    Default seriously rebellious hair

i've got naturally vaguely wavy hair - some days it's got a definite wave to it, some days it's nearly dead straight...most of the time i just go with it, but every once in awhile, i'd like to make it do something other than what it's doing naturally...i know that part of the issue is that i've got relatively coarse hair, but this is getting ridiculous

i've tried all kinds of different products, but no matter what i do, my hair undoes in 15 minutes or less...i've held it wrapped around a curling iron until i could smell it starting to cook, let it cool before i unwound it, and 15 minutes later, it's straight again...to straighten it, i've tried heat while it's dry, heat while it's damp, steam, everything...and it just doesn't hold...

    help?

Have u tried a GHD straighter? They are really a lot better than the normal ones. They cost about $300AU but are worth it IMO.

Also have a hairdresser thin out your hair might help a bit.

Talk to your hairdresser about it they might be able to suggest a style that's easier to manage.

What kind of irons are you using?

I too have very coarse hair that will do what it wants, but I found if I use a good quality iron, I can MAKE it do what I want.

I typically straighten my hair. I use a setting lotion regardless of the style I do, but then I divide my hair into six sections, and using a good ceramic iron (it was expensive, but my hair looked so good, I made much more money at work, so it paid for itself) and straighten half-inch pieces at a time. When I'm done, I hairspray a brush (right ont he bristles) then brush out my hair. Even through extreme humidity with this, my hair stays perfectly in place.

For curly hair I do the same, except I spray the half-inch section with extreme hold spray before and after I curl it, then spray the heck out of it when I'm done.

Well..coarse hair. Wash and then condition your hair REALLY, REALLY well. While your hair is still wet, apply a silicone based serum. DO NOT spray anything on your hair that has moisture in it. DO NOT use any so-called flat iron creams, anti frizz creams, or anything after you have put the serum in. definately use a paddle brush to get the serum through and detangle your hair. Then blowdry it.

After you blowdry, section it off and make sure it is thouroughly dry. Not bone dry, but no tangible wetness to it.

Then, section your hair off and apply more serum to it as you go along. Don't get too much of the serum on your roots though, and concentrate it on your last 6 inches of ends. Flat iron as small of sections that you can manage. Wherever your hair is the most unruly, make those sections TINY. Always make sure the plates are in even contact with your hair.

After you flat iron, blast your head with the blowdryer on cool, or stand in front of a fan. Not an A/C because a/c's blast out moisture which will eventually make ur hair revert.

I really don't think the type of iron matters. You could use a marcel iron, a $500 Corioliss or something from Sally Beauty.

The flat iron I use comes from Sally, it was $40 and the best thing in the world. Of course I have a Chi, too...just because I used to be a label whore. I think the best irons I've ever had were the lil $60 BabyBliss iron I got in my cosmetology school pack and the one from Sallys.

All that matters is that your iron is clean, and the surface is smooth and conducts heat evenly. That whole ionic thing I am still up in the air about, but if you wanna spend money for negative ions, get a blowdryer that is ionic instead of the flat iron.

Whatever you do...don't defeat the purpose of ironing your hair by spraying it with hairspray, smoothing some Garnier "Smoothing Milk" or anything into it after it's straight. Moisture will cause your hair to revert, and unless you have very straight very fine fly away hair ... all those things are gonna do is make you gradually puff up.

I'm Moroccan. Which is North African. While our hair isn't typically the same as Black Americans...it's basically the same as really super thick unruly curly hair of a bi-racial person. So trust me, I know how to work a flat iron, pressing comb, give a good blow out and more. When I straighten my hair, I often get mistaken for some kind of Pacific Asian, cuz it is so straight, so silky, and my natural hair is jet black and it just blings and swings.

I have really coarse thick wavy hair and I prefer to wear it straight. I use a Solia straightening iron. Check out Folica.com for different ones. The Sedu also worked well for me. The other alternative if your hair is color free and healthy is the Japanese straightening. You have to get that done by a professional and it's very expensive. If my hair wasn't damaged I would do that.

I have coarse, wavy hair. While it's wet I put in quite a bit of Paul Mitchell Wax Works (or Goldwell pomade) and some extra hold gel, or lots of volumizing gel. My hair is not silky smooth, but it will never be silky smooth. At least this way it looks all thick and curly and it does feel a little bit softer. A little wax (like bumble and bumble) on the ends. Some days I just spray in a ton of oil sheen and embrace the bigness.

DO NOT have a hairdesser thin your hair. I have very thick, curly, coarse hair as well and thinning is the DEVIL for people like us. It looks fine for about a week before all the little "thinned" hairs start popping up everywhere. They are completely impossible for people who already have unmanageable hair.

Personally, I swear by my hot rollers. I love those things and they are amazing, and they don't leave your hair coarse and "crispy" like some heat styling elements do.

Also, your hair could be every more unruly because it may be fried. If you're a hair dye addict and you "held it wrapped around a curling iron until i could smell it starting to cook", you're hair could very well be unhealthy enough that it won't do anything.

Mine used to be that same way. It took me two years to get it healthy again. I had to chop my mid-back length hair to between my shoulders and my chin and then grow it back out, it's been five years since I chopped it all off and it's just now getting back to that length. I do have to say, It's about a billion times softer and more manageable now.

^^^^ You are very right about the damage.

You might wanna try a protein treatment. Light protein like Motions CPR or maybe even a reconstructer like Aphogee or a placenta mask.
