    Default question about navel piercings

calling all dancers, gymnasts, and other athletes on here who have had navel piercings done...

Is this a bad idea? I'm thinking of getting it done, but I'm afraid that navel rings and serious gymnastics training wouldn't mix well, and that it would end up getting painfully ripped out. Or that it would get in the way and make things difficult when I practice. Is it possible to take it out for practices and then just put it back in afterward, or would it close up if I tried to do that? What about those flexible plastic things that can be put into a hole to keep it open without having actual jewelry in it; would that work? Anything else I can do?

Or should I just forget it?

Well, I'm not a gymnast, but I've never had any problem with mine. It depends what kind of ring you wear. If you get a little stud, I don't see how it could get in the way of anything. OTOH, I have a couple of big elaborate ones that have snagged on things before (customers' shirts, mostly, and once my own jeans). I tend to wear a little stud for daily wear, and only the big fancy ones when I'm not doing much else.

And yeah, it'll grow together if you don't wear anything in it at first. It takes about two months before you can go with nothing in there. After that you should be able to take it out for practice.

No...you should be fine....sometimes I get stuck to customers shirts or the loofah when I take a bath, but I just untangle it and it's fine.

Dontn wear the long dangly ones.

Hmmm I wouldn't recommend it, really. I have mine pierced, and mine took about 4 months to really heal. During that time it was red and puffy and pus-y (pussy? ha) no matter how often I cleaned it. I did everything right too!

So, it depends on what kind of club you dance it or what kind of gymnastics you do.

In my club it would be impossible because it's medium contact so guys expect you to kind of lay against their stomach, and I wouldn't want an open sore in that dirty environment.

But if you airdance I guess it would be ok.

And no, you can't leave it out for at least 2 months.

Mine took over a year to heal. It was worse when I tried to do yoga with it (god that was painful). Mine closed up within a day after 3 years, so I'd be careful about taking it out.

yeah, the belly button takes quite a while to heal and navel piercings have one of the highest suseptibilities to complications. mainly because the area is difficult to clean and because it usually sustains a fair amount of irritation from clothing.

i personally had no problem with my navel piercing. while it took a few months to be truly healed, it was very close to healed within a couple of weeks. but i was incredibly anal about cleaning it and followed the piercer's instructions religiously. i also got it pierced by a very reputable piercer.

it isn't particularly painful, but if you get it done you should plan on taking a couple of weeks off work. dancing with new piercing exposed is just begging for infection and if it does get infected it can get pretty nasty. and if the gymnastics causes any sort of friction or pressure on the navel area, hold off on that for a bit too.

also, like Yekhefah said, using the small curved barbell or a simple captive bead ring will pretty effectively prevent any sort of snagging. as far as taking it out goes, you can do it eventualy without a problem. i always take mine out whenever i shower and often leave it out overnigt. but for the first year or so i wouldn't leave it out at all. it will just increase the risk of infection and scarring. plus they can start to close up fairly quickly until they're healed.

I got mine done when I was still on the dance team and wearing leotards every day for practice. The leotard was so tight and close fitting that it always rubbed the jewelry and made it hard for the healing to progress. It took between 1-2 years (can't remember exactly) for mine to fully heal.

The only reason I kept mine is because I don't deal well with pain and didn't want to give up what I had to go through to get it pierced! It was a huge pain in the ass to take care of, though.

Navel piercings take a notoriously long time to heal. They're in a spot that gets a lot of movement.

Anyhow I was a gymnast for 9 years and danced and never had any issues related to that with the piercing. It did take a good year to heal and it did get infected once despite vigilant aftercare. In the long run I thought it was worth it though, I still have it.

mine took about 7 months to heal...

i was once a gymnast and on the dance team in school, and I gotta tell you, i'm glad i didn't have the navel piercing then. A lot of movement in that area, especially with gymnastics (crunches, kips, you get my drift), makes it take forever to heal, and you run the risk of causing migration or even rejection if you irritate it too much. That's one of the reasons it takes so long to heal anyway is just everyday torso movement (that and the navel doesn't have as much blood supply to it as other piercings).

Even after 2 months, it probably wont be fully healed, and taking it out and putting it back in before and after practice all the time may further irritate it and slow down the healing process even more.

But you know everyone's body is different, you may be perfectly fine with doing it and being able to do gymnastics during the healing process. Who knows?

As a general rule with piercings...if it hurts, don't do it. So if you find that you can do your gymnastics with the piercing and it's not hurting or becoming red and irritated, then you're fine.

Im a former gymnast and a pole dancer. I have had mine for 7 years and never had any problems with it. I wear a barbell, pretty small in size. If u are worried about it getting caught on something just dont wear one of the really large, dangley ones.

Yeah, lesson learned there. I was practicing one afternoon and saw something shiny on the floor. HELLO dangley barbell! Luckily it didn't rip it out (the ball had come unscrewed), but it scared the crap out of me!

i pole dance for my own entertainment, and actually lost my navel piercing (fully healed at the time - i'd had it for over 7 years) to the pole - i'm not sure exactly what i did, but while wearing a small simple curved barbell, i hit it against the pole, and irritated the hell out of it...over the next few days it just hurt no matter what i did with it, and i ended up taking it out...it felt better immediately...

i still kind of miss it, but i dont' think i'll get it repierced

*shudder* i'm actually more squeamish about snapping nails off really short than piercings being torn out

I wouldn't recommend it. Navel piercings usually take six months to a year to heal. In the meantime if you happen to get knocked in that area it's going to hurt. If you snag the jewelry on anything it's going to hurt. Tight clothing will be uncomfortable, etc.

I've had a belly piercing for seven years and it never interfered with my dancing. I've only ever worn simple jewellery in it though.

The piercing itself took about six weeks to heal, during which time it was painful to the touch and certain movements hurt.

I got mine pierced while I was still dancing. It took approx 6-7 months to heal completely. In the meantime, it was often sore and irritated. I had always thought it was infected because it was so puss-y. I never seemed to get close enough for it to get caught on a custy's clothes - it was always my own clothes that it got caught on. I think you'd be fine if you got it pierced while dancing (or practicing some other physical activity). It might just take a little longer to heal, that's all.

Edited to add, that while dancing I always changed to the sparkly dangly barbells, even while it was healing, and I never had a problem other than the usual soreness/irritation with a new piercing.

If you can get one, I'd recommend a single point piercing/anchor piercing. Basically it's a piece of jewelery with no exit point -- it's bent and then slipped inside of the piercing hole and your body heals around it. They heal very quickly and don't experience as much stress as a normal navel piercing.

I'm planning on getting one on my navel (right above my old navel scar) soon... they're pricey. My roommate has one on her pubic mound and one right below her eye, and both of them have healed well.

thanks everyone I've pretty much decided against it now. I'm thinking I'm going to get an ear cartilage piercing instead--tomorrow! ow, this is going to hurt like fuck...but I feel the need for more sparkly things in more places on my body.
