    Dancer Websites

I'm curious about dancer websites. What I'm talking about is a website to allow a dancer to advertize her business, book business and have a bit of email. I'm not talking about a web cam site, which is another whole bag of worms.

How common is it for individual dancers to have thier own websites? For dancers who don't have thier own site but want to have one, what is the stopping factor? Is it the cost of the site? The technical difficulties of setting up a site? Or some other factor I have not though about?

I have one, but I used to build adult sites for a living, so I am a) knowledgeable about the adult site industry, b) give a shit about internet access in general, and c) give a shit about an internet fan base. Finding girls like that isn't as easy as some think.

Most dancers who have sites are the features, IMHO. It's more crucial to them. Having a website wont do a ton for house dancers... which is why MySpace and such is a great thing for them. Especially now that a lot of clubs are getting profiles there too.

Your background does make you unusual. Not just in this forum, but in society as a whole. The people who can do something more than email are in a small minority.

I think you have partially answered my question. The features are in a different group since they do have a real fan base but no home house. So that having a web site would be of significant interest to them and they would be more willing to spend the money to develop and maintain a site.

The house dancers have less of a stake in a fan base and do have a home house in which they can expect to see them. So they would be less interested in a web site. However, even there there must be some interest since you are saying that facebook is becomming popular with them. I'm sure the two reasons are it is 1 - cheap and 2 - easy to use. Do you think that personal, professional sites would be more common if the same attributes (i.e. cheap and easy) could be applied to them?

Maybe. I think the huge difference would be that sites like Facebook and MySpace are social hubs. This is usually why many people sign up to begin with. It's why I did. I saw it as a social hub and thought it would be fun, then I started to see how great of a chance it was to network and gain more of a fan base.

I think if you herded up all of the strippers on MySpace and offered them a website of their own, a lot would decline due to lack of interest. They simply want a place to interact with pals and groups and forums. They like that stuff and thats why they're here on SW as well as other sites that are similar in nature.

Don't get me wrong, you WILL find house dancers who want sites. It's becoming more "the norm" to have websites. I just don't think you'll get a metric ton of them, compared to the sheer number of them out there.

My old company used to try to sell sites to dancers. Seeing as how I worked in clubs (in non dancer roles), it was easy for me to try to sell to them. We sold basic site layouts, in three styles (with the basic bronze, silver, and gold packages), with varying colors and patterns, but the basic layouts were cookie cutter. Back then that worked well, but I'd have to say that out of every 20 dancers I pitched to, only 1-3 were interested in having a site at all (yeah we'd get a few who didn't like the layouts, but that was minimal in the reasons they declined).

Granted, this was in 1999 - 2000, so the chances of getting interested house dancers has grown quite a bit...

I think the key to getting them to hop on board is that they a) don't have to do much for the site, IE: they'd need to provide you with their info and photos for the beginning and any updates, but not do any of the actual work, and b) they'd still feel that they can have any changes made to the site when they want/if they are unhappy with how it is as the time. Think of it as catering to the lazy, even if the majority of your clients aren't really lazy folks. Strippers often have crazy schedules so the less they have to worry about it/spend time on it, the better.

It's hard to build a web site? They are teaching this now in high school and college as a required class.

And with a WYSIWG word processor like Word or Appleworks, all you have to do is make the page and save it as html. Or, if they use a PC, they could get Front Page (pause for vomit) and easily build a page.

Now, if you want complicated pages with javascript and so forth, THAT is more difficult. When I am building a page, I often have six or seven applications open at the same time, but I do not build simple pages. Well, I take that back. I build a page that is as simple as is possible for what it needs.

But a simple page with a few pictures and some text to tell a dancer's name and schedule? I think nearly anybody who can use a computer could do that.

It CAN be simple to make websites these days, but there are a metric fuckton of folks out there that, if left to their own devices, would make the most frightening and/or fugly websites on the planet for themselves. Seriously. Nothing quite kills marketing like a fugly website.

Granted, some people go overboard with it. I had one customer who would send me pages to upload to his website, and they had so many garish colors and styles, and so many different fonts that they looked like a circus poster.

I usually only use one font per site (I like Arial the best), MAYBE two, one for headings and the other for text. I'll vary the font with size and style, but only a little.

But just building a web page is not that arcane an art any more. I've taught nine and ten year old kids to do it.

There are stripper networking sites where the dancers can advertise themselves, post schedules, have email, send bulletins, etc. One is http://www.strippercommunity.com/ and the other is http://stripwatch.com/ .
