there could be dust/dirt in there. it might need to be cleaned out.
Need more info.
What's the noise? Sound like a fan only louder, or is it screeching?
If the fan is just louder than you remember, get a can of dust air and just blow it out.
It's not dirty or screeching, the fan just sounds loud. I can hear it in the next room.
Sometimes a fan may get louder if it's about to go out. If it makes you feel any better, a power supply (which has the main fan in it) is inexpensive and easy to install. As long as it works, it should be fine, but you should check periodically to make sure it's cooling sufficiently.
We just had to buy my boyfriend's computer this high end water block colling system thingy cause his fan wasn't cooling proplerly.
His computer sounded like a jet about to take off. His computer was not cooling proplerly and really overheating, which can kill your hard drive..
So I would suggest you download and run a temperature diagnostic to see if your colling properly, cause if not, you really need to fix it.
It really might be dirty tho, so the first step I would take is to blow it with spray air. Can't hurt.
Also fyi, there are often multiple fans that be the cause of noise including:
The fan(s) in the powersupply.
The fan on the CPU heatsink.
Many graphics cards have fans on their heat-sinks.
Sometimes the motherboard will have a small fan to cool the chipset.
Some cases have additional fans to move air in or out of the case.
You really are going to have to open it up and listen carefully to figure out which fan is making the noise. Like some have said you may be able to fix it with some air, but maybe not. Fans have bearings, and eventually the bearings can go bad or the oil/grease used to lubricate them leaks out. Depending on which fan it is, they can be easy to replace, to a difficult enough you may want to pay someone else to do it.

When the computer gets hotter, the fan spins more getting louder. Like everyone said, If it's an old machine, clean the dust out and see if that helps (vacuum cleaner, wet napkin, can of air,). If it's new it just may be a cheap fan, and if your feeling adventurous buy a new one. I would guess the cpu fan is the loud one. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...c.asp?CatId=99
Read a 1 or 2 page tutorial, buy some thermal paste an an appropriate fan. Spend $12-$50.
http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php . Program to monitor temps and you can control fan speed also (if you reduce the fan speed manually, make sure things aren't getting too hot).
