    My neighbor plays the harmonica.

We have no AC so we leave our windows open and catch a nice cross-breeze. My main window is very close to a neighbor's window and he also leaves his window open, so we hear him whenever he practices the harmonica. Usually he plays in the late evening and it's so pleasant to hear the music drifting in.

This morning he has a lively blues album on, and he's playing along with his harmonica. I get live entertainment with my morning coffee today!

Anyone else like to listen to the sounds outside? What do you hear?

I used to love the outdoor sounds that would waft thru my apt on the summer breeze. Then I moved into this hellhole and all we hear is people yelling in various languages, police cars, the ghetto bird etc.

It helps to be in an old apartment or house that was built before air conditioning became commonplace. Architects used to design homes to be comfortable in the natural climate. Our apartment is built with windows on three sides, so we get a nice cross-breeze, and there is a wide roof surrounded by trees so we get plenty of shade. We have ceiling fans to keep the breeze going, and relatively high ceilings so the heat moves well above us. It's generally pretty comfortable in here. In the late afternoon we turn on a box fan and some nights we sleep with a little fan by the bed, but we're pretty comfortable. I hate air conditioning and I like it much better this way.

LOL, speaking of the sounds that float in on the summer breeze... I was just hanging out when a cheerful male voice from outside exclaimed, "DIARRHEA!" No context, no other voices. All righty then.

I wish I could open up my windows, I love fresh air! But this house was not designed to withstand the nasty AZ heat....but even through the closed doors and closed windows with the shades pulled down, I can hear my neighbors kids screaming and pitching fits every ten minutes.

This is Styx guy or different guy? Cause I'm trying to imagine "Come Sail Away" on harmonica.

I can't think of any particuarly interesting sounds where I live now but when I lived with my parents my best friend lived across the street and her dad played the flute. We could always hear him in the front of his house playing the flute.

I always try to have music on in my apartment, otherwise I hear one neighbor (who is always drunk) singing loudly to god only knows what. My other neighbor sits on our adjoining balcony and blares his music. Once it dies down for the night, all I hear is loud sirens from the ambulances passing by. (I live next to a hospital)

The list goes on and on. I sometimes think that I am the only person in the neighborhood who is not a drunk or horribly obnoxious.

    I realllyyy miss country living.

I wish we could open the windows...although it has been very comfortable here at night....Come to think of it, I'm gonna open the windows now.

Will report back with what I hear

I've got one bird feeder that I fill every morning, and I spread a little extra on the ground. So, every morning I hear birds also. They wake me up, but I like it, so its OK.

Now, nightime's a different story. Either I hear my white trash neighbor (who thinks the same of me, and we're both probably right) in her back yard, or the kids in the place behind me playing and screaming in their back yard.

We have lots of birds, too. I love the country. I also occasionally hear tractors and lawn mowers, and in deer season, gunshots in the distance. The neighbors hunting dogs sometimes howl, but not too much. Squirrels chatter and woodpeckers drill. And of course the big trucks on the state road, but they don't' bother me unless I am attempting to have a conversation on my front porch.

When a cop or an ambulance goes tearing down the road, it is a big event that makes me run to the window to see what is going on. That is a HUGE difference from my last house, which was between 2 fire departments and a few blocks away from Kedzie street, which leads to the closest ER, and Pulaski St, which leads to the second closest. In my old houle, I also heard neighbors fighting, garbae trucks, cats in heat, and all the other lovely city sounds.

When I was a kid, the neighbor across the street played the organ, and the church down the block played the prettiest recorded bell songs. Summer sundays were just amazing back then.

Send that harmonica player up here the next time we are trying to break the record for the world's largest harmonica band!

This video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AmUP46p2a4 is from last May. Only about 1200 turned out, so the record of 1800 was not broken. Maybe next year.

Nothing real fun around here. Sometimes some loud radio or tv, but nothing I can make out enough to enjoy (if I'm not sleeping during, that is)....

We live in an unincorporated area...so the sounds we hear the most are lawn mowers and places being upgraded, etc. Of course, there is this new family who just got a dog and this dog doesn't shut up at all during the day. He's outside all day long and barks at anything and everything.

We have our windows open all the time. Our house is new, but built with a great cross breeze and I hate A/C, as well. Yesterday was the first time I turned on the A/C because it was really hot, but also really humid. Since it's cooler today, the A/C will get turned off and the windows and doors will be opened again. Yay to fresh air!!

We have a church a couple blocks away that plays pretty bells on Sunday mornings too. I like waking up to that. On Easter those bells ring at sunrise and I love to hear that. I'm not a Christian but I still like church bells.

We have a lot of birds too (at least for an urban area) but I miss the birds in Australia. I loved waking up to hear the magpies shriek and warble. We also had a flock of over 200 cockatoos who nested in a stand of trees across the street; they'd be gone all day, but every evening around five or six they'd all come back and there would be about fifteen minutes of deafening noise while they all checked in with each other before going to sleep. My ex hated those cockatoos. I loved them. We had kookaburras in the neighborhood too. *happy sigh*

I cant have the windows open often...I hate AC too, but in my house its a must. I open all the sliding doors whenever theres a decent breeze to get fresh air in.
But i have really loud obnoxious neighbors too...so open windows all night isnt an option. There are the kids behind me who cant speak..they only know how to scream. Even if they are an inch away from each other. Theres my pothead neighbor across the street who blasts really BAD island music when he's stoned...you can hear it for blocks. There are the ghetto wannabees with their souped up ricers and bass that shakes the walls.

And this is the NICE neighborhood!

My dream is to someday have a home with acrage on the ocean so I can open all the windows and fall asleep to waves crashing outside. Sigh....
