Default Safety while travelling -- pickpockets, etc.

I wasn't sure what section to put this in... Anyway...

Does anyone have any info or resources about how to keep safe from being pickpocketed/robbed while travelling abroad? I'll be over there for 2 months, and for about 3 weeks of those I'll be staying by myself in a hostel. When I was there last, it was winter, so I could just keep my passport, money, & important stuff in its big pockets, but since it's summer now,I won't be able to wear my big coat, and I don't think all my important stuff can fit in my jeans pockets... But for some reason I'm purse-o-phobic, lol... I feel like a purse says to people, "Look! All my valuables are in here! Go ahead and take them from me!" Hahahaha... Does anyone else feel that way about purses?

Soooo... What's the best way to go about this?

    Thanks in advance

When my ex did the hostel thing, he bought a little pouch thing with a long necklace attached, and kept his passport and most of his money in there. He'd have walking-around money in his pockets, but the rest went in the pouch necklace underneath his shirt. He even slept with it on (because yes, people in hostels will sometimes steal from you while you sleep).

Don't carry a purse and don't carry a bunch of shit on you unless absolutely necessary. Maybe a small bag for your guidebook or something? Those pouches are good for cash and passports and so are money belts -- if you go to your local travel store or REI or whatnot you can find all kinds of crafty accessories.

My mum got me a moneybelt. You wear it under your clothes and it's perfect for a passport and cash.
