    Default lose diploma over cheering!!??!!

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070601/...Ez5XoUNMDMWM0F

At the University I went to the University police threatened the students with arrest if they did anything besides walk across stage. Apparently blowing kisses, waving, and shouting I love you mom had been way to much for them before. I just think this is kind of sick as this is the students day. Maybe the school should think about better speakers. Anyone have any thoughts?

Well, they should have just done a mandatory mental health screening on any attendees prior to their attendance.

That is some pretty bad shit.

All kinds of metaphors to be made about "what is this world coming to" and "our generation" and "damn mom you fucked up so bad you wouldn't even let me get my diploma."

Eh graduation is more for the audience anyway than the actual students...

Graduation is supposed to be a dignified ceremony. My own high school graduation was in a cathedral and all cheering and applause were prohibited. It was a dignified occasion in which we all received equal time and respect.

When I went to my friends' public school graduation, I was appalled. It was a total free-for-all; at one point the (very fat) principal had to go to the podium and tell everyone to settle down, at which point a kid screamed, "Sit down, Butterball!" I would've been withholding diplomas too. If you're adult enough to graduate from high school, then you're adult enough to restrain yourself until the ceremony is over.

I'm used to moderate cheering at graduation. I think the outright denial of it is kinda stiff, honestly. I think that, if it's the same sort of applause as they have at say, the end of a school play, or in between songs at a performance, that would be totally acceptable. This is, after all, kids (ok, kindasorta kids) doing something great. Rejoicing is normal. I'm all for cracking down on rude behavior, however. Insults, talking during speeches, etc.

I think the issue is that its everyone's time when they go up to recieve their diploma. its not an indviduals time, granted their name is called, walk acorss the stage, get a piece of apper, and go sit-down. But, the whole ting, diploma, speeches, etc is for the class, not the individual.

Imagine being the next kid to go up after you hear hooting and hollering, and you don't get anything, it will make you feel a little bit bad I would imagine.

At my graduation there was one girl who got her degree and stuck her hands in the air (like you just don't care (sorry I had to)) and jumped for like 3 seconds, but I remember I, as well as other people around me were mortified that she would do such a thing. The whole presentation is for everyone, not just her...

In Crazy-Ass California, cheering was prohibited UNTIL the end of the ceremony (clapping was allowed for speeches). Then everyone went nuts- everything from walking onto the stadium field to get your graduate to fireworks (aerial) was allowed. Awwww, some very nice memories.

I couldn't stand a ceremony that was too much like a religious service...Graduations mean too much to the whole family for all merriment to be banned.

Well, would you scream and holler at a wedding? It's also a joyous lifecycle event that means a lot to everyone involved. And there's a big party too where you CAN go nuts, dance, cheer, whatever. But the wedding itself is celebrated with order and dignity; it's still pleasant and smiling, but respectful. A graduation should be the same way.

You and I are in a agreement. It's been about 10 years since I have been to a HS graduation ceremony, but I was also appalled at what I saw and heard. Kids dancing up to the stage, literally doing jigs like they just scored a touchdown in the NFL, with members of the audience blaring horns and screaming. It was like a sporting event.

A graduation ceremony is supposed to be a dignified event, not a hootenanny or free-for-all.

That's terrible! What asshole came up with the idea to take their diplomas away!? "Um, yea... I WOULD put high school diploma down on the application... but they took it away from me."

Kids were relatively well-behaved at my high school graduation (like, a couple of beach balls bouncing around) but my COLLEGE graduation was a zoo! Beach balls, other beach toys, silly string, confetti poppers, etc. were being tossed around... and it didn't help that they were confiscated. People came WELL prepared, lemme tell ya! Oh, and there was some jerk in the parents/friends seating area with this really loud spinning thing (you know what I"m talking about?) I can't believe someone sitting next to that guy didn't throw him off the balcony.

i don't understand why they are punishing the students for people in the audience yelling? it's not like the student had control of them.

punish the ones that "broke the rules", not the student.

If a graduation was at a church , no I think I wouldn't cheer. But the two events have little in common beyond being major life events. It's more than two people doing something at once, so waiting until the end to show some love for YOUR kid(s) or friend(s), which can be up to over an hour or two, is kinda tough on happy friends and parents. And the school's gym or auditorium or football field doesn't command the same shushness as a church does. I dunno... just me.

Now, I have to admit... I was a bit offended by my male's sister's graduation. No one stopped talking for ANY of the ceremony. Ever. Hard to hear, etc... and people just wandered out before the end of the ceremony. Whereas at all of the graduations I've been to did it so that folks clapped for their kids after their name, but never during announcement of the names, nor during speeches.. and they stayed until the grads walk out, as per the list of What's Happening When in the pamphlet.

Paige, I think the issue is, it's rude for the others that are graduating. The article even said that the ruckus at the school was so bad that a lot of parents complained that they couldn't hear their child's name being called out.

That, and it is supposed to be a dignified event.

I did find at the HS grad that I went to, the amount of noise made seemed to be inversely proportional to the probability that HS graduation was the high point of the child's likely educational attainment.

^^ I'm aware. That was a problem at my male's sister's graduation. What I think is OK is when folks cheer between names. Not during.

I think some light cheering is ok...the problem is, people take advantage of it and next thing you know, you have air horns and all kinds of stupidity.

They would of died at my graduation, we had so many things that they would of flipped over with like we sang, waved, of it was just one huge party!

Someone actually DID have airhorns at said male's sibling's graduation. It wasn't too bad since it was at the football field but... yeah. Lame.

Well, at that point the ceremony is over and it's time for the celebration to begin. What I'm talking about is in the middle of the ceremony where it is disruptive - like if the minister said, "Do you, Sassy, take this man -" and forty screaming relatives drowned him out with screaming and air horns.

I'm all about celebration at the end of the ceremony. Just not in the middle of it.

Maybe the kids are so stupid they don't realize they ALREADY graduated, and when they get their diplomas they know for sure.....in that case, well it's STILL the parents' fault!
