Default to tan or not to tan?

i've never, in my whole entire life, had a tan, real or otherwise...i'm a natural redhead, with super fair skin and freckles...i've had a few pretty awesome burns in my time, but once the redness goes down, i'm right back to white (usually with a few extra freckles)...today i was in getting my nails done, and the girl sorta looked at my legs, then my arms, and face and annouced 'damn you're white...you should go tan!' then on my way out, she handed me a slip of paper with the name and address of a tanning salon scrawled on it...

i'm really not sure how to take that...i mean, it's possible that she also works there and gets some kind of referral bonus, but it's just got me wondering if i should try tanning? i'm scared that the results will be horrible, and that they'll last far too long if they are...

i guess i want to know if there's any kind of tan that even if it is awful, won't last long? or ways to fade it in a hurry if i decide to go and hate it? or if i should just be happy with my natural paleness?

    Happy with natural paleness!!

Pale redheads are a rare breed, and very hot.

With your skintype, it doesn't sound as if a tan would take on you--you'd likely just end up with sun damage and more freckling. You might try a gradual sunless tanning lotion--Dove makes a good one--just to cut the pale a little.

DON'T DO IT! tanning is horrible for you, you skin will wrinkle earlier, and if you're a redhead, men usually don't mind pale skin. Many really like it. The chick was just being catty and going along w/ mainstream ideas of "everyone should do this to be HAWT."

I'm pale as shit, I've never tanned, and I've never cared to. The only people that have ever told me to tan were fellow dancers. But you are NOT there to impress other girls... so if custies aren't saying anything (i've actually gotten many compliments... think "china-white," not pale) then why would you care?

Love your natural skin, take care of it, and it'll love you back!!! Plus, pale people like us simply DON't tan well... or very noticeably, no matter how you slice it.

I agree...stick with the paleness. Very few people can pull it off, but most redheads look fabulous with a porcelain complexion.

No way! I would NOT tan. This is what makes natural redheads so beautiful IMO! Their creamy pale and delicate ivory complexions combined with the auburn hair is just so sexy and erotic! I couldn't see Nicole Kidman with a fake tan...she just wouldn't look as gorgeous. Forget that twit! Stay natural!

Don't do it!! You are beautiful. Tanning is addictive, I wish I never started. Wrinkles and skin cancer and age spots...ya sounds like a hoot huh. Besides as everyone said...pale redheads are rare and wonderful. Next time tell that stupid nail tech to shove it up her ass!!

I'm a pale redhead too, with the whole freckles across the nose thing. Rock it! We're one in 270.

I'm very much like you, I am extremely white, and though I can get burnt pretty good if I dont reapply SPF 50 every hour, it turns white the next day.

I know I'd look horrible with a tan, but in the summer, I feel especially self conscious, so I'll use a self tanner (Sublime natural glow for fair skin tones is wonderful) so just give a hint of color, and to help hide imperfections like cellulite (my skin also is so pale you can kinda see my veins on my arms and legs, so the tanner helps cover that too). I'm still pale, but then it's more of an off-white than ghostly...plus, no sun damage!

tannings awful for you anyway. I used to do it but now I just stick to fake tanner...a tan looks good on me, but I'm naturally a fair, fair skinned girl and I'd rather not invite cancer and wrinkles.

Yep, what very other girl said here. Love your skin! I really wish I had never started tanning, and I don't do it nearly as often as I used to, but the damage is done, there is no changing that.

I think a red head with fair skin is such a beautiful thing!

Have you seen the Dove magazine ad where a redhead uses the self tanning lotion and gets a golden glow? She looks awful in the After picture. Just because tan is in doesn't mean it looks good on everyone.

Woo-hoo! I am also a redhead with very creamy skin. I have a couple of regulars that only come in to see me and my ivory complexion. Plus, they always compliment how soft my skin is, not like the girls who go tanning and dry their skn out!
With all the stupid things guys will say, stay cool.
