    Default weird cat behavior

I have had my cat for 8 months. He is 4 years old and has always used his litter box. Once today, and once 2 days ago he peed on his food dish. The first time he peed in his water, today he peed right into his (full) food dish. He just got his teeth cleaned 4 days ago and was under anethesia. He also just lost his playmate--my sister's kitten, when she moved 3 days ago. So, he is under alot of stress.

Does anyone know why he would pee on his food? What is he trying to tell me? What do I do to keep him peeing in his litter box only?

OOOoooo...I don't know what to tell you. I wonder why he's doing this? Maybe he's still drugged from the anesthesia...or he could be upset at you because he thinks you got rid of his playmate? Yek would probably be able to tell ya.

    Is he neutered?

It may be stress, or him just protesting his unhappiness, but it is very common for cats to pee outside their litter box when they have a urinary tract infection, so if I were you, I'd take him to the vet to get checked out, just in case because a UTI in a cat can be pretty severe if not treated.

Peeing outside the litterbox is one thing, but I've NEVER heard of a cat peeing anywhere in the vicinity of his food. I'm stumped! That's really, really odd. You should definitely call the vet. And let us know what the vet says, because I'm curious! That's incredibly bizarre behavior for a cat.

Yek, I didn't even pick up on that.

DO you think it's possible his diet is lacking something, and he is peeing into his food and water to try and reabsorb some missing nutrient? Or something like that.......

I can't think of a single reason he'd be going in his food dish. I have a cat with pee problems (all clothes have to be kept off the floor, no rugs in rooms with open doors, bedroom door always needs to be shut...ugh pain in the ass), so I've been to the vet with him several times and I've read a ton about cat potty behavior. I've never heard of a cat going on food though. Call your vet for sure!

Yes, very strange. Its pretty much against all instinct to shit (or pee) where you eat. I agree that you really need to talk to a vet.

^Never thought of that one. Maybe it doesn't like the food...funny tasting food and water cuz of the teeth cleaning??? Yeah...definitely keep us updated. This is very odd.

Can he have an infection? Sometimes they have infections and they can't help it or hurt and it's their way of telling you somethingis wrong.

Peeing in your food/den is a sign of depression in any mammal (just like a filthy house is a sign of depression for people). If you haven't changed his food or anything I would just ignore it for now, because it sounds situational. If it continues for more than a week or so, a trip to the vet may be in order.

Thank you so much for all the replies! To answer some questions: Yes, he is neutered. I didn't change his brand of food recently.

I'll call the vet tomorrow and see what they say. I'll let you know if we figure out what it is.

Fuck, he did it again today twice, and both times he knocked over his water bowl as well! I've moved his food and water into the bathtub. I called the vet office, and they had no clue. I have an appointment for tomorrow so we'll see what the vet says.

Some people think you should only adopt cats in pairs so they always have a companion... cats are social creatures contrary to popular belief. It sounds like your cat is VERY stressed out since the anasthesia and because he lost his companion.

yes, I have been debating getting another cat for some time. I travel frequently on planes and I like to bring my cat--but I couldn't bring 2 on the plane. Also my lease only allows for 1 cat in my apartment. Also, I just spent $350 on his teeth cleaning--I don't want every expense to be doubled by a second cat. AHHHH...

^^^I know exactly how you feel on that one. I've been contemplating adopting another cat, myself, so that mine will have a playmate, but she is already enough of a headache...LOL!!! Double the trouble, plus expenses and having to tote the two of them around when I travel??!! Just don't think I would want to deal with that.

It sounds like a rather painful urinary tract infection that he's making SURE you know about.

Edit: Oh hey is that him in your icon? Is he ginger? That explains all of it! Ginger cats are just fucking psychopaths.
