Default 'help wanted index' at a 49 year low !

this was buried at the end of another financial story at

(snip)" Meanwhile, May's help-wanted ad index fell to a 49-year low, the Conference Board reported Thursday.
The index fell to 27 from 29, the lowest since August 1958. The index was at 33 a year ago. "The labor market is slow and might even slow a little further this summer," said Ken Goldstein, an economist for the Conference Board, a private research organization. Payroll growth could slow to about 100,000 per month from 120,000, Goldstein said. Job-opening advertisements fell in six of the nine regions over the past three months. "(snip)

I wonder what three regions didn't have a decline in job openings.
A 49 year low is dismal to say the least.

But it didn't measure craigslist.org or hotjobs.com, or monster.com, all of which have taken a serious bite out of major newspaper help wanted ads in North America in the last several years, so it can't really be taken seriously, can it?

The sky is falling, the sky is falling...not.

It has been established lately on CNN, CNBC, and other places that many of those ads are FAKE - placed there to prove no citizens are "qualified" for the job so they can hire a cheap H1-B or other visa holder.

^^^ and for whatever fraction of job listings at monster.com etc ARE legitimate, because the cost of listing such ads is significant for the potential employer, they typically pay the shot only to list jobs where high skill levels are required and where a potential employer seeks to 'import' a new employee into the area.

The vast majority of low / medium skill level jobs are still listed in newspapers, as are ads for high skill level jobs when the employer actually wishes to hire someone already residing in the local area.
