Default i'd forgotten how good it can feel...

...to do something nice for a stranger

i was out for a walk, mostly just to get out of my apartment for a bit (and get myself a latte - and i wonder why i can't lose those last few pounds heh)...on my way home, i was just coming up to a vet clinic that's affiliated with the last one i worked at, and saw someone coming out the front door...i watched to see if there was a dog on a leash with her (i always say hi to all the dogs i see when i go for a walk)...instead she reached behind her, and brought out an empty cat carrier...the door closed behind her, and the lights over the front desk went out (it was about 15 minutes past when the clinic usually closes)...she just stood there looking bewildered for a minute, and then sad down on the steps, hugging the carrier and sobbing...

i don't usually talk to people (i've got some social anxiety issues) but i coudln't just keep walking, so i went over and asked if she was ok (stupid question of the year)...she looked up at me and just looked...broken...i handed her a pack of tissues from my pocket, and asked if there was anything i could do...she managed to get out that she'd just lost her 18 year old cat, and that her husband was away on business, and she didn't think she was in any state to drive home...

i went across the street and bought her a coffee, then just sat with her for like half an hour and let her talk about her cat, and her other pets and stuff until she was actually smiling...

i never even got her name, but i still feel like i did something good...

Awww. Thats really sweet of you. I would be so upset too if I was her. I'm sure she felt tons better after being at least listened too by you.

.... and this is the big huge reason why I decided to pay extra to have my 14 year old transitioned at home here. I was so numb emotionally afterwards (still in shock) however when I finally got to bed that night... oh boy... I was a damn mess!

I'm still grieving to this day to a certain extent.

Thank you for doing what you did for that person. I can totally empathise with her ! For me "the ear to listen" was here at SW as well as a cat forum.

it wasn't all that long ago that i lost one of my boys (he passed without medical assistance here at home), and i've been working in clinics for 15 or 16 years...i know how much it hurts, and i know how much it can mean to just have someone acknowledge that it's perfectly normal to be that upset, that you're not crazy, you're not the only one *shrugs*

i'd like to think that someone would have done the same for me...

I keep getting tempted to make an online blog asking people to make an International Thank You Day. basically a day where you purposefully try to get as many people to say thank you (out of kind deeds) as you can. Things like this perhaps. Being nice to someone feels so good to the person giving and receiving and it makes people be nice to someone else in return.

So why don't we all do something nice for someone and report it? ^-^ Maybe I really SHOULD make my international thank you day.

Because hearing things like this makes me so happy.

that was so extremely kind. most people would've said "oh that's sad" and walked away. she is going to remember that for the rest of her life, and probably turn around do something nice for someone else.

    yeah for nice people!

Good for you! I'm sure that helped her a lot in dealing with the loss of her kitty friend...

Lillith... I love het idea of the Thank You day... I try to do stuff like that anyways, just nice stuff that may help someone... When I was in culinary school, we took home SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo much food... what am I going to do with four cakes? Every weekend I'd load up my giant canvas bag with it, and go downtown to the local touristy areas that the homeless people tend to congregate and beg, and just randomly give it to them. I don't have money or anything, and they seemed to appreciate it... It was better than wasting the food, and I still feel bad that I'm not in school anymore, and can't afford to just randomly make food to give to them...

People need to think outside themeselves a lot more... Be a LOT happier...

Bless your heart. That small kindness probably meant the world to that woman. When I had to have my cat of 20 years put down at the vet, I was by myself, too. That you helped her through a very difficult moment by simply stopping to take the time to notice and care is an example we should all follow a little more closely.

I should give more of myself to helping others since help has come to me in abundance as of lately. A couple months back I was on an overnight in PA and I was at a natural food market buying a few things to take back to my room and the lady in the line in front of me at the check out was purchasing one of the most beautiful handbags I had ever seen. I made a comment on how pretty the bag was and after I finished paying for my things the lady said there was one more left and she would like to purchase it for me. I told her she was too kind but thank you anyway. She replied it was only 50 bucks and she didn't have any children to put through school. I told her I appreciated her kindness but no thank you.

Her caring and kindness alone really brightened my sprit despite the fact I wouldn't allow her to buy it for me. It's quite rare these days to experience genuine acts of kindness.

So she did it for God. And God's name is Jealous so the lady's name is Jealous?

You are an absolute sweetheart. I bet she will always remember that and tell people about it. It really does surprise me when people do such nice things for strangers. It renews the faith in humanity a bit.

heh...i'm really not a religious individual, but i guess that works...

honestly though, i think it did just as much for me as it may have done for her - i've been having all kinds of social anxiety issues lately, and for whatever reason that just made me feel better...like, i can approach a total stranger in a highly emotional state, therefore people who are not currently in hysterics are way easier to talk to...
