Default How much indulgence is justifiable?

There is a bidding auction for a set visit to my favourite show on Ebay right now. And I want to bid. But it's a silly amount of money for something that would...well, I don't really know how it would be. I'm sure I'd like it...but it seems like there are so many better things on which to spend my money, especially since I ought to be saving right now as much as possible. Plus I'd have to add the expense of flying myself out to L.A. if I do win it.

Also, Ebay is tricky and I have this vision of someone just jacking the auction up really high right at the end.

Is there any rule of thumb to follow when trying to decide to treat yourself? I am way too impulsive sometimes. But I really want this. Hmm. Just don't know!!

The rule of thumb is to compare how badly you want it with how well you can afford it.

Also, with eBay you need to just watch the auction and not bid on it until a few minutes before it ends. Bid before then and you're just jacking the price up. What show is it? What do they do with you on set, put you to work or walk around introducing you to people or just let you sit there and watch? How much are you willing to pay? Seems weird to pay money just to sit on set all day, but then I'm accustomed to getting paid to be there, LOL.

K has a saying - The most exciting day of your life is your first day on a movie set. The most tedious day of your life is every subsequent day on a movie set. Too true!

You're not asking the guys, are you? I mean, we're the ones popping out twenty bucks average for 3.58 minutes average to have a pretty lady pay close attention to us and make us feel like something more than society's slugs. That's a net rate of $335.20/hour, and worth every cent, I might add. Plus tips, plus drinks. So we're arguably in the upper percentile of self-indulgent.

Only you know what is worth it to you. I'd pay $15 for a shot of fine single malt, but I wouldn't pay two bucks for a Big Mac. You have to set your own value for what things are worth to you. For me, if I really wanted this, I'd balance the enjoyment of the experience and the memories that I'd carry against the current need to retain the money.

If I thought the pleasure of the experience and the memories were worth it, and I can justify the expense or make it up in good order, I'd set myself a spending limit for the value of the experience, and would justifiably (to myself) spend up to that point.

Wow, both very helpful posts. Thanks guys! (and yek, I will PM you the show and details...haha, I'm afraid of advertising the auction because I don't want to be outbid!)
