    Default Pissed off at homophobia

Here in Portland, Oregon, it is Pride Week, and there are parades and other festivities going on downtown today. I was driving down Broadway this morning, and I noticed that there was an insidious presence in the crowd. The homophobic, pro-life "protestors." They were holding up huge pictures of the typical disgusting fetus pictures and signs with hateful things about "gays" on them. For some reason, this illicited a feeling of complete rage in me. I yelled "Fuck YOU motherfuckers" from my car but I feel helpless right now and want to do more. I want to throw freezing water balloons at them but I know it's not a good idea to provoke people so clearly out of their minds. I'm really pissed off and wish I could do more.

    I feel the same way!!!

I want to rant and rage at these closed-minded, often hypocritical people. But I've learned that the best thing to do is to live and let live, because no matter what you do or say to homophobes, especially strongly religious homophobes who "know" that they have God on their side, you will not change their minds. You most likely will just end up adding more fuel to their fire.

I believe in gay rights, ahem, *human* rights extended to all humans. As long as I know what I stand for and stand up for if need be, I believe that's what matters.

Trying to go head to head with these people is a no-win situation, though...at least in my experience. You could go take part in the parade if you feel like, while ignoring the naysayers, you know stand up for what you believe without stooping to that level.

It sort of reminds me of the guy with the bullhorn protesting the Snoop Dogg show in Dallas. He kept yelling, "Snoop Dogg's going to get it doggystyle...from the devil in hell!"

SC0101, didn't you get the memo that religion and beliefs are only valid when it works for the person.

I'm in Mass, and when the whole gay-marriage thing started, the way the religious kooks here were spewing, you would have though there was going to be a gay orgy in every single park, open area, etc.

It reminds me of my co-worker who is anti-gay, but, is a pastor of a church, yet has kids with multiple partners, cheats on his wife, curses, etc, but God says no gays......

its the convenience of doing one thing and saying another that gets to me.

Yup, most religious people use the religion to suit them. Not the other way around.

A-holes with no life. And what exactly do aborted fetuses have to do with the gay community?? Did I miss something??

Seriously...people would be MUCH less miserable if they concentrated more on their own lives and worried les about what other people are doing.

I would ask (and do) homophobic people if they are against the rights of blind people. The answer usually is "Of course not. It isn't sinful to be blind."

Then I reply with, "Why isn't it sinful to be blind?"

"Well, because blind people can't help being blind, that's why."

So with a look of mock innocence on my face I'll say, "Oh. So that thing in the bible where Jesus heals the blind man, he wasn't making a statement about how it is bad to be blind?"

"No, of course not. He just healed an illness. Being gay isn't the same as being blind." The homophobe would look at me like I was some kind of stupid at this point.

"So if there was nothing in the bible that said being gay was a sin would you decide to turn gay?" Smirking now,

    "NO! Don't be stupid."

"But I thought you said being gay was a choice. So that means being straight is also a choice, right?"

"Being straight is the only way nature intended us to be. Anything else is an abomination to God."

"So, being blind is okay, even if nature intended us to see, therefore being 'unnatural'. But being gay is a sin, because it is unnatural. So I ask this, why are some deviations from what nature intended us to be are not sinful but other deviations are not?"

At this point the homophobe will be getting pissed at me, because he can see where I'm going with this line of questioning. "It says in the bible that a man shall not lie with another man. If God says it is a sin, and a sin punishable by death, then it is a sin. I'm not one to argue with God."

"Oh. Then I suggest that you take off you pants right away to avoid eternal damnation."

    "Why?"

"Your pants are made of a blended fabric using a cotton poly blend. It clearly says in Leviticus in the same chapter forbidding homosexuality that god's children are not allowed to wear clothing made up of two different fibers at the same time. It is silly to pick and choose what god says to do and think that god cares more about one law than another. It has to be assumed that all of the laws must be followed equally or hell fire and damnation will follow, right?"

    "Now you are being ridiculous."

    "And so are you."

It is only okay to abort gay fetuses.

^ Yeah what the HELL? Why would they have huge pictures of aborted fetuses at a gay pride festival? Am I missing something?

