    Default airport question..

So originally I was going to drive out to PDX with my boyfriend.... but.. things did NOT work out the way and now I'm flying there. Originally I was going to go by myself, but my mother is being a mother and worrying about everything and wants to fly with me, go over there for four days and make sure everything is okay- which I could do perfectly fine on my own, but she's a mother and she worries- so her going is more for her than it is for me.

My question is... when you check normal luggage (not carry on) do they search it and open it up in front of you or do they just take it? It has been so long since I've been on a plane and i'm sure things have changed, so i dont' remember. I plan on bringing my 2 pairs of stripper shoes to PDX as I plan on auditioning and starting dancing again within 2 weeks of arriving. The only problem is... if they open up the bag and search through it, she'll see them which will be a big problem because she has no clue I dance.

    input?

They may open the bags in the back if they find anything suspicious in the normal scan. The only luggage they open in front of everybody is your carry-on.

I've had them open it up in front of me (Rhode Island, New York, and a flight from Florida did it.) Most of the time though, they don't open all my things in front of me. I think it depends on the airport and if they feel like being assholes that day. I fly pretty much every week, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the system.

I wouldent really worry about it, they probably wont open it. And even if they do like pan dah said just shrug it off "what? those are the best shoes to go out in.."

I'm not a huge air traveler, but I might fly a dozen or more times a year. I've never had a checked bag opened in front of me.

I fly about 1-5x a month, sometimes on a one-way where I'm a huge security risk and they get particular as yr going thru security, but that's the only time they've opened my carry-on, usually they don't. And the clerks that take yr bags to check I think are just clerks, they leave the searching to other 'authorized personnel' after you leave the counter but b4 they put it on the airplane...

Carry on is searched in front of you, but the checked luggage is given to a clerk, and you don't see it get searched. I am pissed though-they searched my luggage last time I flew, and POOF my cell phone charger and a few pairs of underwear were gone from my bag when i opened at home... but there was a NIIIIIICE note from the TSA saying "we decided to search your bag, nothing you could do, toodles!"

    LOL

Do you already have living arrangements lined up, or are you staying in a hotel the first few nights?

Ah well, let us know when you get here, and where you audition!

needtodance-- I'm staying in a hotel the first couple nights and then moving into my dorm.

and so far... i'm planning on auditioning at dolphin II, mary's, club 205, acropolis and stars cabaret. I figure one out of five will like me... hopefully

Normally that is true, but certain airports make you take all your luggage to the TSA screeners by yourself. In LA they always check me in and then I have to take my bags to the TSA people on my own, even if I use Skycap service. Nashville, Hartford, Providence, LA, and a few other places make you take them by yourself, and sometimes they go ahead and open them while you are standing there.

I know in Providence I wasn't allowed to get in line for security until I watched the TSA screener open my checked baggage in front of me. He was rather embarrassed when he found tons of porn, magazines, stripper shoes, dildos, and other fun things. Now I just go ahead and tell them what's in the bag, so there are no suprises when they open my bag in front of somebody's grandma. I won't even start on all the BS I have dealt with from the people that screen my carry on luggage.

Hmm i've only had my luggage opened once and it was in Winnipeg... I got to Edmonton and my vibrator was gone

I fly weekly and only once has my luggage been opened... chances are your fine. Im thinking the reason Ginger and I get eyed more carefully is because they see that we fly so often lol or they've seen us at the clubs and want to perv us

LOL ginger-thats hilarious! Sounds like you know better than I though, so yay for better information!

OOOOOOOOH let me know if mary's takes you, Avery-seems like everyone like sworking there but I thought they didn't do under 21... if they ARE doing minors, I may head up myself!

It must be so exciting for you, getting ready... Here's hoping the dorm works out well! I hated them, but I know everyone has their own experience and my sister LOVED hers...

Glad to know that I'm not the only one with an over-protective mother, hehe!

I've had someone open the bag I was checking infront of me (this was years ago) and run over it with a scanner thing to check for bombs. Since then, they haven't opened it in front of me. I'd suggest burying your "private" things at the bottom of the suitcase. It's not like they're going to go sorting through people's panties everytime someone wants to board a plane.

(Worst case senario: If they're about to search your bag, ask them to do it in the back. Make up some excuse to your mom later... like you didn't want her to see your grown-up toys.)

Depending on the airport, your checked baggage (ie. what you don't carry on board with you) will be x-rayed in the back after you've checked in, or you'd take it to an x-ray there in the terminal before you check it in. If stripper shoes are the "worst" thing you have in your checked baggage (no porn or sex toys) I think you should be alright.

It's random, but they open them up sometimes. They grab you and test your bag for explosives and check your stuff and then let you go.
Edit: Crap! You meant the normal luggage. naw, they just take that.
