    Umm.. I did it.

Where are you moving to? How do you plan on getting the right visas? Are you getting married? School? Have a required job?

I got here on $2k and 2 pieces of luggage. Want more and it'll cost more. I was also working within a week.

I did it (and then my dumbass came back, which I shouldn't have done). Are you going to go to school or what? That's the easiest way but it's still difficult and expensive.

    Start with .

I'm doing it...going to Melbourne next year on a student visa (most likely doing a degree program at Deakin...and of course, shaking my foreign ass in an Australian SC! ) If you want to go over as a student, then PM me, b/c I've got an assload of information on that by now. If not, I'm afraid I can't be of much help. Good luck!

Yeah, I went over as a student too, got my master's there (the whole program, not an exchange). So Pic and Windy, both of you are free to PM me for questions as to how it worked out.

After I was there for a few months, I'm tempted to do the same...now if I could only grow a sack and do it.

It was really really hard. And when I say working within a week, I should mention I had work my second day here to make my hotel that night. :/

I'm doing VERY well now, however.

I was just looking at the University of Melbourne website, looking into their Master's in International Studies. They also have an excellent Public Health program. Soooooo tempting!

A note to consider: If going for school please remember you have to pay full tuition x2 up front if not a citizen.

x2?? It's more than that for me...blah. The rate for the program I want to do is around $6000/yr for citizens, but will cost me over $17,000 for a year! The only consolation is the exchange rate...as of now that $17,000 AUD is equal to about $15,000 USD. But yeah...small consolation.

I didn't have to pay my tuition up front. I just paid at the start of every semester like I did here in the States. But I went to the only private university in Australia so the rules might be different at the government unis. It would be worth a double check though.

See, here that is considered paying upfront. Citizens are entitled to participate in a scheme called HECS (Higher Education Contribution Scheme). Not only is higher education subsidised for us, but we do not have to pay any of the portion of our costs until we are out in the workforce and earning over a certain yearly amount. At that stage, a small part of the HECS debt is garnisheed from our wages along with income tax. It is paid off over a period of years once graduates are working, generally.

I'm working on my second degree and my HECS debt is fairly massive.

I know how HECS works, but Morri was saying that Pic would have to pay two or three times the tuition amount up front. I didn't have to do that, I just paid for each semester at a time the way Americans do it. But like I said, I went to the country's only private uni, which doesn't participate in HECS or anything like that, so the rules might be a little different there.

I think there might have been a problem with the wording. Upfront fees generally means paying at the start of each Semester, not the cost of the entire degree upfront.

I was told I'd have to pay the cost of the entire degree up front unless I could prove stable income - which is hard considering on a student visa you can only work 20 hours legally per week.

Oh, okay. One of my friends (who is still a British citizen) pays by the Semester. She's a permanent resident though. Perhaps it's different if you don't have permanent residence.

If that's true... 1. I should really not go to UQ and 2. I should be able to go back to school no problem!

The rules are different for Brits and Americans, because Americans are not part of the Empire and subject to the Queen and all that. Australians and British are. So they relax the rules for each other, but not for us.

Morri, you could go to , on the Gold Coast. I got my Master's there, it's a wonderful institution, and as a private university its rules are different. I paid for my degree one semester at a time. They also run three semesters a year instead of two, so you finish faster (you get three weeks off between semesters).
