    Default Phone insurance bullshit

I lost my phone on may 10th. It took a whole week and about 2 hours worth of waiting on hold to get the imei blocked and to get a replacement sim card sent out. So I went a week without my usual phone number.

Anyway to sum up what happened I will paste the complaint email that I sent to my service provider:

    Hi there,
My name is *****. My mobile is ******. I lost my phone on the 10th May 2007 and I am very dissatisfied with how this has been dealt with. Firstly it took just over a week to block the imei and for me to receive my replacement sim card. Secondly I had to keep calling to see if this had been done which resulted in me being on the phone to the virgin team and waiting on hold for a totaly of 2 hours in one week (this was 4 different phone calls).

I am now in the process of getting a replacement handset from the insurance company that I have a policy with through virgin and they have not been helpful either. My phone was a Samsung D900 and even though I paid for insurance for this phone I have been told that I have a choice of either:

    Motorola Kr2r
    Nokia N73
    Erikson K800i

I am not happy with any of these phones. I just wanted the Samsung D900 replaced. I realise that the terms of the policy stated that the phone would be replaced with an equivalent model and this does not necessarily mean the same model, however I have visited several mobile phone retailers and have been told that in their opinion none of the above handsets are equivalent to the D900 and the Erikson K800i is in fact an old model. Further, I have been told that I cannot be given any Samsung phone because they do not stock Samsung phones. I think it was misleading to provide insurance on these terms. It should be stated that they do not deal in Samsungs at all and I would not have bothered getting the insurance at all. Coupled with the $130 excess I do not believe that it was at all worth paying for the insurance. I am going to end up with a phone that I do not want and have to pay $130 for it.

So in conclusion I am not going to bother going through with the claim and I wish to stop paying the $9 per month for this insurance as it is a complete waste of time.

Um, why the hell would anyone buy a phone on a plan anyway?

Pre-paid all the way baby! No hassles.

By the time you "pay off" the phone on the plan and everything, better phones are available.

I've had problems with phone insurance myself, albiet with Vodafone. In fact, my overall experience with Vodafone was abysmal. First up, I bought a $400 phone, on a terms contract. The screen of said phone shattered within a fortnight. I had not thought to take insurance out on the phone, and I wanted the same phone as a replacement. In order to get another phone, they said, I would have to pay out the entirety of the first contract. This was a struggle for me, but I took out a loan and did it. I got a second identical phone and insured it this time. Everything was fine for a month or two. Then the second phone got stolen. I put in a police report but at the time had just lost my job and could not afford to pay the excess (along with the phone bills for installments and minimum monthly payments they kept sending me). In the meantime my mother bought me a pre-paid Optus phone for Christmas. As a result, I decided not to pay the excess because I didn't want a replacement phone (partly because Vodafone had been so unhelpful both times I'd had major problems but mostly because, having the pre-paid phone, I no longer needed one). I asked Vodafone if they could stop billing me for installments on the contract (as well as the minimum monthly on my cap), since I no longer had a phone with them. They refused, telling me I could either pay the excess and get a replacement phone, or pay out the contract according to its terms, despite the failure of consideration. Grrr. I might as well have not bothered.

When I did prepay in Australia I always used to keep an extra $10 phone card in my wallet. There are a lot of 24 hour 7-11s as well.

Here I just log onto the company website and enter my eftpos card details and within seconds I have more credit. I can also call. I think Vodaphone was doing that in Australia when I left.

At least you don't have to get the card, call a special number, enter a code, write down a special secret code, call another number, then you get your credit.... I refuse to buy the cards here, the internet is so much easier.

Oh one other thing, Jaizaine, even if your not going to replace the phone on the 'insurance' make sure you get a new simcard for your contract. Many as flickad experienced will not cancel the contract if you no longer have access to the phone etc. This happened to a friend of mine as well. Phone got stollen, sim card tossed, and they still had to pay out the contract. All they had to do was buy a 2nd hand phone, and pay 20 bucks for the sim card, but they refused. So they paid a thousand or so they did not have to.

They replaced the sim already with the phone number I have had for years.

What I was wondering is do u think that they would pay out my contract instead of replacing the handset? I know they prob wont but I suppose it might be worth asking coz I dont want to be with this service provider anymore after all the shit but I just started a contract 4 months ago and it's for 24 months.

Well, they actually did have to pay out that money. There's a risk of getting sued for breach of contract and a greater risk that the debt will affect your credit rating if left unpaid.

If they're anything like Vodafone, they'll enforce the contract whether or not you retain a phone with them.

I would advise the you see a solicitor! After they draft up a letter, you will more then likely get your demands met!

I want to have my rant about dumb phone companies!

