swear not to drive anywhere until I got that done. I was like, "Fine, whatever, I promise". I drove my car home from my parents house and noticed a fine spray of what looked like motor oil on my bumper. I figured they accidentally got oil on my car in the shop. The next morning (Friday), I drove the couple miles and got my tires replaced. The next day (Saturday) I drive (30 minutes) to work. As soon as I get off the freeway, my car starts jerking around second gear (it's automatic). By the time I got the couple of miles to the parking lot of work, there's a huge puddle forming under my car and there's a LOT more oil on my bumper. I had to have it towed. Because of the holiday, I had to wait till Tuesday to figure out what was up.

The outcome? (Remember, my dad has decided to take over for me, ugh) They said a clamp (I believe my father said it was a clamp) on one of the lines was loose and all my transmission oil leaked out and I need a new tranny. Yea, I was just a LITTLE suspicious with the time frame here. However, once again my father and brother wouldn't let me get two fucking words in about my thoughts and just said that they'd "take care of it" and I "shouldn't worry about it".

I FINALLY got through to my dad today! I told him that in order to replace the water pump, they had to pull the radiator. In order to pull the radiator, they had to disconect the transmission oil cooler lines and that I found it very hard to believe that any small leak or problem turned into a gusher that completely drained all of my transmission oil the fucking DAY (because I'd noticed the oil.. that had apparently gotten over my bumper from the wind and what not) I get my car back. I think that THEY didn't tighten whatever they found that was loose.

Those fucking bastards! My dad is usually so on top of this shit! I can't fucking BELIEVE he was just about to take it up the ass! I've had this car for 6 years and NOTHING like this has ever happened. Other than new tires, fluids, etc. I have not had ONE problem!

I'm SO PISSED! I want to break something! I will NEVER go back to that place again! From now on, my dad can stay out of my fucking car affairs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    wow.....
They need to pay to replace your tranny. They obviously didn't tighten it properly. I woudl take it to a new garage, get a second opinion that SAYS yes, they ddidnt replace it, it's nto a coincidence. Take that letter back to the BMW garage, and tell them if they dont fix it your going to court. Tranny's are nto cheap to replace.

    That really sucks....

Oh, I will absolutely be taking them to court if they don't own up to this! I'm just worried my dad is going to try to fight me on it! (Why they are so defensive of this place, I cannot understand.)

Now I am not sticking up for them here, but Make sure the clamp that broke, or loosened up was on the radiator side of the cooler lines, and not the connections at the transmission itself. Then I would go to the owner of the shop that your dad uses, and explain to him, that it was his companies negligence that caused your transmission to fail. Furthermore that as a long time family customer, you feel that the right thing to do would be to pay for the repairs needed for your car. ( if his company is negligent they have shop keepers insurance to cover this sort of thing) .

NOW if he refuses to take responsibility, take the car to BMW and have them fix it. Also have them document that the cause of failure was due to lack of fluid, and that the lack of fluid was due to the clamp either missing, or left loose. Then take him to small claims court, and report him to Better Business agency.

Pm me is I can be of any assistance, I own a Transmission shop here on the Eastcoast, and have been to court many times.

My parents neighbor sells and works on the cars (he owns a used car shop and a repair shop or something like that) and I gave him a call. I then called the mechanic myself to find exactly where the leak was. He said that the leak was where the cooler line goes back into the transmission. I called my neighbor back. He said that area would be in the middle of the car (where I would be sitting) and that it was basically impossible (although he also said that nothing in this world is impossible) for that to have loosened on it's own. He also said that it was pretty hard to prove. My dad and brother are planning on getting a transmission out of another car for less than 1k (my brother's trying to talk me into one from a private seller for $100, but that just makes me nervous).

There was NO leak there before I took my car in. If my dad doesn't bring it up to the guy for me (because he's good at staying calm, cool and collected), I'll do it myself. I will never go back to this place and if anyone else in my family does, they're retarded.

