    Tanning Q's

I've never been to a tanning bed before, as I am a very easy burner and I don't want that leathery tan look. However, I am STILL wearing a tan line from a bad sunburn I got over two years ago - yes, I said years. There's a visible line across the back of my waist, and another line with a clump in the middle halfway up my back (from my bikini string and the tie in the middle). Sunless tanner can only do so much.

So if I go to a tanning bed, will that even it all out? How long should I stay in there? I don't want a deep tan, I just want it to look even. And like I said, I sunburn really easily. How much would it cost and how do I do it?

Here in Michigan they have tanning beds that they call "turbo" beds. These beds are about $15-$18 a session, however they block out 99.% of the UV rays that are harmful and cause the skin to burn.

It is unlike the "coffin" types of beds and more like a double bed, whereas you only tan one side at a time (for 12 min.) It massages you while you tan and most have built in air and radio.

I know it is expensive, but not only do you NOT burn, but within a few hours after you have a better than base tan. (I would say equal to tanning regularly for 2 weeks worth of color). I asked the attendant about the burn ratio and she said that less than 1% burn.

I don't think it would even out.....I tried something like that once, and it was a disaster.....my lines were all still there (just darker, but so was everything else) and on top of that, I managed to burn my shoulders, boobs and bum in the process.....no good.....all I would suggest is keep going the sunless tanner route....maybe go get a good salt scrub to accelerate loss of all that old skin? And then whatever you can still see, cover it with a bit of bronzer.....shimmery stuff's pretty good at camoflauging uneven-ness. Good luck!

The thing is, I can't reach it very well. It's exactly in the middle of my back!

Helpful friend? If you are pale, I would say start off with FIVE minutes.. I know that sounds like a lot of effort for not much, but it will save your skin. LOTION.. Sensitive skin? Do a patch test and for goodness sakes don't use one that has a tingle. It will run you out of there screaming.. Bombshell is a good starter lotion.

Also, I would recommend a turn in the middle of your session.. that will keep you even. You can tell the chicks that tan a lot, they have ( what I call ) the bootie lines and the pressure points. One white spot because they are to lazy to turn over. They scream tanning booth in the black light of the club. Also a lot of salons have package deals, you pay so much and can go for so many sessions. If your planning to keep even a little color, I highly recommend this. Economical.

I always put my lotion on BEFORE I go to the salon..

Good site for brand name lotions.. cheap. Personally I prefer the designer skin
    brand.

Some places let you use your own CD's to, to listen to while you tan
    Enjoy!

^ ^ DINg ding ding! Winner! Go for several sessions, very little time, gradually increasing your time each visit or every couple of visits. It will take a while bu you can even it out without damaging your skin TOO much.

Yes, lotion, not the tingly kind though, you will burn with those!

5 minutes to start, and then up to 7 then 10....but watch your skin, pay attention to it, if you feel hot or feel like your "cooking" in the bed then stop early. and Crow is very right, flip over, or lay on one side then the other. I move all over the place when I tan, start on my back, then do my right side with my legs sort of scissord then my left side, and then if I have any time left over I do my tummy, but then again, I tan for 15 minutes usually.

    Hope that helps ya!

Raise your knees, or lay sort of twisted on the bed. On your back but twisted to one side with your legs bent. that removes the crease at the bottom of your rear end.

You use lotion in the tanning bed? Like a special kind? How much is it and where do you buy it?

They usually sell them at the slaons. You can buy lil mini "trial" packets or an entire bottle. They're all different depending on the brand. You don't HAVE ot use lotion, but for what you want to do, and if you are pale, you should use it. It jsut helps your skin recover and feel better.

You put it on before you tan, either at home or when you get to the salon before you jump in the bed.

I feel like such a tanning nut....

I don't know about L.A. but in az it pretty reasonable. I pay about 7 bucks for the tan itself in a regular bed, plus about 12 bucks for the packet of lotion. One packet can usually last me for two tan sessions though.

Plus, if you sit on the edge of the tanning bed the last few minutes of your session, those butt crack lines will go away .. Tanning lotions, help accelerate your tan plus save your skin. I HIGHLY recommend using one.. Also in my previous post I spoke of Bombshell. Good starter lotion with NO tingle..

Yek..if your like me...I'm VERY pale, burn very, very easily, have light eyes, light hair...

I burn at 5 minutes to start. I have to start at 3 minuters, then go to 5, then 7, then 8, then 10. Yeah...it sound slike a pain in the ass, but it's way better than the burn.
But then I gave up tanning completly, I havent done it in years, just I'm at such a high risk for skin cancer.

And yes, use a lotion. They sell them in the tanning salon, and they are not cheap. Of course, the more expensive, the better.

I would recommend a high pressure tanning bed, apparantly burning is far less likely in these beds and fair skin types can get a tan in them. I rarely burn but I like the high pressure tanning bed because I only have to tan once or twice weekly to maintain my color.

I got a great deal and pay 50 bucks monthly flat rate at Gold's Gym here, I can tan and work out as much as like for that 50 bucks. Typically, just getting in a high pressure bed will run 10 to 15 bucks. Even in the high pressure bed they shouldn't start you out at more than 5 minutes and if you start feeling burning any place on your body get out immediately. Also, make sure any medications you might take doesn't interfere with tanning. Some meds can cause photosensitivity.

You could try putting sunscreen everywhere but your white area... I don't know how feasible that is though.

I'm not trying to poo-poo the tanning bed route or anything, it must work well for some people, or they'd go out of business......but: I'm albinin.....I have some pigment in my skin, eyes, hair.....but not much....so I burn baby burn if I get sunshine or tanning booth exposure....so seeing as skin cancer is such a high risk for me (not just because of the whitey-ness, but it runs in my family) I hide from the sun.....hell, I wear sunscreen in clubs (not the same kinda UV as the sun, but it's there)......so as far as actual tanning goes, I'm pretty clueless.....sounds like these other ladies know what they're talking about though!

I am Irish and burn like crazy. I started out at 4 minutes twice a week for about a month, then a month at 6 minutes...now i'm at 10 minutes(the max in this bed). And thats the stand up high intensity bed using an indoor tanning lotion with bronzer. It took 3 months to get enough of a base that I wont burn(and I dont really tan my face...I cover it with a towel and even it out with bronzer).
And as you saw even at THAT,I'm not particulary tan. I'm really tan for ME....I'd otherwise be translucent and sickly lookng... but it isnt as if anyone will ever mistake me for a Latina!LOL!

When you go in...if you feel too hot, or your skin feels like you are burning...get out. Note how long you were in and aim for adding another minute or two every 2-3 weeks.

I dont know about salon prices out there...but I pay $35 a month for unlimited use.

Mystic Tan is where you stand in a booth and it sprays a color on you, some color you right away, some take time to develope, there are a few threads on this subject here I think....

It's certainly a much healthier way to go. Like sunless tanner you would apply at home, but better. That might be the best option for someone with your skin tone and sensetivity. Look up the threads, there's lots to learn about Mystic Tan
