Default Help me choose a pup!!

Ok I would love some opinions here.

As some of you will know I lost my beloved Zaine to cardiomyopathy in December. He was a great dane.

I feel ready to bring a new pup home now, it's been 5 months and I really miss having a dog around.

Getting another great dane while I'm still living at home is out of the question.

So I am going to get a small dog but I dont like fluffy dogs.

    So I am thinking:

    - pug
    - whippet
    - french bulldog

Any other really cool breeds that I should consider?

I personally like dogs with long snouts. I've always liked Greyhounds and Whippets!
Also, the short snouted dogs tend to have a particular breathing problem. My pomeranian often sounds like she's having a major asthma attack.
I was told that can be fixed somehow though.
My best friend is a pit bull fan through and through. But she fell in love with a pug last year and has since added her to the family. She now thinks alot of those dogs as well.
I don't know about french bulldogs, but the others drive me insane with all the drooling (english, I believe). I've thinking French looks similar to Pug but I'm not sure. Good luck with your tough decision.

PS I always wanted a Sheltie

I personally hate them, but my friend has two Italian greyhounds. They're smaller than regular greyhounds. Just be really careful because they have some problems with inbreeding.

Shelties and schipperkes are my favorite dogs, but they do have longer hair. They're so smart though!

What are shelties? Havent heard of that breed before.

Yeh I heard pugs have breathing and eye problems. Apparently their buldging eyes have been known to pop out

I dont mind slobber. I have owned 2 great danes. A french bulldog cant possibly have as much slobber as a dane! I used to have to clean it off our walls every time he shook his head! HAHA.

I read that the whippet is one of the soundest dogs seen by vets.

    Ah decisions.

Well, maybe narrow down a bit. Do you have time to walk a dog every day? Will it get a couple of hours exercise daily, or will it mainly be a couch dog (whippets and greyhounds are lovely dogs, but are extremely engertic. If they do not receive hours of exercise, they WILL tear apart your home and be miserable)? Do you have time to brush a dog daily (a sheltie, if not brushed regularly, will end up with matted hair, will be ugly, and can cause some health problems if the matted hair clogs its ears or gets in its food)?

By small dog, do you mean a dog you can carry around easily? Or just small compared to a great dane?

How about medical bills? As someone else mentioned, pugs are susceptible to a variety of health problems, as our some strains of bulldogs.

Try this site. It has a bunch of questions to fill out about your ideal dog, from size to coat length to trainability, and provides the best matches (it does have alot of survey stuff to fill out at the end, but you can just hit "skip" to get your results)

    http://www.selectsmart.com/DOG/

P.S. Shelties resemble small collies, like little lassies

I personally like big dogs, but people LOVE their pugs. At one time I lived with like a million pugs, none of which seemed to be housetrained, but pug-people swear up and down they're just like people, except cuter. They are cute.

My family had them growing up and they're awesome. But they do have long hair, which you may not want. In the summer they shed and you have to brush them regularly. But they're so smart, they're great with people and so sweet, they don't bark much, and they don't drool everywhere. I grew up with one in my house and I miss her terribly (she died the day before my 10th birthday).

greyhounds and whippets are awesome dogs, but they need a lot of excersize. pugs are super friendly and need less running, but they make -a lot- of noise. they snort, they drool, they snore, etc. my first dog was a sheltie (shetland sheepdog) my grandmother bred them. she was an -awesome- dog. a little on the furry side, but not "fluffy".

my current dog (the second dog i've really owned) is a 50/50 yorkie/chihuahua mix and she is the best fucking dog. she's so fun and awesome. she doesn't shed either and she doesn't "yipe". she barks like a normal dog. she weighs 7 lbs. the only down side to her is that she's not fond of strangers. she loves my close friends and family, but she's bitchy with new people.

other than that, she's the model of "big dog in a little body". i honestly think she believes she weighs 150 lbs.

btw there are "breed selectors" just search in google. a bunch of sites have quizzes you can take, which help you find the right breed of dog for you. they ask questions about your house size, how much you travel, how much time you have for walking, grooming, etc. they also ask what personality traits are important to you in a dog.