I have been with 3(three) for several years now, with the same number, recently jumped on a capped plan. They change the deals ever week,so it is so hard to keep up with the new deal! They dont email you the details nor do they sms, they just update the website and expect you to check it out! URGH! I signed up for updates but nothing about their current deals

Well recently with DP going overseas I had to call international. Well I had built up a $800 blil on top of my normal account of $150. No probs I will pay the bill, not disputing it! I made those calls I will pay for it! What pisses me off is that a rude bastard called bob calls up and says you give me your CC details now and pay 50% of the amount owed or I will disconnect your phone! I said let me speak to your supervisor and got his customer service ID number.

I told the supervisor it sounds really scammish to call people demanding for CC details with out verifying themselves and with out the company letting you know prior in the form of written that such calls would be made. After telling him that it is a company phone and the bill will be paid and to not call me regarding my bill any more, if I make the calls I will pay for the calls... UGH how fucking rude!

In one way your right, and one way your wrong.

Yes they did have to pay that money, however the manner in which it was collected could have been to some benefit for them rather than no benefit at all.

As long as I can afford to do so, I'd rather finish out a contract than cancel it and pay the difference, especially when I can still benefit from what I am paying for.

Don't get Sprint either. People will call and leave messages for me and sometimes I don't get a voicemail notification till 3 days later. I also don't get any service in the more rural areas around here or in the mountains. Regarding the voicemail problem, they couldn't resolve it and came to the conclusion that it was indeed my phone causing the problem. They won't replace the damn thing because they said I didn't have insurance on the phone!

It's actually rather easy to keep a pre-paid phone having credit.

So you would rather the BS of being on a plan than having the 'inconvienence' (which isn't that big of one since pretty much everywhere/anywhere you can top up your pre-paid phone credit) of a pre-paid phone.

    ???

From what I have read, I am on the better deal. I havn't had any stress or problems or anything. I am only stressed when I loose my phone however I have gotten around that by writing down my contact list ... so if I loose my phone.. I don't loose the numbers/contact list.

the proeblem that i had with pre-paid is that it doesnt get service everywhere that i go... i live in kansas, where even SPRINT doesnt get service in the main cities that well! and because i'm travelling from here to there and everywhere in ks all week, prepaid doesnt give me the service when i'm surrounded by 100 miles of nothing and a few cows.
the only company that i've had that was able to get service on a consistent basis was Verizon. and i've had sprint/nextel, alltell, cellularone, cingular/att, and a variety of prepaid services.
another problem that i had with the prepaid is that for the longest time, i was pre-pay, but then they switched me to post pay? but the next month i was prepay again, they kept doing it until i realized i had paid double for 6 months of service in a 10 mile calling radius! for a phone WITH insurance that they refused to replace when it had a software problem! i threw the phone at the custy rep and told him that if he didnt refund my money for the phone and what i had overpaid for my service, that there would be serious problems. got my money and walked out of that place!

I agree with GCG. Ive had bullshit with phone insurance in the past (nothing like yours though Jaizaine though I know people who have been through simular and had their phones replaced with bricks after X amount of hasstle....) I decided pre-paid was the better option after that. The money you pay for insurance would probably cover a good phone in the long run if you should need one again.

Americans - Australia has different phone networks and service. Most pre paid accounts are as good as billed accounts, I feel better often too.

Jaizaine - I just always have a spare prepaid slip handy so if it runs out its not usually a problem. Ive been with Vodafone for about 8 years and their deals and service for prepaid seem really good to me. (I didnt like them much for billing, but that was 10 years ago now so i dont know if things have changed.)

DONT EVER GO TO TELSTRA!!!!! Lol - I could write a long story about the shit ive been through with them since Feb!

Oh yes GCG, someone I was speaking to the other day was telling me about how the phone companies can put all of your contact details from your phone onto your computer so that if you loose of change phones its really simple to put the contacts in. Something like that anyway. I would imagine with more modern phones you can just download the info, but Ive never thought to look, lol.
I used to also have a little device that did this but I think I left it in England...

Replaced with a brick - so true.

It's the game of insurance - they are happy to take your money but when it comes to paying out pffft more trouble than it's worth.

I will never pay for insurance for a mobile phone again.

    So my plan:

I am going to buy a new phone on ebay.

I am going to refer my complaint with both virgin and MLH insurance brokers to the telecommunications ombudsman and see what happens.

Most new mobiles that u buy now come with a cd rom and if u instal it on your computer it will allow u to synchronise your contact list from your phone onto your computer to back it up. You just connect your mobile to the computer with a usb.

^^Yeah but you still have to buy the cable, or the ir port, or the bluetooth adaptor. Get the cable on ebay, that way your not getting ripped off.

That sounds terrible to take so long to get simple things done . I have a question for all . I have two phones now that I use ( very rarely ) but my service is with Sprint I can cancel now and not pay a penalty but I am wondering can I use the phones I have with another provider . Is it just a matter of getting a new sim card ? Also can I go with pre-paid with these phones ? My Mother has pre-paid and it seems like the way to go for people like me who rarley use them . What do you guys think ?
