Default have anyone stay at a hostel while traveling for work?

Have any of you stayed at a hostel while traveling for work? I found the organization called Hostelling International that supposedly has pretty high standards of quality of rooms and service and becoming a member gives you some benefits. I am just interested to know if any of you have ever done that and felt comfortable staying in a hostel while on a work trip, or would it be too much to worry about for a traveling dancer, i.e. privacy issues (having to lie about why you are in the city, coming back to the room from work yearly in the morning, having to hide your stripper clothes and shoes etc.). Or would staying in a hostel for a few days while checking out the clubs and going to auditions be a good option, and AFTER getting hired you'd move to a hotel that is close to the club you'd be working for? I specifially want to go to Chicago. What's your opinion?

I often stay in hostels when I travel. I find it works quite well with working too. By the time I get back from work in the morning, everyone else is getting up to go out sight seeing for the day, so getting undisturbed rest is no problem most of the time.
I dont hide what I do, but it wouldnt be so hard to do anyway if you wernt comfortable with people knowing.

I just booked a load of hostels for my trip to the UK. I joined Hostelling International because some hostels require you to be a member. You can sign up at the hostel, but since I now have a USA HI membership....I simply get stamped or something. Eh, for $30 I don't really care if I end up using it:p
HI IS more picky about the establishments.

    Have a safe trip!!

I always book hostels when I travel away from home for work (unless dancer accommodation is already included by the club). I stay in a female only dorm all the time... I dunno. I like having access to a kitchen so then I can cook my own meals instead of eating out all the time ... plus as APS has said, the majority of the time by the time I hit the sack everyone else in my dorm room has left.

If I do have a snore-er in my dorm, easy solution is ear plugs. They do work

Plus most hostels have free breakfast so I usually have the breakfast before I go to bed. I havn't had a bad experience really with hostels.

Just keep in mind that some hostels have a curfew, so you could be shut out from, say, 12AM-7AM. Also, some hostels in the US are shitty, even HI-affiliated ones. But some are very, very nice... much nicer than local motels, and a lot more fun. I'm sure there's a discussion forum out there somewhere abotu hostel experiences, or a hostel review site. But even if a hostel sucks, you're only out $20 for the night. Not so bad.

All the hostels I have ever stayed within here in Australia .. if they didn't have a 24hr reception.. at least gave you a key or passcode so you could get in/out at any time of day and/or night (no curfew). Most of the time I try to stick with hostels that have a 24hr reception tho'

I wouldn't if travelling to dance. First of all, I would not want to share a room with strangers that could potentially go through my dance gear. Then, you would need to sleep with the cash physically strapped onto you. Finally, too many questions and looks. An inexpensive hotel would be better, or perhaps dancer housing if they have it?

I was thinking I could stay at a hostel for 2-3 nights while I get familiarized with the city and going to auditions, meanwhile checking out the hotels, banks, post offices, gym, grocery stores, restaurants located near the clubs and the hotels that are close by so that after I know which club I want to work at I can move to a hotel that is near the club (a couple of clubs I am interested are 18 miles apart). This way I wouldn't have to spend time next day after work running around looking for a bank or a place to eat. I'd alreasdy know where to go and save time and energy for work. On the other hand, moving from a hostel to a hotel will take time and money. Maybe I should really find an extended stay place for a week instead.

Okay, I'm going to be the one to ask. What's the difference between a hostel and motels/hotels?

A hostel is a place where you share a room with a few other people of the same sex.

They do have lockers in the rooms of all the hostels I have ever stayed within and I've stayed within quite a few... I've had absolutely no problems with safety of my dancer gear as well as cash. You are too paranoid and obviously have not stayed in a decent hostel.

Granted, my experience of hostels is restricted to Australia.

Plus I usually bank the money asap if possible.

If one is really concerned about people taking their money, literally sleep upon it.. have it under your pillow when you go to sleep and bank it as soon as you can do so.

Some of the ATMs here in Australia (I know a few NAB ATMs do so) allow you to deposit money into your bank account within them thus ensuring your money is 'safe'. Granted, the money isn't processed until the next business day (if deposited Fri, Sat, Sun it won't be processed til Tues).

I agree to disagree with your statement/post.

I prefer inexpensive motels. I live in Australia. I've stayed in Australian hostels. Maybe I'm just conditioned to a higher class of living, but I prefer my hotel/motel any day. I cannot STAND sharing toilets or showers or anything. Yeah I get a stove, but I also get my own fridge and micro should I stay alone. Pffft... and hotels aren't THAT much more... and if you're stripping, you should be able to afford it.

    Ditto what GoldCoastGirl said.

Hostels tend to have lockers and safes where you can keep valubles. ive never had any problems from people in hostel because Im a dancer either.

    I disagree.

A female only dorm is usually classed as a small dorm thus $26-28 per night or $156-168 per week.

    http://www.bookmelbourne.com.au/availabilitySummary.jsp
The cheapest quoted price is $65 per night and no weekly rate.

A difference of $37 per night or $287 per week.

The hotel and hostel are located on the exact same street and not too far from each other. I'm purely comparing per night and weekly room rates.