^ That's what I was thinking?! Other than religious fanatics, there is physically no connection, heh. San Diego isn't anti-gay... but I get very angry when I see those damn pro-life trucks. Ugh! It's fine if people have different views on religion, abortion, sexuality, whatever... They just need to keep it to themselves!!

don't get me wrong, i am way on the opposite side from the christian right, but don't you think they may think the same thing regarding displays of gay pride and other gay/liberal/religious views too?

it is freedom of speech after all.
its not their activism that upsets me, its their narrow beliefs on right and wrong.

They prob do see it the same way..but it isnt. The gay community is not telling others they should be gay or they are wrong and horrible sinners for being straight.
I have no problem with people believing anything they want...pray to God, Allah, Moses or Joe Pesci for all I care. But dont tell me I'm wrong for doing something differantly. And dont try to convert me. Thats where I draw the line.

Their viewpoints are hateful. I see them on the same level as the KKK. Also their viewpoints lead to some really fucked up shit, like gay people not being able to have the same rights as straight people and gay people having to go through intense discrimination throughout their lives.

We used to have "religious" protesters come to our campus all the time, stand on the free speech lawn and yell at people for being "whoremongers", "faggots", "sodomites", "fornicators".. etc. At first I was enraged, so much that I would get up in their faces and debate with them between my classes, drawing a lot of attention- I got on the school paper and school news... stuff like that. Despite my counter-protesting (and other student's) they never went away. It encouraged them- they loved the media attention. They even went to Mons Venus and protested. I've found that with those kinds of people, it's best to just ignore them.. I mean.. imagine how awful their lives must be- living every day in fear that if they are not "perfect" in the eyes of their imagined god they're going to suffocate, rot and die in hell. So now I don't get angry, I just feel sorry for them

How long does Portland pride last? I'm going to be there Wednesday!

I think that the people who hold up pictures of fetuses are disgusting, but guess what? So are people who hold gay pride marches. These events typically are an in-your-face, we-are-gay-and-look-how-flamboyant-we-are affairs.

I am VERY open-minded about gay people. I think there is nothing wrong with being gay, I think gays should face no discrimination (with some caveats WRT adoption), etc etc.

But....why do they feel the need to prance down Main Street? I was talking with a guy I know in Ft Lauderdale about this, a gay guy who is struggling with being gay and Catholic (how's that for a conundrum). He is horribly embarassed by these public displays and says they actually HURT the gay rights cause. He told me that he thinks that people would be much more accepting of gays, but the "extreme" gay community feels the need to push it in everyone's face with these sorts of things.

    I kind of agree.

Sun Child, just remember that here in PDX, those people are totally outnumbered. Boo hoo for them-just ignore them, they can't be helped. On another note: I LOVE DARCELLE!
I wish I was a Macaque, living in a hot spring, receiving daily groomings and matings by various males. Aaaaaaaah, one can only dream....

mr hyde, i was always on the understanding gay pride parades were more of a form of fun party entertainment? its just a celebration of a sexuality.

it angers me when i deal with homophobs. i swear there are more in australia then nz!! there was just a case of two guys adopting a baby here last week, apparently some group fully opposed it, never mind these guys waited 3 years just like everyone else..

its always slightly funny tho when a guy is homophobic for the reason that he doesnt want a guy to come on to him. what? like a gay guy wants a piecfe of your skanky man ass? pfffft dont flatter yourself!

I think it's just a fun way of showing support for the community. They arent trying to convert anyone..they are just saying that in SPITE of the people against them..they are proud to be what they are.

there are all kinds of specific parades...Puerto Rican Pride, Irish Pride on St Patricks Day,Disability Pride parade...hell..even a Christmas parade is technically a Christian parade where those of other faiths have taken offense...I dont see any differance.

I find nothing offensive in someone being proud of what they are...as long as they dont say they are BETTER or put down others.

Yeah...I was more ranting than wanting to start a debate, and I didn't mean to be so political. It was like the pro-lifers and the homophobes had united forces and something visceral happened to me, a sick feeling. I do not see the gay parade as "disgusting," I have seen NYC's gay pride parade and I really think that they are really joyful celebrations of how far homosexuals have come in terms of not being persecuted and being able to be themselves.

Do Americans have to hate something?

At the beginning of the 1900s, it was Polish immigrants. Then in WWII, it was Germans and Japanese. In the 1950-1960s, it was black people. Now gay people are the big targets.
