Default itchy piercing...anything I can do about it?

I got my ear cartilage pierced last week, and so far it's been fine...doesn't look infected, isn't oozing or turning funny colors or anything. But, it ITCHES like fuck. And I can't scratch it, b/c that just seems to make it worse, and then it does start hurting. Is this common? Anything I can do or put on it to make it stop itching?

Ice packs also take out the itch---helps with healing tattoos, too.

Healing wounds very often itch like mad. It's normal. You could try an antihystamine for the itch until it passes.

Like Sirona said, when the skin is healing it often itches, and the best way to clean it is salt water. But if you want to spend a little money you should buy either bactine or bacitracin. You can get it over the counter, and it only costs a few bucks. The bactine is a liquid first aid product, but it has an anaesthetic that might help with the itching. The bacitracin is similar, but it is more of a gel, similar to neosporin.
And as PhillyDJ said, don't take the piercing out until it is completely healed or you run the risk of it closing up. I have seen piercings close up in the matter of hours if they are taken out shortly after being done.
Also, I would suggest that if it does get infected, don't take it out. Most people think this is the best thing to do, but if it is infected and closes, then the only way to treat is with oral antibiotics. If it is still open, you can treat it topically.
    Hope that helps.

Broken bones itch like a fucker too...

Nice to see someone else who realizes taking a piercing out of an open draining infection just leads to a closed abcess.

Oh and uh, be careful with antibiotic ointment. It can actually clog up the piercing and interfer with the healing process.

You could mix some epsom salt into your normal sea salt water soaks, too. I forget which piercing gave me trouble, but a dash of epsom salt was really soothing. I also like heat for pain and itching... you could use hotter water than usual without hurting your piercing. If it continues to both you, consult your piercer again, and they should be able to recommend something.

There's a liquid epsom salt available at most drugstores. I've had my nipples done for about 15 years, and if they ever get a little itchy I pour some of that into a shot glass and hold it on it for a few minutes. Works like a charm. Cartilage piercings on ears can take a ridiculously long time to heal properly, too.

wow. this mental image just flashed into my head, of you holding shot glasses on your nipples while doing one of your dances.

You know you did The Penguin when you got home. Don't lie. That IS a pretty funny image, though.

Yeah after a year mine still itched and crusted up daily, so I finally took it out...too much of a pain in the ass.

better than that...B was doing it in public the next day. ha. (I may have joined in at some point too. but don't tell anyone.)

That IS a pretty funny image, though.
best part is, my roommate was playing "discoteka" while I was reading/typing that...so not only are you getting your penguin on while holding shotglasses on your nipples....but you're doing it to that song.

"Shot glasses on my nipples." That's going to be the name of my blog!
Anyway, did any of the various tips help you Picaresque?
Also, with all the piercing talk I was thinking of another thing everyone might want to do. It's probablly best to wash your piercings last when you're in the shower, or after you get out. Especially after washing your hair - dirt, shampoo, conditioner, etc., can get into the piercing and irritate it. So, a good tip is to keep whatever solution you're using to clean with and some q-tips in the bathroom with you. Then clean the pierced area last.
Just a tip from years of experience.
