Default Michigan Dancers Dependent On The Auto Industry

As we all know, right now the only thing propping up American car companies are the sales of trucks.

China has decided to invest $500,000,000.00 in a new truck plant in Tijuana, Mexico due to go online in 2009.

Mexico being part of NAFTA means no trade barriers - and with the new trucker laws they can literally pack em on a truck and drive right through the border with a slight gander at the paperwork.

Mexico also has trade agreements with central america and south america... ie they will likely be a viable alternative to US vehicles there.

What this means is a dramatic thump (as if it could get any worse!) is coming to the economies of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. You have your two year warning!

(Not to mention how communist China's ideas are going to look mighty good to Mexicans promised decent salaries and then shorted of them by the US under NAFTA.)

The full sized Toyota truck hasn't been that well received in spite of their half billion dollar Texas investment, cost overruns and good ol boy advertising...all made in an effort to match the new GM900 trucks. So I guess I'm cautiously optimistic that the Chinese attempt will be even less successful.

True ... however, with the strengthening Canadian dollar, it's very likely that Ontario auto plants will actually be the first to feel the thump.

Also, the Chinese investment in a Tijuana truck plant will only be one facet of the auto industry changes that will become reality by 2009. By then, the new Tijuana truck plant will be competing with new auto plants in Asia now being built by American auto companies ! Of course, either way, auto production plants operating in Canada and the USA won't be able to compete on an economic basis with new plants in Mexico OR Asia !

I don't know where you live but the Toyota Tundra by the looks of things around here and I live in the South, (MS Gulf coast) "good OL Boy central" they have been VERY WELL RECEIVED, all these "good ol boys" that have owned nothing but Tacoma's or whatever they were called before, or at least did at some time in there lives before the "moved up" to an F-150 or Silverado in the past few years have bought Tundra's it is not a stretch to say that they are almost just as common. I had a 96 T-100 that started every time I turned the key for over 450K miles I can not say that about any Chevy I have ever owned. I would still have it today if I hadn't totaled it in an accident a while back, Have a diesel silverado that was a good deal on E-bay now but if Toyota were to come out with a diesel I would probably buy one.

The Nissans are not exactly rare either BTW

I agree phonehome; the Tundra and Titan have been VERY well received over here too....