My car's at the shop right now (until a new tranny can be found) and I have my sisters car. I'm trying to cheer myself up at the fact that I'm at least mobile during all of this... But her Jetta is just not the same!

A regular just offered to cover the cost. Which I am eternally grateful for... However, it somehow doesn't make me any less pissed off.

Im not sure what year, and or model BMW that you have, and I agree with your neighbor that it is almost impossible for those lines to loosen up on their own. Some of those vehicles however use a metal line that turns to rubber with a metal crip all around. These types of lines are notorious for leaks, especially if they were weak to begin with and then moved around execessivly while the water-pump was being replaced.

OH goodness I got so angry for you.

I know you probably really love your dad and all...but unless he was willing to pay for the work, he should never have insisted to handle it himself...your money, you handle it.

It's so weird your family is so defensive of this place. Is it a family friend or what?

Not a family friend although they've been going to them for... maybe ten years now. Maybe it's denial? My dad is willing to pay for it... he was planning on it even. But, he also doesn't know what I do for a living so he thinks I'm struggling. Still, I'm not going to let him pay for it. Although he doesn't want to believe it, I'm a grown woman and I can handle it. I'm going to go drink by the pool and try to cheer up.

Ok the 1996 328is uses a transmission called a 4l30e it is manufactured by General Motors, and is also used in the Isuzu Troopers. Unfortuanatly BMW uses a different electrical system than the rest so you would need a transmission from a BMW. Also this transmission most often had metal lines that run from the radiator to the transmission with No rubber sections. Which means that someone either left it loose, cracked a line or fitting by moving the line excessivly.

If it had been leaking prior to repair, you would have seen the mist on the rear bumper. I would suspect that they cracked the line, or the fitting while doing the water pump. I would ask to see the car on a lift, and have them point out to you where the leak was coming from. see if it looks like any of the fittings or sections or line look like they were recently fixed.

Either way I would not let this slide, I would fight them to the end on this one, because weather by negligance or accident it sounds like their fault!

So if they cracked it when they were moving the lines around... even if it was old... it is fair for them to still be responsible, correct? Do you think that they are aware that this is due to them? Hm, I'm thinking something like, "How do you think this happened? I didn't have this leak before the car was brought in for repairs the day before." Should I say, "Do you think it happened when..." or "I think it happened when...". I don't want to piss them off, but i want to let them know that I am aware.

My high point of the day: The uneasy voice of the mechanic when I called ONLY to ask him where the leak was.

    Dear Mr. Mechanic,

I was wondering if I could come down to the shop, so we could put the car up the lift so we can look at it together, and you could show me axactly where this leak is, and explain to me what happened. Then when you are looking at it if you see any evidence of poor woorkmanship Ie: a kinked and cracked line, or cracked fitting I would say to him how does something like that happen all of the sudden? Then wait for his reply see what he has to say and take it from there. If you feel after looking at it that it is his fault ( which I believe it was , I would say something like

Hey Bill my family has been coming to you for 20+ years, and you and your guys usually do impeccable work, and take good car of our cars. However wether it be by accident or honest mistake something happened to my car while it was in your care that caused this, and we need to come to some kind of arrangement to correct this situation. I didn't have this problem when I brought the car to you, and I would think that in the course of checking the car over if it had been leaking badly enough to cause this kind of failure, you would have noticed the leak in your shop , and on your floor, and called my dad to take care of it before it failed completly

Go from there and see how it goes, Accusing him out right will put him on the defensive, and make dealing with him a royal pain in the ass. Treating him with a few ounces of respect may get you alot further

I recently had those problems too hon right before my car died. I know how us women get about our vehicles. It's our security and freedom at stake here. And then we have certain men that come into the picture, each one claiming they know what's wrong and each one with a different idea of what's wrong. They make us feel like idiots and of course we feel vunerable relying upon them to fix the car then they fuck things up even worse, go figure