I have a long haired chihuahua that I love love love love love!

She is my best buddy and although she loves my whole family, she loves me best of all (aww). She sleeps with me every night, under the covers... LOL. She's incredibly smart. I have taught her to potty outside very easily. She can also dance ("ballerina" twirl), roll over, sit pretty with her paws up, crawl with her tummy on the floor and other fun things I taught her for entertainment... haha

She's very cuddly, but not overly so. If I don't want her on my lap, she leaves me alone and goes to her crate to sleep. She goes everywhere I go, pretty much, including overnight stays with boyfriends and friends.

She's a sweetie, did I say I love her ?? Oh and she's not yappy. I won't let her be. I scold her for yapping if she ever lets one out. Mostly, she will growl at unfamiliar sounds and she loves other dogs (my parents' dogs) and plays with my cat all the time. She likes women better than men, but warms up to anyone I let in the apartment within 5-10 minutes of them being in.

I wasn't even really a "dog person" in the first place. She really took me by surprise.

    Good luck choosing!

Have you considered a Boston Terrier? Pug/beagle xbreed (peagle?)

We have two mini-dachshunds, mom and daughter. Mom is a champion wire-hair and daughter is a smooth. Good, loving little dogs, a bit headstrong - too short to get into things over 2 ft off the ground, but prone to back problems - although we have avoided that so far. They can be yappy- ours are great watchdogs, but it's quite tolerable and they know when to be quiet. They're great small dogs. Both of them tend to lie about when they were last fed......

Wire-hair dachshunds need grooming while the shorthairs shed a little. They don't need a lot of exercise - those short little legs go a mile a minute just running around the house. We give them a few short walks a day around the property.

Best of luck in your search. I'm sure you'll find that one special doggie that is just right for you. Or as some say, that one special doggie will choose you.

Miniature Pinscher, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Rat Terrier, Toy Fox Terrier, Italian Greyhound or Chinese Cresteds are all smaller breeds with short hair. Whatever you do please don't buy from a pet shop, they tend to get their dogs from puppy mills. A good website to find a reputable breeder is www.infodog.com. Good luck in your search.

Is a Miniature Pinscher like a doberman pinscher? I like those.

Thanks I will check out the links that people have provided.

No, they are similiar color but a totally different breed. The Doberman Pinscher is a working dog while the Min Pin is a toy dog.

min pins kind of LOOK like little dobermans, but as far as behaviour and personality, they're nothing alike (they are also born with pointy ears, where dobes have naturally floppy years that are cropped to the shape you usually see)

    have you considered a mutt?

i've worked in a big veterinary referral centre, and pretty much any purebred dog that you point out to me, in my mind i add the particular medical issue that it's prone to, with very few exceptions...

i'm especially fond of mutts that may or may not have some pit bull, german shepherd, rottweiler and/or doberman in them

that being said, when and if i ever decide to go for a purebred dog it WILL be an australian cattle dog...in 5 years in practice, i've met exactly two of them...one was four or five and had eaten something he shouldn't have...the other was 16, and had been hit by a car...she needed a few surgeries, but she was just fine after that...

good point most purebreeds do have their medical problems. I do want a purebreed tho as then I know what I am getting in terms of personality more. I know each one is still individual but they do have common personality traits.

I'm even thinking of a pointer. I love their smooth coat. They are small in comparison to great danes too. I will have more danes in the future. I love the breed so much.

What a great suggestion!!! I got my (lab mix) puppy at the pound when she was 12 weeks old (she is 6 months old now) and she is the greatest dog!!! There were tons of small dogs to choose from...

PS- I love her being a puppy but I can't wait til she gets older and not so much work.