As for "being able to afford a hotel room" .. I prefer to keep my expenses low (and thus easily able to make a decent profit each trip) and don't mind hostels. I find hotels/motels boring and unpleasant ... I like the hustle bustle (aka "personality" as such) of hostels whilst still being able to keep my privacy.

I really don't think it's a good idea. I stay in motels when I travel, and I actually try to stay in large ones. I don't think that I look super strippery, but I guess I must because when my cousin and I travel, we always get the "those girls are up to bad things" looks. Or maybe it's just because two attractive girls get a lot of attention anywway. Plus, you're always coming home late at night, and it's just sort of obvious you are "up to something." I've been creeped out by the advances of hotel staff members before to the point of pushing furniture up against the door while I slept.... I can only imagine the situation would be MUCH MUCH MUCH worse in a hostile. And Katrine is right, lockers or not, your shit isn't safe there. It doesn't take much to break into a little locker like that.

If you're not going to make back the 40-50 bucks a night you spend on a cheap hotel, it's not worth traveling any way you know? Also, have you considered traveling with a friend to cut expenses.

EDIT -- I just confirmed this info and found out that the $29 is for a female dorm room. So yeah, you would have to probably strap your cash to your body or hide it really well or something. To sleep in a room by yourself it's $64, so that's pretty expensive, but the hostel is nice.

If you decide to stay in a hostel, I would recommend The Arlington House International Hostel. I stayed there in the summer of 2005 and it was really nice. It's walking distance to Lake Michigan and in an upscale neighborhood with really cool townhomes everywhere. There is no lockout or curfew or anything. They expect you to come home late at night, and there are a lot of travelers who do that, so it wouldn't be weird if you came home with a stripper bag. When I stayed there, there were people going in and out all the time. You wouldn't even be noticed. Also, you can get a room to yourself and you have a lock to your room. I wouldn't worry too much about someone breaking in unless you mention that are you are a dancer. Just keep to yourself, be friendly and you'll be fine. You have to show an ID with an address that is 50 miles away from the city to stay there. It's a city law. I felt totally safe when I stayed there. It's in the Arlington Heights neighborhood. A female dorm to yourself is $29 tax included. I really don't think that if you came home from a night of stripping anyone would give you shit. There is a 24-hour reception desk. I really enjoyed this hostel. Keep us updated to what you do. (If I decided to travel to Chicago to dance, I would stay here.) Their phone number is 1-800-467-8355 if you have any other questions.

How do you find one of these around the US? I think I'll give it a try. I hate spending $60/70 just to sleep in a room for 5 hours. I don't need more rest than that and I never even turn on the tv or use room service.

^^ That is Hostelling International's main site.

You can also Google hostels by city, or so I'd imagine. There are some very nice hostels not affiliated with HI (Arnott's in Hilo, HI, Whatever-It's-Called-Hostel in Crested Butte, CO, for example). Or maybe those are affiliated. There's also a nice one in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and another in Brunswick, GA. Sorry, now I'm just rambling. Have fun and be safe. Hosteling has provided me with some of the best memories of my travels, but I've also run into a handful of sketchy situations.

Yeah same. There are hostels in Sydney for as little as $70 a week that arent bad to stay in. I dont like paying excess amounts of money when all Im doing is sleeping and showering in a place.
If I feel the need for privacy and my own bathroom etc Ill try one of two options - get a room in a hostel for about $40 a night, or befriend the hostel staff who provided the hostel isnt booked out will often just let you have a dorm with no one else in it for dorm prices. Sometimes it comes down to luck, but Ive had this happen more than a few times on my travels.
For me hotels are something I do with a lover or when Im on a non-working holiday.

I do think its worth investing in some secure luggage though if you are staying in a hostel just incase.

I prefer hotels because I don't like sharing my shower or my toilet or anything. I like my personal space.. and my personal space is worth more than my lunch allowance.

She'll be good if she buys a diversion safe. You know the ones that are Waterbottles/pop cans but they are really safes that you can hold money and valuables in.

If youre going to a new town / club you dont nessesarilly know how much budget youre going to have. Ive seen plenty of dancer make the mistake of booking a hotel and then not making very good money.

Another senario is that if youre staying for 2,3 or 4 weeks for instance rather than a few days and especially if youre not working every night then, $65+ a night for accom only adds up to be quite a bit, which if saved instead could go towards much more exciting things.

True... but I kinda always make sure to have enough in savings before I run out and go somewhere hoping to make money. I paid all my hotel up front in cash when I got to Adelaide. I had the money ON me. And really.. it's a bit silly to be travelling without enough money for at least a week of living and a way home if all blows up.

I've stayed in many hostels in Europe and am familiar with the one here in Austin. Our experiences are different. When I danced, I really yearned for privacy before and after work so I could get "psyched" for the event. I needed time and space to prepare shaving, hair, heavy makeup, etc.

At night, when I came home exhausted, I wanted to have my own bath, put on my self-tanner, be naked while it dried, and have a quiet, dark room to sleep in. Then I'd want to sleep all day, as it would be pretty late.

Sharing a dorm with lots of travelling non-dancers really makes that difficult.

But, I would totally stay in one whilst travelling, just not on the nights that I work.
