    Default (rant) I am unemployable!

Sorry guys, but I need to rant.

I graduated from school in May. I worked my butt off to have two majors (English and Communications), and I finished with honors and a 3.5 GPA. I've had two internships as well...I worked really hard, and I thought when I graduated, it wouldn't me too bad to find a job. And it's pretty varied what I'm looking for. Becaus eof the two majors, there's a lot I could do...event planning, PR, marketing, editorial work.

But, alas, apparantly I am unemployable. As of this hour, I have sent out 64 resumes, and nothing. Wait, no, someone did call me for an interview, but they didn't leave the company name...and when I called the number back...the number was "no longer available".

    *pulls hair out*

any support or commiseration is appreciated.

I'd recommend trying smaller PR firms, which are always seeking attractive and personable young women. For instance, I know a guy in Chicago whose office always has a rotating crew of recent grads and reminds me of "Charlie's Angels."

If you are not getting interviews from the resumes you send then you will probably want to reassess the resume. Perhaps have someone with experience in this are take a look at it for you.

Also, Once you submit the resume how do you follow up?

Does your school have an employment centre or a "Backpack to Briefcase" (That's what it's called where I live) program that you could take advantage of for employment listings especially for new grads?

Also you could take your resume to them and they could help you tweak it to make it more attractive to employers.

Or consider hiring a headhunter. There are people that you can hire to find a job for you. They work with alot of companies, so often they get the first word that there is something available and may be able to find you something that will fit you. It's worth a try. I know when they line up the job, you have to pay a fee, but it might be worth it.

When you have general skills, and not much experience yet, one of the things that really helps is to customize a resume for each company, at least a cover letter. I'm not saying lie, but when I first when job hunting I received 100% responses by including a cover letter with a paragraph explaining why I wanted to work the specific company to which I was applying, as well as a paragraph explaining my enthusiasm and related personal experience (i.e., work relative to my field that I had for free, volunteer, or profit on the side). Basically companies get a zillion resumes. Those that stand out are the ones from candidates that show a lot of personal interest in the company, and in their career.

Don't give up, you'll find something, you are FAR from unemployable.

Where do you live and what careers are you open to? PM me, I might be able to help you.

Honey this is normal for new grads. This is why so many of us stick with it after graduation. Start with your school's career centre, and I do know a lot (well, several) people who wound up with good starts through agencies. Sending out resumes is good, but it can take literally years to land something that way, especially if you are applying to larger companies for entry level positions.

These things take time you will have a job first then you can work on getting a better job and this cycle just repeats itself until you find the job that fits you . It took me about 4 different jobs before I found one that lasted 17yrs until I started to hate that job .

Unemployable here too! I have a double B.A. with honors, a master's degree with highest honors, and three years of experience in my field. And I'm getting rejected for everything in the world too. Unfortunately the ONLY two things I'm good at - writing and directing - are ridiculously hard to break into as careers. I don't have anything helpful to suggest, but if it makes you feel any better, my hair is falling out too.

I have two BAs, but the one that has been the most beneficial in the real world is my breast augmentation.

This is normal for some college grads , but it shouldn't be this hard !!!!!!!------
In our world "It is who you know, not what you know when it comes to getting a good job!"

Too many people who graduate think just becasuse they earned a degree they should have a great job.
Your inter personal skills and relationships that you make are of FAR GREATER IMPORTANCE than any Diploma!
However, once you get the job you have to be qualified and good enough to keep it so yes the diploma is important!

All I can add is my kids had no trouble getting jobs in their respective engineering careers starting with their first year of college. And I've spent a lot of time looking through resumes. I throw out most as '...just another resume...' Sit down with someone in the field you are applying for. Sell them. Rewrite your resume and cover letter until it gets their attention. Beg them to be honest with you. There are just so many newbs coming out of college who stand out not at all as compared with their peers. The resume and cover letter is your chance to make a first impression that will get your foot in the door, or to be ignored along with so many other resumes. Enthusiasm matters. Enthusiasm for the company you are applying to. Enthusiasm for your career. And one thing that helps more then anything else, if you can show a history of doing volunteer work, personal projects, something extra in school, whatever that ties in with your career. Most important to any company is if they are going to take a chance on you, that you have enthusiasm, and love your career so much that you've been engaging in it at every opportunity all along. That's what separates the exceptional candidates from the majority.

i don't know what part of the country (or what country) you're in, but craigslist is often excellent for getting actual jobs that pay well and it is pretty easy to negotiate a nice salary or hourly, depending on the type of work.

at the very least, craigslist usually gives a good overview of what industries people are trying to staff in your area and also a lot of temp agencies use it, so it is an easy way to get temp assignments without having to hunt down the agencies individually.

i would be damned surprised if you sent out 64 resumes through craigslist for your area and got no interviews.

I've come a long way since I believed in anything, and I've come half way around the world.

Also, consider the fact that you've been graduated what must be less than a month--along with all the other thousands upon thousands of graduates across the country. So there's a lot of competition out there, and since the economy is fairly slow, companies are somewhat slow on hiring. In other words, if it's been less than a month, believe me, that is absolutely typical. Chances are you'll be looking most of the summer.

Get some advice on tweaking your resume, and also hit Barnes & Noble and look at their resume-fixing books. (The nice thing about B&N is that you can spend all day in their comfy chairs and A/C READING the books, without them pressuring you to buy them.) Put your resume up on Monster and Careerbuilder, and don't be afraid to look at relocating. Sometimes a market will be hot in one area of the country, and saturated everywhere else.

    ^^^^^^

is absolutely right, there are thousands of people in your exact same position. Heck I went through the same thing, becuase I needed a job, I got work at a call center, they moved, went to another call center, 4 years later and 6 promotions later I'm incharge of Marketing (I also went for PR/Communications).

It may not happen the ideal way, but, you'll get thru this rough bit of road...

Put your resume out in several place, try monster.com and jobdango.com and your local state employment office. I was laid off recently, and when I finally got a killer resume together, I started getting calls from people who wanted me to come and apply!! And I'm switching careers rather abruptly, and I'm still getting the calls.

Did your internships go well? Have you kept in touch with people from the companies that you interned at? Even if you haven't kept in touch with them if your internships went well then try to get in touch with some of the people you worked with. Resumes and cover letters are important but often it just comes down to networking and knowing or meeting the right people.
