Default Stripper job taboo level according to state or country?

Hello, I was wondering if being a stripper seems to hold less taboo depending on what state you live in, or what country, like Portland versus New York versus Australia? Do you feel like you might feel like if someone found out about your night job, it might be less harmful to your non-stripping life...if only you lived in a certain region where it is more "acceptable?" Thanks for your input

I dont think that it is so taboo in AUstralia as it seems to be in the US (just going by what I have read on SW).

In Australia we have licensed brothels so there is a clear division between strip clubs and brothels, dancers and prostitutes in most people's minds.

In Melbourne all the clubs are no-touching and at most of the clubs it is strictly enforced. There is one chain of clubs called Kittens who allow touching but they are not located in the city.

Yeah, I don't find that stripping is taboo in Australian culture overall. Then again I've always hung out with people who don't see it as anything except what it is in a way. There are some people and some areas of life where I do keep it hush hush yet overall.. I don't worry.

I live in ME and I hear some people talk alot of trash about strippers in general. I'm talking to this lady the other day and shes telling me about her -ex-future-daughter-in law (lol) and how the whole family jokes about how shes gonna end up a stripper and how AWFUL it is for them to say that. And I really just wanted to say "I'm a stripper", but it was my bf's moms best friend. Or when my bf was talking to his friend about going to strip clubs and he said "i dont like them, they're all nasty ho's anyway." Or my bf's mother telling him not to "spend his money on those sluts" when he told her we were in a strip club.

This is also an area of maine where people hang confederate flags outside their trailers.

Oh, sure. In Portland it's about as shocking as being a bartender.

It's definitely more socially acceptable in L.A. than it would be in Memphis. My Memphis friends are horrified that I dance, but in L.A. people just find it interesting. Of course, the strip clubs in Memphis are pretty much brothels so that might account for some of it.

Yea I think it's different in Philly vs Annapolis. I live in Annapolis but work in Baltimore, but Annapolis is a stuck up town to begin with, Philly (where I used to work,) was a real city and it was more liberal. This is an interesting topic.

Very acceptable in Phoenix and Vegas. Everyone and their sister is a stripper. Toronto, not so acceptable. Detroit, not so acceptable.

Definitely not acceptable in Utah... rural Nevada, back and forth with people I know. Mostly people there just gossip about it, but don't really care either way.

it's acceptable here in tampa because there's so many clubs and dancers. however, with an oversaturated market often comes a bad reputation. so, while we don't deal with it being as "taboo" as it is in other places, we do have to deal with a lot of "stripper stigma". because tampa is generally "high contact" and known for it's extras... that's what INSTANTLY comes to many people's minds when you mention you're a dancer. you're dancing here in tampa.. so you MUST be sucking cock.

CT, it depends on the people. Connecticut is funny. You have the cities, where its perfectly acceptable and people dont bat an eye when you tell them your a dancer, but if you go down to Fairfield County (where Greenwich, Ridgefield, Darien, New Canaan..all those really rich towns are located) and you mention that you strip, people will look at you in disgust and cross the street to avoid you. I grew up in Ridgefield and when I mentioned it to an old friend, she flipped out, and when I saw her with her parents today, she whispered something to them and then crossed the street to avoid me. But when I mention that I am a stripper up in Waterbury, people just ask me which club and then mention some good stores to buy dancer gear.

Akron is so small that everyone knows you're a dancer already, cause they've seen you in the club.

Outside of Akron, I don't tell people. It is taboo. My bf's parents would probably disown him if they found out I danced. Of course, I do work with actual prostitutes on occasion, so I guess it's not that big of a stretch to think that I do that stuff too.

It would be great if we had brothels like in Australia so that there was a clear line between one thing and another.

THere are other factors to consider, but I think town size and SES have a lot to do with it. Like, when I lived in a richer area of San Diego, people would have flipped. I'm in a poorer area now and I actually told a lady (I was just fed up with lying when they ask what my job is at that moment) and she looked interested but that was all.

That and Akron has what, 12 clubs? I think at least half the girls I met there had been or were strippers. It's almost required in Akron!

Its not really taboo in Australia at all. Everyone knows what I do and Ive hardly met another Aussie who cares. The most common reaction when I tell people what I do be they 18 or 80 is "Fantastic!"

Ironic how adult entertainment is taboo to southern baptists and yet the bible belt is one of the places with the most clubs in the country.

I'm not sure if anything is really taboo here.

Hah, that is true, there are a lot of clubs. And it's a depressed economic area, so probably every girl at one time another has been behind on bills and thought, hey, I could strip.

I still feel all over the US anything of a sexual nature is not openly accepted. We live in a sexually repressed conservative hell hole, and as long as big business, the church, and politicians are in cahoots with each other, it won't change soon.

I think it's more of a personal issue as to who accepts strippers and who doesn't. A place with a more liberal, open minded population, is more tolerant of people with so called "alternative" lifestyles, than conservative southern and mid America places where abstinence and anti-abortion billboards are everywhere.

It's taboo in small town rural Wisconsin. The cities have clubs that somehow survive (grandfathered in, I believe), but a small town club in Wisconsin never stays open for long.
