I suppose when you get right down to it, strictly gay people will never have need of abortion services. So where the pro-lifers supporting the gay pride movement?

I'm straight and I'm glad there are homosexual men. I wish there was lots more. For every homosexual guy, that means there is one more woman out there that I could possibly get!

They also say that homophobes are just closet homosexuals that are afraid to come out of the closet.

Can't say I really think abortion is always good though. Alot of women are depressed after an abortion and wish they wouldn't have gone through with it. I think adoption is a better option.

It's a good analogy Paris, and I've used it myself, although I admit it breaks down a little in practice. Specifically you don't see too many people poking their eyes out and choosing to be blind, but you probably do see some portion of the people who experiment with being homosexual because where blind is a terrifying, a gay experience for some is still fundamentally pleasure driven.

Anyway... just saying, I liked your story, but you may well find some people reject the analogy because they fundamentally see a difference (and there is one) but they can't articulate it.

It's a very valid point, and the kind of thing that Sam Harris brings up in "The End of Faith". Moderates often have the problem that they pick and choose what to practice and take seriously, while at the same time argue that the word of God is infallible. Since these positions are often in conflict, moderates basically live with themselves by turning their logic/intellect on and off as it suits them. It's a powerful tool, to be able to pick and choose when to think clearly, and when to have faith

I am VERY open-minded about gay people. I think there is nothing wrong with being gay, I think gays should face no discrimination (with some caveats WRT adoption), etc etc.

But....why do they feel the need to prance down Main Street? I was talking with a guy I know in Ft Lauderdale about this, a gay guy who is struggling with being gay and Catholic (how's that for a conundrum). He is horribly embarassed by these public displays and says they actually HURT the gay rights cause. He told me that he thinks that people would be much more accepting of gays, but the "extreme" gay community feels the need to push it in everyone's face with these sorts of things.

    I kind of agree.
So... you're open minded about gay people as long as they are not on the street?

It's an expression of community and freedom from persecution. At this point it is also a way to bring the greater community closer to them, to show that they exist in some fair numbers and to increase participation between the hetero/homo communities. What could possibly be embarrassing about that? I'm sorry that your friend is self-loathing, but he is wrong (WRONG) about them hurting any gay rights causes.

I could see similar complaints about Caribana - "I get that you are proud to be black. But do you have to be black in public?"

No, I'm not saying that they don't have the right to "be on the street" as you put it.

I just think that they hurt themselves with overly flamboyant "look at us" displays. Just be gay and go about your business. If you want to be treated normally, act like it.

How do they hurt themselves by being overly flamboyant Mr. Hyde....

Anyway, just wanted to give you some history behind the Gay Pride march..

They are usually held in June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots. What are the stonewall riots you may ask???

The Stonewall riots were a series of violent conflicts between New York City police officers and groups of gay and transgender people that began during the early morning of June 28, 1969, and lasted several days. Also called the Stonewall Rebellion or simply Stonewall, the clash was a watershed for the worldwide gay rights movement, as gay and transgender people had never before acted together in such large numbers to forcibly resist police.....

Yes, these pesky minorities whose inclusion in recent society has been marked by persecution and retaliation, both criminal and social, wanting to express open-ness and pride in their community, and take one stupid week to be "gay in public", and invite the community at large to participate and celebrate with them. I could see how that could devastate gay rights. They're all just attention whores.

Jenny, I kind of agree. If they just went about their business as regular people, it wouldn't be such a big deal.

Yes, I read it and I don't think what happened was right, and yes, I know homo and bisexual people are "regular" people. What I meant by regular was not to flaunt it. To not bring attention to themselves. I was trying to be nice.

By "regular people", I assume you mean straight people?

I already said - you're probably right. Which would explain the overwhelming correlation between communities with strong gay pride celebrations, with backlash against gay rights. New York, Toronto, San Francisco are known for their regressive policies towards gay rights, and I'm sure it is because for 5 days of the year everyone is all "Rainbows! Yah!" I mean, why can't they just look and act like straight people and let the rest of us forget that these deviants exist? Then we'll all be happy.

Do you know what else I think is stupid? Black History Month. If they just forgot about unique cultural history and accepted the white, straight hegemony everything would be fine.

I didn't really mean straight people no. I just meant people that didn't go and flaunt their beliefs in the streets. Homo, bi or straight.

Well they should have thought of that when choosing to engage in a lifestyle that is historically persecuted, and defined by exclusion and isolation. AND THEN - going and just drawing attention to it by having parades! What are they thinking!

So what about Mardi Gras, or Thanksgiving Day Parade, St. Patricks Day parade, Labor Day, Christmas Day parade etc?

Jenny, I'm not sure what they are thinking, but their argument is that they didn't choose to be homo or bi, and I agree with them, whether I think they shold go around saying, "Look at me. I'm gay and proud!" in a parade. I do believe that there is a chemical imbalance while they are in their mother's whomb that causes them to be homo or bi. It's not their choice, in my opinion.

CK. That's different. Those are reinforcing the status quo, and making the hegemony comfortable. It's all "Look at most of us! Aren't we great!" as opposed to "Look at a small minority of us! That the rest of you used to nail to fence posts for exercise! And we're still cool! Take that!" Nobody wants to hear that. It's a drag man. Everyone would be better off if we just, you know, forgot about that. Because that is generally how positive social progress is structured. Through the compliance of the minority population, and an unwillingness to draw attention to themselves. If everyone just did that, I'm sure there'd be gay marriage in the states already.

Cinammonkisses, I honestly don't have a problem with those things you listed. I know what you are trying to say with that question, but I think it's way off base.

And I'm sure you're opinion is CRUCIAL to the practice of other people's sexuality. And you are likely a doctor or a bio-chemist, who specializes in this field, so your "opinion" is particularly potent. Thank you for establishing the genesis of homosexuality. I'm sure gays of the world are grateful. (All rejoice!)

Jenny, lol...contrary to your belief, I am not pro-homosexual...lol...I am not for homosexual marraige. I'm just saying that's why I think they are bi or homo. I have read studies where it says that a lack of testosterone in a male fetus causes the baby to be homosexual and vice versa for a female baby.
