    Default Depression and Weight Gain

Does anyone know if Depression could have an impact on weight gain. I know if you are depressed and eat more you will gain weight. But I am curious to know if Derpression itself could slow down your metabolism. I have been suffering from horrible depression over the past year. I was on zoloft, but I stopped taking it in Feb. Since then I have gained almost 30lbs. I never really had weight issues before and even after my daughter was born I lost all the weight right away. The weight has just snuck up on me so quickly. I am now making a lot of positive changes in my life including a divorce from my husband and want to lose the weight as well. I want to get back to being my old self. I am so unhappy when I look in the mirror. I can hardly believe it is me. I need to get myself back into shape. My husband (soon to be ex) has left me without any money and I need to go back to dancing a couple of nights a week to supplement my income from my day job.

Zoloft stopped working for me so now I'm on Lexapro. So far so good...As far as the weight gain, yes I've noticed a gain in weight when I am suffering depression. I think I gain weight moreso because I'm stagnant (being still/inactive) rather than out and about, moving around.

My doctor has been encouraging me to get out and workout, and I still haven't gotten to energy to that that still..easier said than done. Maybe I'll start out slow and do a workout DVD. I've been staring at my Lotte Berk DVD's for weeks now, so maybe it's time I pop one of those in.

I recommend getting some sun- it helps your body desire less food (Vitamin D production) & the sunlight helps with mood & sleep regulation. (PS Check if your medications make you sun-sensitive.)

(YES I know skin cancer is a concern for many, buy a good sunscreen & wear a hat....)

I love the sunshine suggestion. Alot of days when I feel crappy I like to lay out and get some sun. Professionals also offer light therapy to help elevate mood but hwy pay when its for free. A good 30min or less always helps with the rest of my day.

Common sense, but I've never thought about that..when I feel extra down in the dumps, just turning on Judge Mathis makes me feel better ha. Maybe I'll start hanging around outside..or go to the park and just sit and get some some and fresh air. Good ideas girls...Anymore?

Yes, I think depression can make you can weight. It depends on the person, though. Like, some people lose weight when they're depressed. Depression affects more than your eating habits, it affects your chemistry. (For example, if you're stressed, your body will release cortisol and you'll start packing on the pounds around your middle.) However, thirty pounds in three months is a LOT! Think carefully. Has there been a change in your eating/exersize/booze intake/drug use in the past few months?

I would definately go see a doctor about it. It might be a side-effect of Zoloft. Why did you stop taking it?

LOL..too funny. I usually force myself to go to the beach, or the pool. Swimming always makes me feel better. Go for a walk, call a friend you havent talked to for awhile, rent a movie, cuddle up with your pet(if you have one) and take some nyquil for a good nights sleep. I always gain atleast 5-10 pounds when im stressed.

Depression can definatly cause weight gain, just cause yoru more inactive, and all you wanna do is sit in the house, and when you sit in the house to much, you start snacking, eating more....

Onthe other hand...being active can help lift depression. Espicially being active outdoors in the sunlight. Try taking a short walk outside every day. That will help a lot.
Being active also helps lift depression because you kind of keep your mind busy with other things, crowding out the worry.

I don't know about it slowing your metabolism. I'd think it's possible as stress and emotions can affect your health.

Usually people gain because they are less active and eating more. The good news is most depression is treatable with drugs and/or therapy and changes in lifestyle.

Try to get more sunshine and do an activity you love this summer. Stock up on fresh foods and when you want to wallow and snack mindlessly when you are not actually hungry, train yourself to drink lots of water, maybe with some fresh lemon or have some nice herbal or green teas.

A lot of depression occurs concurrently with hypothyroid, in which case yes it can make you gain weight.

Someone posted a study recently about treating depression with thyroid meds...

Yes, depression can make you seek serotonin rich foods, like bread and sweets which tend to put the weight on.
