    Default hair problem!!!(section torn out/broken)

Just looking for a little advice here... MY hair is down to my ass, never been dyed, I get a lot of compliments on it. However, I've worked in teh culinary field for years, and my managers ALWAYS came down hard on me for the hair-even though short hair falls out more, and you don't look as close to see if its secured*pet peeve*

OK well basically, particularly in the past six months I've noticed that I've gotten SOOOOOOOOOOOOOo many ends broken within a few inches of my scalp, that its really thinned out one side of my head(its in teh same area, to teh left of my hairline)

It really bothers me, makes me self conscious, and I have to pin that side back so that no one notices when I dance.

Are there options for wigs or hairpieces that I could use to make it less noticable?

I'm using a Nioxxin root stimulant to try and get it to come back a little thicker and faster, though it grows quickly anyways, for so long it just kept breaking because my damn manager would tell me my french braid was too loose and insist i redo it... Any other products you can recommend?

I don't like having my head not look symmetrical, and am driven crazy to the point of almost wanting to nullify years of growth, and my one "asset" by cutting it all off to match the broken ends(which would put it at about ear level, and is NOT a style I have the confidence to pull off)

    ideas?

Start taking vitamins for your hair to cultivate new growth. I couldn't tell you what to do short term, but look for the threads about the Wal-Mart hair pills.

You need to figure out what's causing your hair to be so brittle. Heat styling? Cut it out completely (or as close to it as possible). Try switching shampoos/conditioners and see if that helps. If you don't already, start incorporating extra moisturizing hair treatments into your beauty routine. Do you clarify on a regular basis? Your hair might be the way it is because of buildup from hair products.

How is your diet? Are you eating enough protein/good fats? External beauty problems are often a sign of something amiss internally. I agree with Hatshepsut; a vitamin regimine can make a world of difference when speeding up hair growth. Good luck!

Will be going out tomorrow for the vitamins... I already take a multivitamin, and have a pretty healthy vegetarian diet... I don't believe its a dietary problem, or a brittle problem, my hair has a nice texture, and its nowhere else in the head, only in the one area from doign the same braid over and over again TIGHTLY...

Its NEVER blow dried, or heat styled. Literally just wash, wait 10 hours for it to dry, comb it, and either braid it, or just wear it down. No hair products, curling irons or straighteners, or dryers, or anyhting...

Currently, I alternate shampoos on two week rotations, i have a KMS california deep conditioner set, a Natures Gate aisan pear set, and a Garnier Nutrisse long hair set. Also, I use a vinegar rinse about once a week to remove any buildup from the shampoo's. Been doing this sort of rotation for years, and its only recently that the breakage has been noticable because of a full time culinary job/school that's put a LOT more stress on it than usual.

Does it sound like I've thought of everything?

How often do you wash? Other than that, yeah, I would say just switch up the styling to avoid extra stress on the damaged area, and get a trim (maybe some layers?) that would help it look better short term. Good luck with the vitamins!

I generally shower nightly, particularely before work... I've found that my hair gets nasty and oily if i wash it every time I shower though, so I probably only wash it every other day or so.

I'm really hoping those vitamins help... I trimmed it a bit tonight, but the legnth difference is so drastic that i don't think it actually makes a difference... I just don't want to lose my rapunzel hair because of a couple years of barely above minimum wage jobs!!!

You should try to figure out different styles to wear your hair in while at work. You could part your hair in different places each time to do the french braid. My dad was in the air force for more than 20 years so I talked to a lot of the women that he worked with over my lifetime so far. They were required to wear their hair tightly back and were always searching for new styles. Here's what was popular with them:

A french braid done around the side of the head near the ear woven into a bun

Several tight twists back along the scalp ending in a tight bun

two tight french braids coiled together at the nape of the neck into a bun and pinned

Deep conditioner can make your hair very brittle if used too often.I made that mistake a few years ago.Do you trim every other month? Its really importain to kept up on your trimming!

This might sound strange uhh cause it is but my grandmother use to put TONS of mayo in her hair than wrap her head in plastic wrap and sleep with it in her hair overnight.I guess its supose to mend spilt ends or something.

Unless it's a huge chunk, I doubt anyone but you notices, especially in club lighting.

There are so many things that go into hair growth that it's hard to say one thing works for everyone. Comfrey would stimulate growth in a way similar to the WM hair pills, but if you have a hormonal imbalance or something, it won't help. I just started taking an herbal blend designed to regulate my dopamine and estrogen and it's making my hair grow like crazy... go figure.

^ Nothing will actually mend split ends. There are products that help them blend better but that's it.

It's a pretty big chunk(probably about 1/3 of my head), I should really just take a picture... I do trim it, and go through pretty frequently dusting it(looking for split ends and cutting them out before they split further up the hair)

I'm trying to think why the mayonnaise trick would work-i've heard it before, but I don't know why... hmmm....

For now i guess I'll stick to the vitamins, and see where that takes me...

I'm not sure how often you dance, but you could try only washing your hair twice a week, or even once, unless you work somewhere smoky. Just put it up the other days. Once I started stretching the time between washings, my hair started growing more. I just rinse it out everyday and wash it after work, if it smells. It got a little oily at first, but then I guess my scalp got used to it.

Also, would one of those soft fabric hairbands (the kind that's a large, flat loop) to pull back the front of your hair work? I don't know culinary rules, but at least you could stop having to braid the front as tightly.
