A friend of mine who was in Iraq for 10 years during the first gulf war told me that a Sorority sent in pictures and their panties. I don't know if that's true or not but he said all the guys really liked it, it got their mind off their situation for a while

Important Related Info- is anyone else getting "carefully worded" Myspace messages from their service personnel stationed overseas? I read that the military was going to ban Myspace from their servers, but now it looks like they are closely monitoring outgoing messages instead. FYI.

I think its so no information gets leaked.

Like someone videotaping a hello to there family and puts it on myspace and then there was a little statue in the background and somebody sees the statue and knows where certain people are stationed etc etc

I only heard about it a la Daily Show and what kind of source is that, so, I really have no idea.

It's not so much messages being monitored as it is blogs. Myspace blogs, livejournal, all that stuff......personal messages aren't very high risk, considering the soldiers know who's reading them (hopefully, ha)......but yes, certain wording will be more careful....but you can "google earth" the area that my cousin's men are tearing around; essentially they're supposed to avoid dates and specific locations. My cousin says that it's not as bad as the media is making it sound....he just "can't blow their cover before he knows that CNN is doing it anyway" (verbatim, hahaha!)

the military has blocked myspace from its own computers and from computers using their internet/intranet networks. personal computers that soldiers own can still access myspace and other sites (as long as their isp allows it-in iraq, that means no porn sites)

this is not so much a huge change as the media has let it on to be... gov computers have always had limited access to non gov sites, meaning that they could get to myspace, but couldn't type anything or click on it anyway, so there's not a big deal if they can't go to the site period. the military comps and networks are for sending emails and info over a secure network so that the info doesnt get leaked. for example, if a soldier wanted to send a report of an incident to someone higher up, they would send it via AKO on a military computer to ensure that its not intercepted by media or enemies.

the military does have the right to monitor the soldiers blogs, journals, etc. but as long as their not posting classified or sensitive information, then there isn't an issue. besides there's a lot of soldiers out there and reading each and every one of their blogs, letters, personal messages, emails, journals, etc takes more time than its really worth. pretty much , there's key words that they search for and if they dont pop up, then theres no further investigation.

but soldiers using non military comps are not restricted from myspace as the fucking media would make it out to be. most of the time, when it comes to the military the media has it wrong or is blowing shit out of proportion. so unless its coming STRAIGHT from the military, don't believe it. when the news says that x many soldiers died at x location, more than half the time its wrong. which is why they encourage the families NOT to watch the news, it causes us to freak out unnecessarily.

PS-there's some kind of scam goign on where someone will call a military wife/family member saying that they are from the red cross and that their soldier has been injured and that before they can help them they need to verify SSN and other info. don't fall for it.
the red cross will never call you to tell you your soldier is injured or worse. they will only contact you in response to you contacting them first in an effort to let important news get to your deployed soldier (like if you or a fam member is seriously injured or ill).
if someoen does call you asking for info or to verify your soldiers info, hang up and report it immediately.
