    Default Making/selling Costumes?

OK so I need some new outfits, and went looking at local stores today. I really balked at some of the prices, and didn't see anything that looked like my style... so HEY I'm talented, I can sew really well, design patterns, etc. I do that anyways... I should be making my OWN costumes...

It made me wonder though if it would be worth it to try making costumes to sell to other dancers... I have already developed my own sort of embellishment styles on backpacks, dresses and pants, etc. for family. Usually involving fabric painting, embroidery, and beading... If I embellish a piece of clothing I didn't actually SEW myself, am I allowed to resell it?

I guess just trying to figure out the sort of effort that would be involved in this... any help from anyone would be great!

I'm fairly certain you can resell things you embellish.. otherwise ebay would be out some pretty nifty designers.

But IMO, nobody knows the value of handmade clothing anymore so you're likely not to get paid well.

Not yet, Lena... But i think i have the potential to be one...

Thanks, Lillith... I've sold things I've made in teh past, and yeah, its a bitch getting people to buy things that i've put hours into making, because they ARE more expensive...

Yea I think it would be worth it for sure! If you have the skills use them - plus though I'm sure you love dancing just as I do/did - you can't do it forever and this could be a great start for a second "post dancing" career! If I were you, slowly but surely start designing a variety of costumes/dancer clothes, build a website and sell them both at your club and online. Make some business cards and pass them out! Good luck!

You never know until you try it, you just have to start and see what happens. If you're not getting what you want out of it for the time and effort then you can just stop.

As for buying premade garments and putting on embellishments, it's just something you'll have to see if people are interested in. I don't see why it would be a problem, infact a lot of companies do it. Just like a logo tee, a lot of the time they purchase premade garments and print (etc.) onto them.

Thanks... it was fun talking in chat tonight...

I was kinda going through and making a list of things that would help to do this more... there's design software that could be fun, but thats over 100$ so for the moment, I think my own pattern design skills are adequate... need to get a roll of paper, for cutting patterns out of... I'm already sort of mathematically dissecting the seam allowances I usually leave(hehe) and sketching out some templates of some stuff...

Gawd, sometimes I hate beign such a detail oriented nut... still, its sortof fun... its gonna be scary when I get online and start pricing fabrics! Maybe sometime i'll either get brave and buy my own sewing machine, or the boyfriend will be in a frame of mind where i can ask to borrow his...(It was his late wifes, and its coming up on the anniversary of her death, he's already on edge, so it would be kind of disrespectful, i think, to "lay claim" to something of hers with all the mental shit he's still goign through from her death)

Hehehe, oh well... yay for technical specs in the notebook.
