Default Friend Found Ultimate Weight Loss Drug(s)

So my friend was prescribed a medication, and along with taking OTC drugs (not to lose weight at first mind you) the prescription and OTC meds are making her lose weight like mad. Like 2 pounds a day, times 20 days. It's getting scary. It was an accidental cocktail and she didn't intend to lose weight but now she can't stop. I will not tell the cocktail here because a)it's super easy to get and works and b)I know there are some ladys here that don't need to hear about it. Anyways what should I do? It's not like she's starving herself, she just doesn't want to quit the pills, but she still eats. Blah. I hate this.

Since one is prescribed..maybe tell her doc. And stop taking the cocktail....

although I admit...I want to know what it is....

Sc Im' glad that you're not willing to disclose this publically. Yes, I agree she should consult her doctor. 2lbs per day is not healthy at all...

Look the drugs up online and find out what the possible side-effects and long-term effects are. Then give your friend the information. Perhaps sanity will prevail if she is given hard evidence that her health is at risk.

Do you think I can call her doctor and say as a friend she has lost 40 pounds in under a month (she's 5'4, 145 pounds) so she now weighs 105. Can I tell him he should request a weigh in before he refills the prescription? He just refills it every time she calls so he never sees her. She is so tiny.

105 isn't that underweight for her height, maybe 5lbs or so underweight at most. The problem is if she keeps losing. I would personally not call her doctor behind her back, at least not at this stage (since it does not sound like she has gotten to an overly unhealthy weight as yet and as such the danger is not so immediate as to warrant a step that she'd likely see as a massive breach of trust). However, I would discuss the issue with her, perhaps telling her (if she's resistant to your concern and insists on losing a bunch more weight) that if you see much further weight loss then you'll have no choice but to discuss the issue with her doctor.

Well the problem is she doesn't realize how much weight she has lost. I asked her if she wanted to lose anymore weight and she said "yes, maybe another 20". That's SO scary for her height. And she keeps saying if her doc won't prescribe it it's so easy to get online.

You should definitely tell her all your concerns, and try calling the doctor if she won't listen to you. Although HIPAA restrictions will prohibit the doc from discussing her care with you, he might listen if you tell him she's lost 40 pounds in a month.

I'll admit it, I really want to know what it is too.

Well, if she lost down to 85lbs or so, she'd definitely be putting herself at risk for major health problems. These include loss of menstrual periods and resultant bone loss. Ask her if she's keen on the idea of pushing a walker in ten years, because her bone density has deteriorated to the level of a seventy-year-old's. Hip replacement surgery before you hit middle age isn't sexy or fun.

To me, it sounds like your friend might have an eating disorder and is just using these drugs as an excuse, or a cover-up, for why she's losing the weight. The "still want to lose 20 lbs" is what put me over the fence on this. She might have a distorted body image and e.d.--sounds like denial to me.

Oh gosh, please talk to her about adjusting this! Get help if she won't listen; this is scary!

I don't know whether or not the drugs are a cover for a well-hidden ED, but it does sound like she has one. It's almost unheard of for someone without an ED of some kind to see 20lbs that shouldn't be there when they're already 5lbs underweight.

Well I'm saying it's the meds because it was so rapid right after she was taking them. Like a week. Massive weight loss, more so then ever just starving yourself could work. And I've seen her eat every day this week.

Would you mind Pm'ing me with what she is taking? My husband is a doctor (has been doing recent work on ed's) and I'd like to get his opinion, and maybe shed some light on it for you.

I don't know, I'm scared to give it out because of the drastic effects. I've never seen anything like this. She stays up for days on end perky and not jittery, just keeps dropping weight. I'm scared to give it out because it seems SO out of control.

Just wanted to say it is NOT stupid to be so scared and crying; she is your friend and you love her. You care.

Oh sweetheart! I'm so sorry that you're going through this. She is seeing the doc for her prescription, I think he should pick up on the drastic weight loss (I hope) But After reading your last post about being up for days, etc. it sounds like she may be taking more than what she's telling you. Possibly some sort of illegal drug (coke, meth) or she may just be having a particularly strong reaction to what's been prescribed. I don't have any IM programs on this computer or I'd give it to you.

She stayed at my house for a week and she ONLY took the pills, I watched her, I demanded to. Because I did think it was coke at first. I wish it was coke and it wasn't so easy.

Sorry I just re-read about her doc not seeing her before he fills the scrip, so perhaps that phone call is in order. Have you looked these meds up online? To see if there's any info on these sorts of side effects?

^The prescription drug doesn't have weight loss listed as a side effect.

As far as I know, doctors only fill scripts for so long without an in person visit. I think it might be a requirement, but my docs always gave me about 3-6 refills and then made sure I had to make an appointment to see them in their office and they could evaluate me before they gave me more refills.

^I've had doctors do this with meds like birth control. This med isn't like Valium, it's a common and harmless medication, can't OD on it, or anything. That's why he does it.

What was the scrip for? And is it working for what it was supposed to treat?
