    Default How to control snacking?

    Help!

Snackign is my biggest problem, and I cannot seem t stop. I even tried to learn how to knit to busy my hands so I won't snack. I'm not hungry...I just snack, all the time. I get craving for things, that MUST be satisfied. Like...I crave creaminess, so I make mashed potatoes, but that didn't satisfy it, so I eat ice cream. Then I need to balance the creaminess with a crunch, so I have some crackers. It's not craving for salt, or sugar, its cravign for textures...How odd....

But I can't stop, and its wrecking any weight loss efforts. What to do?

    Keep healthy snack around you.

    Try:
    Veggies and dip
    cheese strings
    fav fruit
    toast with natural peanut butter
    cottage cheese
    crispy minis
    popcorn

You could also try drinking hot stuff or eating soup.

You could try brushing your teeth when you start getting cravings. I never want to eat after I brush my teeth because toothpaste makes everything taste like butt.

I have a huge problem with snacking as well as going on all out binges when I'm craving a certain thing and nothing seems to satisfy it. I'm also totally picky about textures which drives my bf up a wall. I can't eat hummus because its too gritty and I love smooth, thick foods (which are usually totally fattening) or crunchy stuff like peanuts or crackers way more than I crave flavors. My weight started creeping up on me majorly in the spring because of all this mindless snacking coupled with a doubt of depression.

The only thing that worked was to banish snack foods or anything else easily prepared from my house. Not only do I snack like a mofo but I'm extremely lazy so this worked. I'd sip some water, laugh at some stupid humor site, or go do laps around South Coast Plaza (the local uber-mall) without actually buying anything. I try to only keep some milk, fresh chicken breasts, vegtables and fruit in the fridge.

Another kinda nutso sounding tip that worked--eat naked. I hate my thighs and if I looked at them while I was eating I'd usually stop pronto.

I'm ALWAYS naked in my house.
If it be eating, cooking, or sitting here typing this..I'm naked. LOL.

I don't keep snack foods in the house. I have rice cakes. That's it. I don't snack on snack foods, I snack on real, dinner foods. I'm a grazer, I guess you'd call it.

I'm gonna try to just eat every 3 hours, and figure out exactly what it is I'm gonna eat, and stick to the plan.

I'm still trying to figure out how to stick to that plan. If you figure it out let me know how . I'm hypoglycemic and need to eat pretty regularly. I have trouble keeping meals small and consistent throughout the day. I'm pretty retarded when it comes to planning healthy balanced meals, so I just eat whatever in very small quantities. Totally unhealthy, I know. I wish I had my own nutritionist who could help me plan things out. Usually when I graze its all fruits and sometimes carrots or broccoli.

I'm wondering if anyone has found a diet thats good for consistent grazing throughout the day. I seriously need to be told what to eat and when for me to diet. I'm small so 1200 calories is about as much as I can eat a day and not gain weight.

^^ You need to eat more than that, or you're going to get famished and snack on everything in sight. I know you don't eat meat, but do you eat eggs? I don't know what kind of stuff you like, but here's an idea of what to add so you don't get so hungry:

    Breakfast: Oatmeal and scrambled eggs
Snack: Apple with peanut butter or protein shake
Lunch: Cup of soup with large salad with oil and vinegar
    Snack: Fruit and string cheese
Dinner: Whole wheat spaghetti with marinara, salad or steamed veggies
Snack: Yogurt with almonds, or string cheese w/fruit

You need to have some sort of protein with every snack and meal (dairy counts), and I personally *have* to have carbs or I get sickly. Snacking is ok as long as you do it with healthy stuff. It's also helpful to plan out your meals so there isn't the option to go "what am i gonna eat?" and end up getting something unhealthy.

I think if you feel hungry (after you've already had something to eat)
you should have 4 ozs. of water sometimes you think that your hungry when your really just thirsty. Also those breakfast oatmeals can have a lot of sugar in them, go for the organic kind and add stevia and cinnamon. I think it's important for you to do this at your own pace, as long as your making progress. When most people cut out junk foods completely from their diet, it ends up being another crash diet. Moderation, if you can't handle a cheat day only have a small tiny portion of the food that you are craving. If i have a small portion of junk food, I will eat something healthy & filling right after so I won't have room for any more junk food.

i used to be really notorious for boredom eating...i've taken to constantly having a glass of water with a straw (i don't like squishy foods - i like stuff that needs chewing, and i can chew on the end of the straw...i'm also a little bit orally fixated and always have to have something in my mouth, so the straw also fills that need)

when i get cravings but i know i'm not really hungry, i sort of negotiate with myself - ok fine, you can have the chips, but not until you've [had another litre of water/done all the dishes/cleaned the bathroom/other unpleasant task] - that way, i REALLY have to want my snack to put myself through 'earning' it...i also don't keep much in the house, so if i want something, i have to go out and get it, and i don't drive, so i get a bit of excercise just going to the store...

it's gotten easier as i've started to see some results as well...

I snack a fair bit myself, but I choose fruit, vegies and hot drinks mostly. Snacking isn't bad- in fact, it stimulates your metabolism- but you do need to watch what and how much you eat.

Maybe you're not getting enough protein and iron so your body's appetite is forcing you to keep looking for it. Try eating more beans, soy products, broth based soups, unsalted nuts, etc.. those all fill you up without weighing you down.

Wow, Gretchen you might ought to have your blood checked. 1200 calories isn't nothing. I am 5'3" and 108 lbs., I eat 1400 calories a day to maintain, if I cut back to 1200 I'd lose quick.

My new favorite snack is soy nuts. 1/4 a cup counts as one serving and has 130 calories and I think 12g of protein.

If I really crave a snack sometimes I'll first do a workout that burns up an equal amount of calories in order to 'earn' it...

The best thing to do, Kaylinn, is too just simply keep healthy snacks around the house and get rid of all the junkfood all together, if you have any.

Keep a big bowl of your favorite fruits on the counter that you can grab when the urge hits. Keep fruit, veggies, and yogurt in the fridge...Just buy healthy snacks in general when you go grocery shopping.

Also..there are some pretty good and healthy replacement meal/drinks out there now. I bought some from CVS and they were pretty tasty snacks.

Also....my #1...DRINK A TALL GLASS OF COLD WATER FIRST!!! If you're still in a snacking mood after that...grab the fruit, veggies, or yogurt, etc.

    Repeat as necessary.
