    Default Neti pot

Anyone used a neti pot for allergies or sinusitis?

Saw it on Oprah, apparently it can be more effective at cleaning out the sinuses than medications.

What is a reasonable price to pay for one?

Never used one, but I've heard about them somewhere else besides Oprah. I guess they're pretty popular?

I had wondered about this, though, after I saw them use it on Oprah. It's so weird looking!

I know. I'm looking them up now but there are lots of mixed reports about their effectiveness. I'm willing to try anything to clear up my sinuses tho.

    You can find them here:

I find this company to be great: high quality, excellent customer service. They are big on educating about alternative healing therapies.

    Thanks ladies.
Well as I said anything is worth a try. I am using a nasal spray that apparently has steroid in it so I dont want to keep using it for a long period of time. I have had chronic sinus infections for the past couple of years, I'm desperate.

Yeah I just bought a netti pot about a month ago to help get over a sinus infection. It takes a little getting used to but it does help. You blow out tons of boogies, feel relieved for 10/15 min or so (depending on how bad you are) but then, yes you do get stuffy again. But like it was said earlier, it basically helps with shortening the duration of whatever it is you're going through. So I would def suggest it. I've also heard that its good to use instead of using allergy nasal sprays all the time. That if you rinse out your sinuses daily with the netti pot instead, you will suffer less from the allergies. (not sure if it works but i've heard it)

I've been using one for a year and love it. I don't have as many problems with allergies or colds. Also, you can really smell things better and food tasted better because of that. I've noticed a big difference when I go a few days without doing it. The key thing to remeber is that you're just rinsing - not trying to power wash. One pot per nostril is plenty. You can use salt, but I like sinucleanse. It's a commercial premeasured mix of salt and something else, but ground really fine so it dissolves better. That is a good thing.

It feels mildly weird the first few times, but not unpleasant. The biggest thing is getting your head wrapped around the idea of pouring water through your nose. Through a little trial and error, you'll find the right angle to tilt your head to get the water in one nostril and out the othher instead of going anywhere else.

I found that it also seemed help reduce the puffiness under my eyes for some reason as well - maybe it's a sinus thing..?

PM me if you'd like more info.

Neti pots can be good. Just don't use water that is too cold or with not enough salt in it, it'll hurt badly!
Although the neti pot works wonders for many people, I personally had a better experience with a sinus irrigator.

While a neti pot is good, it just didn't blast as much water and snot out like this does. Although the irrigator is expensive, I consider it worthwhile if you want your sinuses really cleaned out.
The neti pot I have cost about 12$ at the local hippy store. I use it when I can't use the irrigator, and I typically do it at night before going to bed. It helps me sleep, and for a shorter period of time too!

My doctor gave me a syringe (without the needle) and said to make a saline solution with warm water and shoot the water up the nose. I found this gave me a lot of relief but the neti pot sounds better.

Also is it easy to do it like it was done on oprah? How u pour it through one nostril and the water runs out the other nostril?
Because when I used the syringe I could not get it to work like this. Perhaps it's easier with the net pot?

I have had lots and lots of sinus infections. My doctor gave me the nasal spray that is a steroid and it didnt help me at all. Actually, my body became addicted to it and it was a bitch to get off of. Then I tried over the counter saline rinse, that helped some...but not enough. I went to go see an allergist and he gave me Neil Med Sinus Rinse kit. I love it!!....it has helped me so much. I might check out the neti pot, just to see which works the best.

    ^^
Same here I was given anti-biotics 5 times last year to clear up sinus infections that got so bad that not even nasal spray cleared them up.
I dont want to have to live on medication for this.

My doctor said the next step is a CT scan and sinus draining. But I have heard that even the draining doesn't last that long and it is apparently painful.

I am getting rhinoplasty later this year and that might help if my sinusitis is caused by structural abnormalities within my nose.

But in the mean time I am going to try the neti pot out. I have bid on one on ebay!

i do nasal irrigation all the time. i don't have a neti pot though, i just use a plastic cup which i squeeze into a pouring shape.

it does the exact same thing. takes some practise, but it's worth it.

on the "is the neti pot easier" thing... i -have- used one and i don't think it's too much easier than a cup or syringe. i think the ease comes from knowing how exactly to tilt your head (diagonal and downward) and how to breathe during the process (very slowly and -consistently- through your mouth).

a cup -is- a bit messier at first though. i did it in the shower till i got good at it.

I got a "beginner's" kind of set at Whole Foods. It's a plastic neti pot and comes with about 20 packets of salt to mix in with the water. Cost me about $12. I used it twice a day at my parents' house. (House I grew up in that I'm now horribly allergic to). With some zyrtec, I was able to breathe and keep the sniffles away. Usually, I have to use zyrtec, benadryl, sudafed and prednisone to survive the week.

Oh, thank you! My allergies have been a b*tch lately, it's been so hot & dry here. I use benadryl (sometimes & only @ night) also Alavert (for day). I also take lots of Vit.C & garlic caps. I definately need something else. I'm going to check that out, I'll be going to WF in the next day or so.

For those that have used it, can you use a regular tea pot for this?

I kinda collect mini tea pots (asian style), and I know some of them are about the same shape and size of this thing. I looked at my local "hippy" stores today and the 2 stores that had them were hella expensive for just a ceremic pot, lol. (It's funny that I am so cheap and make the amount of money I do, rofl!) The one at the "head shop" was listed at $25, and the one at the organic shop was $32.

I just checked and my largest mini tea pot holds right at 8oz, is it ok to try with that? I watched the video and saw how they did it, slowly pout warm salt water into one side and let it run out then same thing on the other side right? Then blow out excess, then do the exercises correct?

I have chronic sinus problems, will this really make a difference? Currently I take 2 benedryl daily along with 180mgs of Allegra.
