Default sacked for 2 weeks and a half dead rat

i was scheduled to work wednesday at my club but rang up and told them i couldn't because my pet rat is dying.
this seems like the lamest excuse in the world, but she has a brain tumor and is losing the use of her paws and stuff. i live alone so she is basically my roomie so it has been a little upsetting to say the least.

got a call tonight and apprently i have to take 2 weeks off to 'sort out my problems'.
i work hard and i always cover shifts if we are short of girls. i don't drink or do drugs and i never get involved in anything that would be deemed extras. a pretty good worker by stripper standards, not fuck it, by any standards really.

my rat is being looked after by my mother because i thought i was working all weekend so i can't even look after her (btw brain tumors in rats are impossible to operate on and once they start showing signs they deteriorate fast) i'm really upset about that.

i don't ubderstand why i'm being punished so harshly when i've done nothing wrong. i understand the club has a business to run and i know they have a big problem with girls calling in sick or just not turning up, but this is so mean.

our city has 2 clubs, both managed by the same guy so i can't work elsewhere. other than that i would have to drive for 2.5 hours to get to another club.

so i'm stuck. and really upset. as if things weren't bad enough this happens.

i don't think there's a solution i just wanted to vent and hear others opinions.

I think I would have made up another excuse as to why I couldn't work. Think about it, that does sound like a really bs reason to call in from management's perspective. But I don't understand the whole two weeks off thing, that doesn't make sense to me. If I were you I'd just go work somewhere else for awhile (edit, sorry I didn't see where you said there were no other clubs). Maybe you can just go in and talk to them in person?

And I'm sorry if this is insensitive, but I have to ask, why not just put the rat out of its misery? It seems like that would be the best thing, from what you've just described.

Well thats really shitty I'm sorry about your rat . Maybe if you tried talking to them and told them how you made the effort to have your mom take care of the rat so you didnt have to miss any more shifts? Thats all I can think of...I mean if they cant accept that theyre assholes...but i suppose there isnt much you can do about that.

i took her to the vets and she has had a steroid injection and that really perked her up. rats do this thing called bruxing when they're happy, basically grinding their teeth and she has been doing a lot of that (probably because i have kept her with me all day and night. she is still able to eat baby food and enjoys doing so. i know wher she's misrable and she is still happy right now, the injection helped her gain some strength.

it's just all a bit sudden really, she's only2 and my last rat died when she was 4. it;s just come as a shock, a week and a half ago she was fine.

as far as working elsewhere the closest place is a 2.5 hour drive away.

I am sorry about your pet, that is really hard when they are sick or dying.

You always help out and cover shifts? Well that stops now. In our business, we have zero job security. A lot of us think that we have some because we are dependable, make money for the club, don't cause problems, etc. The truth is, the club does not give a fuck about any dancer, because you will be replaced tomorrow. Unless you are the only reason that a big time money spender comes to the club and they know that person won't come back if you're not there, you have no security at all.

Don't ever do the club favors, because when it comes down to it, they will never do you favors. My club used to call me when they were short on girls, but I never answered. If they are short on girls it's their fault for not scheduling enough, not my problem. They don't call me anymore.

I'm not saying we should be bad employees, try to screw over the club or anything, but don't let them take advantage of you. If it's not going to kill you financially, take the two weeks off, and when you come back you can stick it to them. "Oh, we're so short on girls tonight, can you come in?" "No, you didn't seem to need me when my pet was dying. Find someone else." If you really need money now, find out when they are short on girls and show up ready to work, they'll probably let you do it.

    thanks taylorlila.

also, carolina thanks for the support, you are completely right. i suppose i haven't being doing this long enough to realise that this isn't like a regular job.
i will certainly be taking your advice in the future, i'm a fool for ever thinking i would have been treated fairly.

oh geez!! been there and done that... i posted a while ago about how i had conjunctivitis in my eye and called in to tell them.. i got suspended for a week bc of it..... You know what i would do??? physically go in there, sit down with manager or whomever makes your schedule, and tell them u don't think its right, u may need a few days off to get your shit handled.. i hightly doubt they'll still stick to their two week suspension......

First...I'm so sorry about your baby. My rat lived almost 4 years too..but yes, they do go downhill fast with brain tumers and it is heartbreaking. You are amazing for doing all you can to make sure his last days are happy ones. It always made me sad when people refused to spend money on pocket pets because "he only cost me $10..why spend hundreds at the vet" So bravo for loving him and taking such good care of him.

I agree 100% with carolina. Screw them And def tell them why...if they cant give you a break the ONE time you need it...why should you EVER go out of your way for them? It obviously doesnt put you in their good graces or anything.

But look at it this way...I know it'll suck not making money...but at least now you'll be home with him. How much worse would it have been if he passed on while you were having a crappy night at work?

Oh honey I am so sorry!!!! I have 2 ratties, and I would be heartbroken if something happened to one of them... unfortunately, to the club, it's probably "just a rat." Like a mouse or some other vermin-like pet. Most people who don't own rats don't understand just how un-animal-like they are... They have just as much personality as a dog or cat!!!

My club understood when my dog died and I needed a few days off... but then again, that's a dog... most people have gone through that and know it can be pretty significant grief... but rats? again, only a small percentage has owned them.

also... the "2.5week" thing is a great way of your club telling you, "hey, we are in charge and can fuck with your money any time we want, but you're still gonna come back and make more for us." arrrgh... good luck,girl... i hope your rat is doing better, or is peaceful at least... my rats send good wishes!!!

I have never owned a rat yet I have been friends with people who have.. so I do understand that they have personalities and are great animal companions. Goodness, I'm still thinking about maybe getting one or two eventually as I don't have my own animal to care for (only assisting in the care for the cat of the household which is my flatmate's cat ultimately).

Anyway, honestly, I would have told them a white lie. As Embyr has said, alot of people do NOT understand that a rat is just as much an animal companion as a cat or dog.... yet if you had replaced the word "rat" with "dog" or "cat" ... I betcha it would have been different.

Or it might not have been as there are shitloads of owners and managers who couldn't give a flying fuck about the dancers just the money. No matter how hard you work for them they see you as replace-able.

Believe me, I learnt this hard lesson about not doing clubs any favours a loooong time ago ... I refuse to give them anything more than they want from me.

This is why I always tell girls to keep one foot out the door at all times .. have a backup plan. Hardly any club has job security or even values loyalty these-days ...even clubs that always seem to be short of girls!

Alot of owners and managers think short term not long term. In their mind, you are just another stripper and always easily replaced.

Treat the club the same way. It is just another club, and easily replaced.

Besides, if you can possibly afford to do so, this might be a great time for you to take off anyway. After my saga with Bibs, I did need time off.

Do you have any regulars who would go in, ask for you, then leave when you are not there? I'd do it for you if I were not so far away.

And, sorry about your rat. It's hard to lose an animal that is a member of the family, and people who do not have that relationship do not understand. That's their loss.

thanks so much to everyone for their kind words. it's nice to know people appreciate just how important a pet rat can be, just as important as any other animal.

utah mike that is a great idea but unfortunately i am not in contact with any of my regulars.

everyone is right though, no more favours! i am thinking about picking up some temp work the next couple of weeks through the day, it's just one more thing to worry about now though.

i'm so frustrated! i feel so helpless. i really want to fight my corner and talk to the manager and get a proper explanation about exactly why i have been suspended but i know that this will probabaly only make things worse, since i'm not going to stroke his ego or his dick!! argh!!
