Default 60% of all products recalled this year manufactured in China

This was the number pruvided by one of our local news broadcast channels.

The products mentioned were contaiminated toothpaste, toy trains with lead-containing paint, etc.

This is also a "stealth" form of taxation on average people in the U.S., but one which should enventually have some interesting consequences in the U.S. legal system. Although primarily for the U.S. corporations which either import the Chinese products or have offshored the manufacture of products to China.

^^^ actually the stealth 'tax' is embedded in the higher prices which must be charged by remaining US product makers, who have deep pockets, who have hard assets within the USA, and who are 100% subject to the jurisdiction of US courts handing out million dollar settlements at the behest of eager trial lawyers.

This implies that a stealth 'savings' is embedded in the imported foreign products, because the actual manufacturer with deep pockets is beyond the jurisdiction of US courts thus doesn't have to factor in a 3-4-5% cost for insurance and legal defense. All that the US trial lawyers can attempt to get ahold of is the assets of the importer ... who typically has little or no hard assets in the USA, and who will simply go bankrupt (to be replaced by a different importer) should a hefty product liability verdict and award ever be forthcoming.
