Thumbs down help with an angry, loud cat

my orange tabby cat is really getting on everyone's nerves. please help.

my cat, Nosey (his name), is 17 years old (yes, 17) and he's just as energetic as a cat half his age. he's declawed in the front. i moved recently to a townhouse and have decided to keep him strictly indoors for his own good. he was previously an indoor/outdoor cat when i lived in condos and he got into fights all the time. yet he's still very healthy. i sleep on a loft bed and he climbs up the ladder to sleep with me.

he hasn't taken to living strictly indoors very well. for one thing, his meow is obnoxious. it's loud and echoes off of the walls. he does it to let me know he wants to go outside. that's out of the question, as keeping him inside keeps him safe, no matter how young he thinks he is. the problem is that he meows, meows, and meows, pouting. recently he started to let me know how angry he is by attacking me with his paws and teeth. i'm not sure if he was just playing or not. occasionally he's left a few unwanted gifts outside of his litter box (not because he's sick). when he's not meowing, he's following me around and being a general pain in the ass. a friend spent the night and had a hard time staying asleep because nosey was so loud.

what can be done to stop his obnoxious behavior? ignoring it isn't easy...

i've attached a few photos of the little pest...

Hmmm... is he fixed? If he's not, that might explain it.

If he is, he may need limited and supervised outdoor trips because he's so old that they're ingrained in him. I don't know how you go about supervising a cat outside though.

Im going through the same thing with my kitty right now. Do you have a screened in patio or something like that? Even opening the window and letting my cat sit in front of it helps with him feeling pent up.

about the only way i've ever successfully supervised a cat outside has been with a harness and leash, and to look at him you would have thought he was being murdered...

i'm going to assume that being declawed, he is also neutered, but it may be that he's used to being the alpha male where you used to live, and there's maybe another cat around that he can smell/hear/see and wants to challenge...if he's been for a check up and he's healthy, you might want to find out if there are any outdoor cats nearby, and see if you can keep them away from your doors and windows...

    nosey is neutered.

there are indeed other cats around that he'd get into fights with. one gray tabby explored our back patio and nosey hissed and made the "cat fight" meow through the window. i've talked with the neighbors and they agreed that he'd get creamed if let outside. i'll think about the supervised outdoor visits on the harness and leash. he LOATHES the harness and leash so i doubt that to him it's worth going outside if he's going to be on one.

Have u considered an indoor-outdoor cat enclosure. I just did a search to try to find the thing I am talking about. Ill post it later if i find it.

They are basically enclosures that u attach to your house eg to a window or catdoor and the cat can go "outside" as it pleases but it's still in the enclosure.

    ^ *laughs*. that's certainly a creative solution. i haven't seen those before. i'll ask nosey's co-owner what she thinks.

aside from duct tape, what's a way to get a cat to shut up?

When he howls, cut him off immediately with a loud hiss. Glare at him, wide-eyed and firm, and don't move or blink. Stare into his eyes until he looks away. Once he looks away, go on about your business. If he howls again, do it again. Whatever you do, DON'T look away first. This is a power play. Right now he sees you as sharing HIS territory, and it needs to be the other way around. Cats will always set up a hierarchy but YOU need to be on top of it.

If he gives you any shit, like looking at you and yelling, growl at him. You know what a cat growl sounds like, so mimic it. He needs to understand that this is YOUR house and you don't want to hear all this howling. Don't pet him while he's doing it.

If he tries to bite you or scratch you again, whap him on the nose and hiss. Might seem mean, but that's what cats do to each other and it's the language he understands. Don't hit him too hard but make sure it's firm and conveys the message. Again, this is a power thing.

Good luck! My cat is about the same age as yours and he's a loudmouthed pain in the ass too, but nowhere near as bad as he used to be. We relax and cuddle now and he knows full well when he needs to shut up because all I have to do now is shoot him a look.

    ^^ yep..what Yek said.

Also...carry a squirt bottle or a can of hard beans around. When he hisses or yowels squirt him or shake the can really loud.

And just realize that he's a grumpy old man who wants to complain..esp since his world jusrt turned upside down.....so be patient with him!

Was going to say this. The squirt bottle works wonders and after awhile all you have to do is show it to them and they stop it.

thanks! on a side note, due to his bad behavior, we've started calling him Noisy. he responds to it, too. we'll try taking him for walks. the hissing seems to get his attention, too.

    i'll keep everyone updated.
