    Default Knee pain from dancing?

The last couple shifts I've been working haven't been any more strenuous than when I first started out three weeks ago, but when I take off my shoes at the end of the night, my knees KILL me. It's been almost 24 hours since I took off my shoes and my knees still hurt, but only when I put pressure on them, like walking up stairs or sitting down or standing up. I've tried stretching to make them less painful but it's not working. It's not the shoes or the way I've been dancing either... I'm not doing anything different. eh.. it's just not normal for me to be in this much pain after dancing or doing anything for that matter... I was a competitive figure skater for six years and the worst injury I had was a hyper-extended knee. So.... it this normal after dancing for awhile or am I just being paranoid and over-sensitive?

Since you do no floorwork or heavy on the knees dancing (grinding, booty bouncing moves, bodyslides) your knees shouldn't be bothering you so much.

try wearing shoes like I do, without a platform. The lover the arch the better the shoe is for you, so maybe wear a pair of kitten heels (3'' or less) the next time you work and see if there's a difference.

If it hurts on the knee cap and right above the knee when you stand from a sitting/squatting position or walk up/down stairs, and it hurts for more than a day or two you might have tendinitis. (quadriceps and/or patellar). This happened to me and I'm now having to take a month off to heal. If you don't rest the tendons and allow it heal completely it will only get worse.

Do an internet search for tendinitis, and see your doctor if your knees keep hurting. It's better to be safe than risk damaging your body.

It never hurts to go to the doctor. When I first started dancing my knees really hurt. I use to put frozen peas on my knees when I got home and some pain killers. It should not hurt that bad. Go to a dr.

the main two work related causes of knee pain for me are floor work and squatting for extended periods of time (talking to customers at low tables). but my knees are already a mess from 15 years of horseback riding.

i went through a phase where i was using icy hot on my knees every night, it made them feel better, but i don't know if it actually helped or if it just masked the problem.

i've been a lot better about the squatting and that has made a big difference. but i remember that when i started dancing it did take a little while for the stress on my knees to catch up with me. maybe a month or so. and then it got really bad for a while. and then it sort of got better, though i'm not really sure why.

anyway, knee problems can be quite serious. seeing a doctor is the best plan.
