    Default Gallstones

My sister just texted me from the doc's office saying that she has gallstones and she has to have surgery! Please tell me these aren't serious...? Has anyone had them and had them removed? I'm scared... My sister's the most important person in the world to me... So.... Everything's gonna be okay, right?

She'll be fine. You can live with out your gallbladder completely..my father had his taken out aout 20 years ago. For gall stones it is a very tiny incision...cometimes they can even smash them without cutting with a laser.

One of my problems is a bad gallbladder. I take meds every day to help prevent stones.

I remember my grandmother getting her gallstones removed back when I was a little girl. Everything went fine, she kept the stones in a couple medicine jars.

i had my whole gallbladder removed at 21, and it was really no big deal - the first few days post op were a little rough, but i don't respond well to anaesthesia...just make sure she takes it easy for a couple of weeks to heal...i didn't and ended up herniating one of my incisions, and the surgery to fix that was way worse than the first one...

She may have particularly stinky farts from here on. The gallbladder stores bile, which helps your gut digest fat. Fatty farts = stinky farts.

She should do well. I've seen this surgery done as an outpatient before when it was done minimally invasively.

Thanks everyone! I'm so easily scared by a loved one having to have surgery, even if it's minor...

The thing that sucks is that she's having it done two days after I leave for Germany... So I won't be able to visit her in the hospital or anything. I'll give her a call from a pay phone, though. I'm sure everything will be alright..

The doctor says she must have got them because she's just lost like 60 pounds over the last few months, so rapid weight loss can trigger them. Get this -- she lost the weight with *gasp* diet, exercise, and discipline! It can be done!

there is a gallbladder cleanse ive been reading a lot about lately:

    http://www.cleansingorsurgery.com/cl...urgeryinfo.htm

haven't done it firsthand, but on curezone http://curezone.com/cleanse/liver/default.asp there is a lot of support for it, and i think the actual site recommends it

too much lifting too soon after surgery! i had mine done laparoscopically, and managed to pop the incision in my upper abdomen (the one in the middle, just below the front of my bra) - it's the most common site for a hernia, because it creates a weak spot between the abdominal muscles on each side...i'm not 100% sure, but i did it either sitting up really quickly when my cat landed on my stomach to say hello, or a few days later lifting a box of books - you use your abs for just about everything, so you have to be really careful until you're fully healed...

and yeah, losing a lot of weight is a common cause of gallstones, especially in women under 40...

once you're back to eating somewhat normally again, you'll also probably find a bit of a decreased tolerance for really fatty foods, since you won't be able to digest them as well (i haven't touched pizza since)

I'm about to cry. It's a month after my surgery and I was feeling fine...til a couple days ago. I lifted a couple boxes, I went dancing over the weekend.... Now my top incision hurts.. especially when I cough or sneeze.. OUCH. I may have herniated it. I am so upset I really dont want to have another surgery! I mean it was a month after and I felt fine to do those things and now Ive gone and fucked myself up. *cries*
