    Default Calories Burned

How many calories should one be looking to burn in 40 min cardio session? That's what I've done the last couple of days, but tonight I managed to do an hour ...because I'm new to this whole workout thing, I'm not sure what my goal on calories burned each session should be? Thanks for any input...

It depends on your height, weight and your age. Also, what are you trying to achieve? You just want to loose a few lbs?

To lose a pound, you have to get rid of about 3600 calories. I have found that to accomplish this, it's best to do (depending on how fast you want to lose the weight) cardio 4-6 days a week, and aim to lose at least 300 calories per cardio session.

For your size, losing 300 calories is 40 minutes could be difficult to do, unless you are doing something very vigorous, like hard, fast running or using the stepper at a fast, continuous pace.

If you are instead using an elliptical, bike, jogging, moderately running, taking aerobics, etc, then you'll have to keep your cardio session up to about an hour.

And dont rely entirely upon the calorie coutners on machines; I have found that they overestimate by about 40 calories (so I always keep going until it reads "340"). Fitday.com is a good website with fairly accurate calorie counts for many activities, even those beyond normal exercise.

On the elliptical that I use, I usually burn 280-300 calories in a 30 minute session. That's keeping the incline at around 8-9 and the tension at 3, and the strides per minute around 190. I've noticed that each machine is different though. Another one with the same settings showed me burning slightly more. I'm 5'3" and 108lbs if that helps.

Note: I know someone will have something to say about that, so I'll go ahead and make it clear that *at least that's what it says on the machine after I enter my weight and age*

^^^Thank you both...I actually signed up on the Fitday.com site, it will def. help me to keep track!!! I'm scared of the Elliptical machine...I tried to get on that thing and let's just say I didn't last to long!!! LOL...It was kicking my ass!!! maybe I should try it again, cause I thought I was doing great with the whole walking thing...but it doesn't seem to be burning as many calories as I'd like

Yeah the elliptical is kinda tough, but that's why I like it so much Just start out slowly and for shorter periods of time and increase speed & time when your lungs don't feel like they're forcing their way out your throat lol. Also, the "just 2 more minutes" thing really does work. If you can force yourself to stay on for x amount of time or x amount of calories, once you're done you'll feel really good
